A bunch of cherry-picked BS designed to shock...
Perhaps do a forum search - there's been a lot of discussion on it in the past.18 -
I get my documentaries mixed up. Is this the cherry-picked nonsense mockumentary that reputable vegans want nothing to do with?13
-
It's garbage.10

Yes. Most reputable vegan sources/authorities hate it and realize that it's a completely biased hack job full of propaganda, pseudoscience and falsehoods delivered by quacks. It's utter trash.12 -
I get 'em mixed up too. Don't often see this much vitriol about a documentary so checking Netflix I see I haven't watched this one yet. Going to watch now though.2

Here's one review that I think is excellent.
https://www.vegan.com/posts/vegan-dietitian-review-what-the-health/
My own thoughts -- from someone who kind of wants the claims for a plant-based diet to be true (but is not convinced) and who is struggling with the vegan ethical claims in some ways and is extremely sympathetic to veganism:
I hated the movie and could not get through more than half of it so far. It actually angered and frustrated me. I've also listened to discussions with the makers and found them disingenuous.
Problem: the health claims are exaggerated or distorted, and obvious points on the other side are ignored. Since I would really like an honest discussion of the evidence, that I could so easily see the counter and that it was not dealt with (and I thought the excuse for not dealing with it -- the pretense that no one would talk to them in what was an obvious set up -- was really dishonest and offended my intelligence as a viewer).
I also thought Kip Anderson NOT acknowledging that he was a long-time vegan for other reasons and pretending to be really bothered by the health stuff was really insincere and transparent.9 -
The China study doesn't even say what they twisted it to try and say.
It is *kitten* designed to scare people.6 -

Personally, i thought it brought some important info into the mainstream, which i am thankful for. Those who make money off your poor health, and those who make money off of selling you crap food, certainly didn't like the message, and i think that is why there has been such a backlash against it. I highly recommend the movie!19

How do you explain the vegans who are uncomfortable with the half-truths and inaccurate information in the documentary? We're not making any money off of anyone's poor health and we aren't selling anyone anything.10 -

I avoid health-related documentaries because they always seem to be pushing an agenda and using cherry-picked (or even falsified) evidence to support their claims.
I'd rather watch nature documentaries!9 -

I have, but eating the way he describes makes me sicker than better. I think each person has to eat for their own body. What works for me doesn't work for my husband.1

No. Why would I waste any amount of time on that woo?3

I don't make any money selling anyone crap food, but I can still recognize when a "documentary" is full of crap and disregard what it says. I highly recommend you do the same4 -

What about all the people making money off of peoples' fears and misconceptions about how our food system really works? Like organic sellers, the Non-GMO project, every alternative practitioner, cancer cure quacks to name a few. They're okay because they're not Monsatan or Big Pharma or <insert bogeyman here>?12 -
Is this the one where they're like pan frying cigarettes or something and equating that with eating a steak? Laughable...
Really, you have to be pretty careful with any documentary on pretty much any subject as most aren't objective and most are pushing some agenda or another. They can be interesting, but should be taken with a grain of salt...especially when they're doing outlandish things like comparing sauteed cigarettes to eating a piece of meat...5 -

This is why these types of movies are so convincing to certain people. They make a few basic assertions that no reasonable person would disagree with, and then use that base to make the claims that have no scientific basis seem reasonable.10 -
If it's anything like the other "health" related documentaries on Netflix, I'm sure it's garbage.
Nature documentaries, ftw. Especially if they are narrated by David Attenborough.7 -
Although the documentary was a "bit" sensational, it did bring up some decent points about the abuses and the hidden dangers in our food supply, especially meat. I typically use locally sourced meats anyway as well as my produce for the most part. There are good points in the film but you have to look past the obvious vegan overtones of it.12

People who think there are hidden abuses and dangers in the food supply should really talk to some farmers sometime. Many of them on social media now, you'll learn a heck of a lot more from them than you ever will from a mockumentary.7 -
That's the nice thing about being as rural as I am since I know most of the farmers around here as well as many of the dairy and chicken house owners. Even a few cattle ranches. Some I trust, others I know way too well to even think about it. The remainder of the food I buy at stores I would hope is fit for consumption but that's a risk you take for loving bananas. lol3

Hi! So nice to see you! I have to admit David Attenborough saying tentacles makes me giggle like a school girl. Every. Single. Time.
As for What the Health, I tried watching it, but it was so OTT drama llama that I couldn't make it through more than the first 15 minutes. I have no doubt that some of the message is on point, but much of it is lost in scare tactics that are extended beyond what is currently supported by studies.
I agree with @lemurcat12 that a balanced discussion would be of much more interest.

But if you are worried about money influencing info, check into one of the Doctors featured in the film, Dr. Greger. He has no ads on his website and his youtube account is un-monitized.
