Jeez Whiz Take 5 days away for a mini Ski Vacation and 13 pages of posts, Skips and skims ahead with lots of mental yeas and oh no's.
1st day ( 16.2 km ) on the hill in knee high Powder fought a ski binding all day as it kept releasing prematurely = lots of face plants . Turns out it was missing a tiny lock washer on the adjuster. $0.00 repair cost from the ski shop on the hill.
2nd day ( 29.7 km ) . Still hitting raw powder in the trees and some of the hidden runs.
3rd day ( 35.9 Km ) The best day everything was working fine - no gear malfunctions - small crowds so able to get lots of laps up the chair lift.7 -
@juliet3455 as much as I tried to enjoy skiing when I lived in the North I just couldn't, but sounds like you had a great time.1

KeepRunningFatboy wrote: »@katharmonic - Thank you. And I also seen you mention Monumental. It's a great flat and fast course and is usually perfect running weather! I've done it a couple times since it's close by. If you think you want to run it, and you want that BQ - I would be willing to pace you.
@KeepRunningFatboy What a nice offer! That's so awesome, thank you. I will keep it in mind (not the BQ part) if I don't get in to the NYC marathon.
Congrats on your race @kevaasen!
@amymoreorless that sounds like a really wise decision. Live to race another day!
Good job @BruinsGal_91 on your 10k! Crazy about the "corner" cutting.
Good to see you back @ereck44. Sorry to hear about the ankle, hope you will be able to get back to more running sometime soon.
@PastorVincent just saw that video - LOL, love those dogs and their trickery.0 -

One of my club mates from the Great White North was in @HonuNui area of the world recently and represented the frozen Great White North quite well.

Now if I could count my Ski Km's as running Km's it would look like I was really kicking it.3 -

Congrats to all who had races this weekend, it looked like everyone did well and had a great time!
@juliet3455 Skiing sounds great. I don't ski. I fall down hills with sticks strapped to my feet.6 -
JessicaMcB wrote: »@Orphia as someone who trains to 100% distance I would only max my 50k training runs at three hours if I could run a 50k in three hours. I'm in the minority but I can't say I've heard much of a 3 hour cut off, its usually 20-25 mile max outs I hear of from people who don't go to 100%. Your plan sounds good!
I personally do not consider myself an elite of any kind but totally agree with @PastorVincent that you are a special sort of elite inspiring people all over the place
@JessicaMcB You're so kind.
The AMA marathoner also said to run full distance in training.PastorVincent wrote: »The thing to be careful of is where each runner is in their journey. So I would advise someone that is working towards their FIRST EVER marathon differently than someone that has a few under their belt.
Yes, I think this is true, and there is a different rule for each individual depending on their level of experience.
Ultrarunners and pro marathoners can do many marathons/ultras a year, so they are always in "marathon shape".
Then there are those who do maybe a couple a year, and lead up to each one with a 12ish week cycle, and can do anywhere from 30 km to full distance in training.
I did 34 km as my longest run in training for my first and only marathon in August 2017.MNLittleFinn wrote: »@Orphia a 3 hour limit is a cap for people who dont run that mich, its to prevent injury. Ill go out like 5-6 hours, and thats my max, but i might do it 2 days in a row. Back to backs are common in ultra training. Most runners dont go 100% like @JessicaMcB, but most arent in a position to place or set course records, we just want to survive.
For me the race is the challenge, if I've gone 100% in training my mind says why bother with the race... its actualy psychologicaly harder for me to train 100%, since it sets an expectation.... going in without trwining to 100% means theres no expectstion this time and i can run free.
Yes, I think 3 hours is a good rule for first marathons and one-per year.
As @cburke8909 says, it gives a good base without risking not being able to complete the actual event.
I'm a bit different to you, @MNLittleFinn I did 4 HMs before I ever ran a HM race. However, things get a bit different when you're talking ultras, so I definitely see your point!
I've been thinking about my planned 50 km.
A) I doubt I'll be able to afford the flights/accommodation/etc for the race in April.
B ) I've been so good at training sustainably and sensibly, I'm putting aside my thoughts of doing a 50 km on my own on my 51st birthday late February.
C) The marathon really set me back a lot speed-wise, and I think I've got plenty of time this year to make 30 km runs more of a regular thing so that any marathons or 50 km I might do won't be too hard to attempt.
I walked 7 km today after running the 30.6 km in the heat yesterday. My legs don't feel too bad. I can see improvement.
I love this thread for helping me think things through. You guys rock.
I want the 50 to be a natural progression- relentless forward progress, not an urgent deadline.
This is a cool blog.

Another 2-mile easy run...which doesn't come *quite* as easy at 4:30am as it does mid-morning, but whatever. I'm up. I did it. It's done. And it felt good after the first half mile or so. Seems like longer runs are a better bang for your wake-up buck. The grumble-per-mile ratio has to be better...although I guess that's a trend that could reverse course after a certain point. Anywho. I need more coffee. Hope everyone has a great day!

Strength day for me today, as well as wrangling the old washer & dryer away from the wall & disconnecting it. New one delivered tomorrow and then I gotta call an electrician to move an outlet and maybe swap out a plug as well.
Possibly will need to hop over to a friend's tomorrow night to wash running gear, or maybe laundromat, if the electrical is complicated.
@sarahthes when I got a new dryer they switched the power cord on the dryer not my wall. Took a few minutes. I've been lucky my washer has been working fine. I think a hose might have leaked because of the cold.0 -
oh @Orphia that IS a good blog......2

@PastorVincent - loved that video! So cute.
@elise4270 - thanks Elise- My shoes all have the top level of padding and only one has mileage over 200. Opposite of minimalist shoes.
This used to happen to me years ago, before I was a runner - if I walked >5 miles. Weird it came back after all this time. My socks are all no cotton, but now that I think about it I haven't bought new socks in a while. Yay a reason to shop for running stuff!
Rest day for me today. At least I think so unless I go crazy and go to the gym after work. But I have to run a club after school and I think that will prevent me from going.

@skippygirlsmom I'm hoping that's all we need to do for the dryer. There isn't any plug at all for the washer on that side of the room - old unit was a 2 in 1. I'm hoping that temporarily it will reach the outlet on the other side of the room (maybe 5 feet away? small room) but the cord will be a tripping hazard in the meantime.0 -
BrookeRunningMom wrote: »i m confused, do I just post a goal for how many miles I'd like to run for January on here?
yes. It's a self-managed goal - you set whatever you would like to achieve and let us know how it's going. Some on this thread have goals in the hundreds of miles/kilometres, some in the tens, some just want to be able to run continuously for a mile. Some are beginners, some are at the stage of getting sponsorship deals. All are amazing people to be around.
This thread is addictive, and busy. Miss a day and you may find three pages of posts to wade through. But there is a TON of advice to be had here, plenty of support, and no judgement.3 -

That's exactly it @BrookeRunningMom. Tell us your goal and update us on your progress along the way. See the first post of this thread for some more details on how you can use a ticker if you want, but any method is fine. Welcome to the monthly running challenge thread! It's a very friendly and helpful group, so jump right in and chat, ask questions, whine, brag, whatever!
