Bread in the UK

I have almost cut the bread out completely out of my diet. But if I wanted to eat some and not sabotage my diet and not feel too guilty, could anyone (in the UK) recommend a brand, it has to be wholemeal and preferably granary. I was using some granary slided bread that i had in my freezer, only to find out that it's 134 calories by slice!

If you want to cut out something, cut out the guilt. Everything in moderation.24

Um. Nothing wrong with bread? No need to feel guilty about it. I love granary and for 134 calories it's a reasonably sturdy slice so toast it, couple slices bacon, poached egg, delicious.5

No nothing wrong with bread, but white bread make my stomach balloon, and my problem with bread is that i just love it. I have been known of eating a whole baguette on my own, and once i start i don't know when to stop. That's why i put it in the freezer because it does not make it so accessible. But even at 134 calories I would have 6 slices a day for example that's almost half my maximum calories intake, hence why i tried to cut it completely5 -
Hovis wheatgerm is spot on. The 400g loaf is 65kcal/slice2

I find the Tesco wholewheat pitta pockets really good, 145 calories each and quite filling too!0

I’ve been eating Kingsmill 50/50 thins lately; 100 kcal per thin, excellent for making mini sandwiches,and a nice almost buttery taste.0

I have a roll, breakfast amd lunch it's about 120-140 rather than 100x20

Dunno about UK but in Ireland we have Brennans "be good" at 60 cals a slice and hovis "nimble" at 54 cals a slice. Aldi and Lidl are also doing their own brand of these in some stores, so you could try there?

This is the one we use. It's proper bread not that over proved danish type.0 -
I can relate to the baguette binging!!!! I buy Aldi Rustic Wholemeal. It's good for sandwiches and toast and freezes fine. Proper sized slices at 86 cals each. This week I randomly bought Hovis protein bread and it was 66 cals a slice but tiny slices (kept thinking I should have triple decked my sarnies hehe) and overall, not really much more protein or fibre than normal wholemeal.0

Have a look at Aldi and Lidl. They tend to have a somewhat better choice of bread than most British supermarkets. What's available depends on where you live. At my current place Lidl has the better bread for me (though honestly, most bread in Britain is kitten). Or otherwise look if you have an artisan bakery nearby. No calorie information, but nothing beats real bread! With a crust! And actual taste!2

Thank you all for the replies, i actually shop at Aldi so I will have a better look at what they have got. Yirara, i know you can't beat real artisan crusty bread, my favourite meal is a nice fresh bread with antipasti, cold meat and cheese, some chutney and pickles!! That's where i went wrong, because i can't control myself3

If you like pumpkernickel type bread, the Mestermacher organic sunflower bread can be found at Sainsbury's and freezes brilliantly in individual slices. It's quite calorie dense but the slices are also pretty big, so I cut them in half for 71 cals. I love pumpkernickel so for me it's a real treat.2

M&S Fully Seeded Bread, 304cal' per hundred grams and is 2 slices. Well worth feeling guilty for.0

If bread makes your stomach balloon you could try gluten free bread. It's a bit pricey but I use Schar Gluten Free Wholesome Seeded Loaf or schar vitality loaf. 80 calories per slice.0

Thank you for this, I could always buy one and freeze it. Never had an allergy to white flour, but lately it seems that white bread tends to make my stomach balloon.
Thanks for all the other suggestion, ideally all the ones that are under 100 calories will do (as long as they are wholemeal), right now it's just a matter to find a balance to find food that suits me and my daily calories intake.

Lidl sell a High Protein Bread Roll, 100 g, 268cal' with 9 gm carbs and 27 gm protein. It's triangular and is very filling.0

Went to Iceland this morning and bought a loaf of Warburtons - Seeded Batch (85 calories per slice), that would do for now. I will check some of the other mentioned bread next time i go shopping to a bigger supermarket. Thank you1

My current bread from Lidl (what's available in Aldi and Lidl is different everywhere in the UK) has 104kcal per slice. That's perfect for me as I get full from bread and not so much from what I put on top of it.0

That's easy to control then. I have two slices of bread toasted for breakfast, but won't look at it again until next day's breakfast.0 -
Hovis have brought out a new enriched fibre granary that's only 67 cals from memory. I've ordered it for my next week's delivery as I've just discovered it was available. I normally go for the hovis original granary at 87 cals for a medium slice. Keeps fresh for days too.2

I like seeded bread the most, especially M&S seeded bread but a slice weighs 100grams and 152calories. It is filling and yummy, spread with Lurpak butter.0
