Ah, Christmas Day! A delightful day to go running on roads that have been vacated by the pre-Christmas traffic, in sunlight, with crisp cold temperature so I don't drown in my own sweat!
That didn't happen this year. My sentence of "no running" has a few more days to go. We were in a Winter Weather Advisory from 5 PM Christmas Eve to 8 PM Christmas Day; it turned out not to be so awful bad. Got maybe a half inch of snow in my driveway, drifting to a maximum depth of 3 inches. Went out about 10:30 and cleared it. There was sunshine, and a noticeable WSW wind. Later I took a 2-ish mile walk, which was pleasant. Running would have been even more pleasant, sigh.
On the bright side, I saw no dogs. I guess they were all inside resting after a hard 4 weeks of barking "Jingle Bells."4 -

I agree with this. Unfortunately there ate lots of bad owners. @jessicamcb Sorry to hear you got bit.
No run for me today. I was too busy with family activities. I did get a garmin FR35 for Christmas. Now I just have to figure out how to use it.3 -

Merry Christmas, everyone! I got in another 5k this morning. The roads had been plowed and started to try to melt yesterday afternoon, but temps never got above freezing, so they stayed wet and iced up overnight. The gravel road wasn't bad, but the pavement was pretty slippery. Luckily, there was almost no traffic (one car, plus my dad on his tractor), so I was able to pick my way across the road to stay on the clearest footing. Only a couple of minor slips!
Planning another run in the morning, then starting my drive back home. Can't wait to get back and get on a normal schedule and back to my normal diet!
46.5 miles complete of my 50 mile goal. May have to stretch that run tomorrow morning a tad to finish it off...5 -

@girlinahat - I am very much in favor of dogs running off leash, where it is safe and warranted but they still need to understand basic commands and have a good recall. We take ours regularly to the dog beach and dog park just for that. We also have a very large backyard that he can run in as well. But in the neighborhood and on the trail I run, never. I would be terrified he would get hit by a car or a cyclist. Hobbes the Vizsla generally stays with me anyway when we are running and has great recall even at the beach or park. But there are owners who don't have control of their dogs or have dogs who are not socialized to people or other dogs and bring them thinking it will be great and don't understand why people get upset when their dogs or they are attacked. They think the dogs are just playing... I have seen packs of 'playing' huskies attack smaller dogs on the beach as well as a GSP running and 'playing' up the trail from the beach to the highway searching frantically for its owner who wasn't paying enough attention... I agree with @PastorVincent the dogs aren't bad, they just have bad (irresponsible) owners!
@JessicaMcB - I am so sorry about your dog bite! OUCH!! I hope it heals quickly! I too think you should make a report to your local authorities so it doesn't happen again, to you or anyone else.
Merry Christmas to everyone who celebrates! I got no running swag under my tree... but my husband got me a ton of dark chocolate... Not sure what is up with that!

Didn't make it out for a run yesterday. I took the dog out for a hike in the morning and the wind was brutal, so by the time I got back I was not going back out again. It did get sunny later at least. But I took the holiday and had pie instead.
Today I had to drop my car off for service early so went to the Y near-ish there with an indoor track. So nice on a cold day to enjoy a comfortable temp run. If only it weren't such a short track, my ankles don't like all the turning. But I felt good and got in 5 miles instead of the 3 I planned so I'm happy. It's going to be pretty cold all week so I'm sure I'll be hitting the treadmill more than the streets, but no worries as the dog will assure I get plenty of fresh air.
Edited - Just now realized all my dates in my miles spreadsheet I copy here were November instead of December. Only 26 days into the month to figure that out.

3.5 miles this morning. It was a cold 1f (I think that's -17c). That 7 degree drop between yesterday and today made a huge difference. My sweat was freezing as it dripped, and my buff froze over from the moisture in my breath. Now that I'm back inside and starting to warm up, my knees are feeling a bit achy. I'm sure that will subside quickly once I thaw out!
That puts me at 50 miles for the month. So, I met my goal with 5 days to spare.7 -
RE: Dogs off leash. Phoenix law is dogs not in a fenced yard need to be on-leash but people with ankle biters seem to think this doesn't apply to them. I was chased and actually had my ankles bit by one and the owners were laughing like OH, it's not that bad! I mean it wasn't but come on! Then I was running and these people that live near a green space had their dog off leash in the green area and she tells me I need to stop running because her dog will attack. I said *kitten* that and kept running. Ok, I thought that but I did yell out we have leash laws as I ran by. I saw her in a field a few days later and she made sure to leash her dog. She could barely control it on a leash. She should not have been out with them. I know I can't control both my dogs at once, so I walk them one at a time. And they are good dogs, just big (and black and look scary). A few weeks ago I was running through a different green area and this woman was walking a dog bigger than her. I cleared my throat, called out on your left and apparently, she did not hear me coming (she had two earbuds in) and could barely control her dog as I plodded along. People need to be more aware of the surroundings. I have made noise and call out, yet still, everyone is surprised someone else might be out!
This past week got busy and I got one workout in. I am off from my day job this week so I've plotted out my workout schedule and business schedule and WILL get everything done. LOL2 -
32 miles.

