Keto Diet & Weighing In.....

Hello,
I just started my keto diet yesterday and am counting my macros. I used the keto calculator on the keto connect site to get my numbers. Now, I know these numbers all center around your current weight and activity level. So my questions to all of my fellow keto'ers out there is 1. How often do you weigh yourself? 2. How often do you change your daily macro counts based on your new current weight? Also, I am in need of some keto buddies! Thanks y'all!

Hi Heather! I am starting Keto today. I am still kind learning about the macros. I kind of get obsessed with stuff like that and then quit so I bought "The Keto Diet" book and am using the option of using the pre-planned menus as a guideline. I have been on an all out binge during the past week so I have not got enough guts to get on the scale yet. I have tried this diet thing so many times before and it seems that if the scale doesn't budge I get easily discouraged. I thought I would try and different approach and just listen to my body and my clothes for now. I have terrrible will power! I have about 30 pounds to lose. Sorry! I'm probably not helping you at all but I just wanted to say "hello"!7
-
I am doing it once a week. I find doing it daily sometimes discourages me.4
-
Today is day 1 of KETO for me!! Good luck on your journey!4
-
Good Luck to y'all too! If you are looking to make new friends, feel free to add me! Thanks!2

That is wonderful. Thanks and will add you!0 -
@HeatherCSamps17 it sounds like you are off to a good start. It is hard for me to remember a lot of details from when I started keto in 2014 because my health was crashing in a very bad way.
The good thing one can make a lot of eating mistakes in first 12 months and still make good progress.
Today Smart Fat by Steven Masley, M.D. and Jonny Bowden, PH.D. 2016 came today from Amazon and after reading the first to chapters tonight I can recommend it to all wanting to grasp the basics of Keto. The cool part it was only $12.04 to the door USA. It does have meal plans but all may not be keto.
Staying in nutritional ketosis is now automatic and requires no counting. My serious craving of 40 years started to fade fast just 15 days after I cut out food with added sugar and any form of any grain.
Best of success to all. False starts do happen but just stick with it. DO NOT just try to copy the way of eating of others because we all can be very different. In time you will find your own Way Of Eating.9 -
Thank you for the tips. I really appreciate them.1

Great information and those are some really good points. I do suffer from both of those medical conditions as well, however, I really need to jump start my weight loss again. I have lost 38 lbs (over a very long period of time) but I still need to lose another 66-76 pounds. Because of your information, I will definitely be monitoring my BP's more closely and making sure that I drink half of my body weight in H20 to try to prevent another bout with kidney stones. Thanks.0

Clarification......that is half of my body weight in ounces of H20.1

Here is an article I am reading from Dr Jason Fung's website, Intensive Dietary Management. Fung is generally keto friendly. He is a nephrologist (kidneys) and many of his patients are also dealing with diabetes and/or obesity. He has some YouTube videos too.

Please read this article to the end to understand Fung's comment to his own article--
Update: I think quite a few people misunderstood the point of this post, and think I suggest a low fat diet. No, I suggest eating a low carb, high fat diet until you are full when you eat. This is the point – if you have 2 choices:
A – Eat LCHF until full.
B – Eat LCHF until full, and then eat more butter, oil, BPC and fat bombs
You should choose option A. I would have thought that this is common sense, but apparently, many people choose option B thinking it better.5 -

Through this group, I learned the importance of salt. In sum, carbs help the body retain salt. Hence, low-carb diets allow more salt flushing. RDA minimuns are 2300mg. Many keto-ers recommend 3000-5000mg AND they use a mineral salt (himalayan, celtic sea, etc) to provide trace minerals, to ensure electrolyte balance for all the water they are drinking.
Either track "sodium" on MFP or run a MFP report on "sodium" to see where you diet falls. 1/4 teaspoon of mineral salt = ~400mg.
Me: I saw from a 30 day MFP Sodium Report that I often do not get above 700mg of sodium daily. This is probably because most of my food is homemade. I began supplementing with a 1/2tsp himalayan coarse crystals that I put into a finger bowl in the morning and make sure I use it. PLUS, I am conscientiously sprinkling fine crystal celtic sea salt on my food. I usually make the the RDA minimum and I have noticed that I have less swelling in my fingers and toes! Who would have thought? I drink ~9glasses +/- 2 water daily.

