Skipping Breakfast

Can skipping breakfast be helpful for weight loss - provided that you do not over compensate on other meals?
I often eat breakfast just for the sake of eating breakfast, and I wonder if I could cut out that meal to lessen my calorie intake?

your body doesnt care when you eat.13

Breakfast is your first meal of the day. Eat brakfast whenever you want.2

If you dont want to eat first thing then don't. Eating breakfast doesn't do anything special apart from curb hunger like all other meals do. If you aren't hungry don't eat just for the sake of it.2
-
If you don't feel like eating first thing then skip it - it doesn't matter when we eat but the amount of calories we consume in general.1

Meal timing is irrelevant for weight loss, but very relevant for personal consistency/adherence.
Eating breakfast (or not) will have no impact on weight loss. But if eating breakfast (or not) helps you stay on track and keep your totals cals in check, then that will definitely help with weight loss.11 -
What everyone else said!
I haven't really eaten breakfast in years because I prefer to have a large dinner and some night-time snacks.5 -
Eat..dont eat! It's the totality in a 24 hour period.0

I typically just have coffee and cream in the morning and don't eat until the afternoon. I like having a bigger lunch and dinner.2

Aka Intermittent fasting you are talking about. Yup. It's great. I'm doing it on my fat loss journey and im shredding the fat easy mode. Just remember to eat enough calories when you do decide to eat, or you'll risk not eating enough.2

Just to be clear... the opposite can also be true - be sure to not eat too much or else you'll gain. Just because you're limiting your eating to a shorter timeframe doesn't mean you can't eat too much or too little during that time frame - you still have to manage your intake on IF.13 -

Absolutely it can for some people. It is very helpful for me.0 -
I think it depends on the individual, but I don't think it matters for your weight loss. Eat when you feel like eating. Personally, I'm ravenous in the morning and I have to feed myself first thing in the AM. Then I'm hungry at lunch, but I could mostly skip dinner and have something small to eat.1

Yeah good point, forget to mention that! Always track everything you eat ^^0 -
Sometimes I have breakfast because I can't wait until lunch to eat or because I did an early workout. Some days I save those calories and have a bigger lunch. You can spread your calories out however you want.0

Yep, very true... I've never been a breakfast eater and just naturally fall into an "intermittent fasting/16:8" scenario. Didn't stop me from ending up almost 100 lbs overweight! You still have to watch your intake - no matter what time you decide to start eating for the day.
Good luck!3 -
Skipping breakfast works for me. It gives me more calories for my other 2 meals and it also makes my mornings much easier. One less meal to worry about.0

I've always been a breakfast eater. I really bought into the "breakfast is the most important meal of the day" marketing back in the day.
Over the past couple of months I've been paying attention to whether I'm actually hungry in the morning. It turns out on most days I'm not.
So lately, I've been having my usual cup of coffee with a splash of milk, but not eating until I actually felt hungry. It's worked well for me and I think I'll stick to it on most days.
I suppose many would call it IF, but I'm not a fan of named diets, or in this case WOE. So I just call it eating when I'm hungry.3 -
I skip lunch and it helps0

Right .. Technically, you can only skip breakfast once ...1 -
I always skip breakfast! I prefer to eat around 1-3 (whether it be breakfast or lunch food) and then have a nice dinner around 6-8. I found that when I ate breakfast, it was much harder to eat what I wanted later in the day due to the calories. I would also snack much more often in between meals. I’m not very hungry when I wake up either. It’s definitely personal preference.2

Coffee is my breakfast. Eggs with cheese, bacon, sausage ... whatever ... is my second breakfast around noon. As others said, it does not matter what time you eat. Just keep within your calories/macros. Mmmmm now I want bacon0

Yes, I find this works for me really well. I’m in a rush in the morning and don’t really feel like breakfast anyway. I’ll have a coffee and then have lunch around 12.30 as my first food of the day. Today I didn’t get hungry until 2pm so I waited until then to eat. It’s basically a form of intermittent fasting and the idea that skipping breakfast slows metabolism is thought to be a myth.0

I don't think it matters when you eat as long as you are within your calorie allowance. I just have a mug of tea for breakfast as I'm not hungry first thing but I'll have a decent lunch/dinner and some snacks too.
Try a few things out and see what your preferred method is.0 -
I eat breakfast because I am hungry after my workout and if I don't eat my breakfast I will binge all morning on whatever junk is laying around. So breakfast keeps me on track. But on days when I know there are a lot of calories to be had (holidays, special dinners ect...) I skip breakfast to make room. Do what is best for you!0

Technically I am not sure how you get to skip breaking your fast and also to eat at the same time1 -
It's much easier for me to stick to my calories when I skip breakfast, unfortunately I'm just often too hungry to skip it. I just wait until I'm hungry to eat.0

I think it is as several have said, an individual thing.
Personally I have two meals by 8-8:30AM. But then again I am up and working by 4-4:30AM as I try to work UK hours even though living here in the US. I have a bowl of cereal and a banana around 5AM and a light breakfast at 8-8:30. I tend to have a heavier lunch and lighter dinner. Works for me bit might not for others.
I try to avoid eating after @6-7PM as I find I sleep better on a light stomach.1 -
I break my fast after noon. It's a personal preference and a way to limit calories naturally with timing.0

Because 'breaking your fast' is the origin of the word, not necessarily the definition of the word. Many people don't consider a meal breakfast unless it is eaten in the morning.2