12/2 - 4.5 miles
12/6 - 1.3 mile - ran till it was too dark. Our roads aren't so great, don't want to fall on my face. Looking forward to Saturday. the weather should be perfect.
12/9 - the weather WAS perfect! I went out to run another 4 miles and ran 6.5. (It was downhill the last two miles, so after I got up that hill..... so 12.3Miles this week.
12/14 1.5 miles
12/16 4.5 miles.... 18.30 so far...
12/23 5 miles.... it was a little over 30 degrees, not much wind so a good run. But now...it's 10 degrees outside and dark when I get home, and highs in the 20's for the next week. I'd still rather run in 30 than 90 degrees though. The heat just kicks my butt.
23.30 so far this month.

"I'm not dead yet. "
But weak as a kitten. Now I'm dreading the task of starting all over again. Anybody have any good suggestions for resuming their running after being very ill? Not sure I'll be up for it until January something.3 -
@WandaVaughn - I haven't been sick in a long time but have had to come back after surgery and injury and I think it would be similar... I would say most important is to start off slow and easy, don't try to jump right back to where you were before you got sick. Chances are you will be back there though pretty quickly. Also important - get LOTS of rest and recovery. You don't want your body to get run down and get sick all over again.3

The biggest lesson for me, was to find the comfortable distance and pace, and not trying to pick up where I left off.
I've come to really enjoy the slower shorter runs. Er, any run!2 -

It was cold and drizzly and I'm sure anyone who knows me personally would think I am nuts, but I went for a short run this morning. I got a Garmin FR35 for Christmas and I really wanted to try it out. The run was surprisingly invigorating. So far I am liking the garmin. There is a bit of a learning curve going from fitbit to Garmin. I hope I have everything set up correctly. My run synched over to Strava without any apparent issues. I only need 1.8 miles to hit my goal so I am almost there.

@kgirlhart
I started with a Garmin because they are waterproof and I am an accident waiting to happen. So I can't compare it with a Fitbit, but I would get another one in a heartbeat.

12/26 10.1 miles
As of today: 2085.23 miles for 2017
December Goal: 226.06/200
Temperature not too bad, hovering around freezing. I know my January goals will change a bit since the temperatures will go even lower soon. January 1st is predicted to be 3*F/-16*C....yeah, no, I just don't think I am up for that. Anyway, I have been thinking about my monthly goal and looked at last years mileage.....I only had 48 miles for January 2017. Hopefully, I will get a few more good long runs in before it is too horrid out there.1 -

@WandaVaughn - Lately I've done poorly coming back too fast. I think the best I did was after healing up from stress fractures in my left metatarsals. I did one week of 3 days run 2 minutes, walk 2 minutes. Then a week with 3 days run 3 minutes, walk 1 minute. Then a week with 3 days of an easy 3 miles each. Then a day with 4 days of an easy 3 miles. Then I let myself run 4 miles a day, and built gradually from there. It felt like *forever* building up to distances that were like what I had been running before; but I got there, ran my second half marathon a couple months after I started the process, and ran my first full marathon 7 months after that.
I think the key is paying attention to what you can do *right now* instead of focusing on what you remember being able to do. Somehow, I find that psychologically easier when I've been totally derailed from everything than when I've "only" been too injured to run, and not so injured that it affected walking.5 -
1---swim
2---5.69
9---5.0
11---2.33
17---1.0
18---3.25
26---3.01 uh, 7 days no running? New niggle. My right knee has complained just a bit before I left out. It did not get better as I ran. I'd hoped for 5 miles and was smart enough to stop at 3. Think I'll email the PT and see if we can nip this in the bud. I'm sure it's the other IT band. Grrrr! Maybe the pool will open soon and I can start complaining about my bum shoulder.