I started with weighing like once every week, same day/time. Don't kill yourself over the scale too much because some weeks your weight will fluctuate, and that can be a bit of a motivational killer. I modify my macros when I start to stall for me the time period of a stall is about 1 month in and no changes. Some important advice, don't give up. You will slip up sometimes but keto on!4

Hello everyone My name is Desiree and i am 29 and today is day one of the keto diet !3
-
@DesireeSal welcome to MFP forums and the Keto Way Of Eating. I have been at it since Oct 2014 and it has giving back my hope and health. Each morning I weigh and is all of the tracking that I do. Most days I keep my carbs just <50 grams by estimation and let my appetite manage my number and balance of my fat and protein intake. Now at age 66 I plan to eat to stay in nutritional ketosis for the rest of my life. Health and health marks are better than 20-30 years ago when I was living on high carbs.4

I have just completed my first week on keto and had an awesome 7.5 lb weight loss. Now in all honesty, I do have a lot of weight to lose plus I know that 3-5 lbs (probably more like 5 pounds) are from a water weight loss but hopefully a few of these pounds were from my fat stores. LOL! For everyone that is..... as new to Keto as I am, trudge on through the "keto flu" and persevere because it really does get better!4

Hi I just started keto today. I stayed within my macros and I'm brand new to MFP too. I am really looking for some support, to give and receive info and be a participant in these forums. I need to lose 100 pounds and I have no idea as to my current weight because it is higher than my scale will go....
I am 47, live in Florida and handicapped.
I really hope to get to know some of you and to support you on your journey too.

This is my fourth day on keto! I have been weighing every day and plan to for at least the firs month then kind of back off. I plan to check my macros once a month just to make sure I'm still eating what I should be. How are you checking your ketones? Add me if you'd like, looking for all the support and information I can get to live a healthy life!3

I weighed in every day (still do for the most part) and use an app like Libra or Happy Scale to record the trends.
I didn't constantly readjust my macro ratios. I kept them the same until after I lost the 20-some lbs, and then experimented a bit once I reached maintenance.2 -

keto is a way of eating. its not a jump start to weight loss.you will still have to eat in a deficit to lose weight with keto.keto is not sustainable for some people though. you have to ask yourself,do you plan on doing keto the rest of your life? if not then its probably not for you.
once you incorporate carbs back into your diet you will gain weight, most of it will be water and glycogen and your body will have to start burning carbs again for fuel. keto doesnt use fat stores for energy that is a myth. you lose fat in a deficit no matter how you eat. what keto does do is uses your dietary fat as fuel instead of carbs. you can only burn so much fat at a time no matter what way of eating you do..If you are doing it just to lose weight you can do that with a deficit and eat any way you like.1 -

I'd like to add another positive comment for the Smart Fat book. It's one of the most nutrition focused low carb books I've read. Heck, it's one of the most nutrition focused diet books I've read.1 -
I've been keto for a month, dropped 7 lbs the 2nd week but then started a new job and threw myself off eating things I shouldn't have too many days in a row. I weigh pretty much every day, and I've changed my macros 3 times. I started 60F/20P/20C, went down to 70F/20P/10C and then switched this morning to 70F/25P/5C. I had about 5 days of eating carbs when I started my job, newbie lunches and all that, and I felt like hell. Definitely wasn't worth it. I'm 3 days into being strict again and I'm down 3lbs.1

I started Keto yesterday! I haven't really thought about recalculating macros, but probably once a week or every other week!1

I also tried the Keto Connect Macro Calculator and the calories it is giving me for weight loss seems like way to much. Anyone out there using the Keto connect macro calculator and having positive results?0

How much are you gaining weekly eating the way it recommends?2 -
Today is my first day back to keto. I have done it in the past. But I usually go down to 20 net carbs a day and then use ketone strips to see if I've reached ketosis. Then, following the atkin's plan, when I am close to my goal weight, I start adding 5 grams to my total daily each week until I have hit a plateau.1
