I have like 2 or 3 glasses of diet soda a day - preservative free -
Are these bad for health? I cannot make any sense of the articles that say they are good or ones that say they are bad.

The internet gets filled with junk when it’s a hot topic. To sift the truth from the fear look for credible articles peer reviewed and backed by science.

There is nothing wrong with federally approved artificial sweeteners. On the FDA site they are referred to as GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe).6 -
Well, a certain famous someone has 12 Diet Cokes per day, so....2

Just focus on mostly healthy foods in moderation and pay attention to your body feels over time. Most of the articles you read out there are scare mongering agenda driven.0

Not the best example if you want to prove they don't cause brain damage.18 -
A few years back I reviewed the scientific literature on aspartame. Two issues were well studied, and here are my personal conclusions:
First, the claim that it caused headaches. A double blind study pretty much put that (and many other reported reactions) to rest. This doesn't mean that it couldn't give an individual some sort of reaction, but that reactions relative to placibo were rare.
Second, the issue that it is broken down into phenylalanine and methanol in the stomach, which is entirely the case. Phenylalanine is an amino acid that is common and harmless unless you have a rare allergy to it. Methanol is toxic at some dose, as are a lot of things commonly consumed. The point is that the amount of ethanol in aspartame is so small that it is not a problem. Many common foods have similar levels of it.
Now, you have to make up your own mind.6 -
Chemist here. Based on the scientific evidence and peer-reviewed journals, aspartame (the artificial sweetener usually found in diet soda) is safe. But it’s always a good idea to do the research for a topic you’re not sure on, rather than to just take someone else’s word for it.5

No problem. But if you're drinking them from a large container (liter or two-liter bottle), put them in the refrigerator after you've opened them, since you have selected preservative-free.4 -

Is there even such a thing?
I have no idea, but OP said there is. Given the number of people willing to buy products that claim to not have ingredients that they're afraid of, rationally or not, I would think there would be a market for it.

i have never seen preservative free. and i have never seen an article stating that they are good for you.
The diet coke in my country doesn't contain preservatives. Pepsi does however.0 -
Maybe. But they're delicious. And the third eyeball and seizures don't bother me all THAT much. Totally not a deal breaker. Pass me another Coke Zero and merry Christmas!5

Edit....well I googled and some.sites say it contains citric acid which is a preservative and coke have been pulled on the "no preservatives" mis-truth.
I don't suppose those sites take a position on whether people should stay away from citrus fruit, since on that reasoning it also contains a preservative?3
