Juicing yes or no

Here’s what happens with a “jump start”.
1. You see a fairly big drop in scale weight at first—which is almost all water and muscle sugar.
2. You think “this is awesome” and so you continue, and maybe start exercising.
3. In short order, you stop the “jump start”.
4. You body has to replace all the water and, if you start exercising, you start restoring muscle fuel.
5. That initial “loss” comes to a dead stop, and you often gain a lot of it back. You start to get discouraged because you feel you are going backwards.
6. Best case scenario—you stuck to a decent deficit, so after 2 weeks, you have lost the same 1-3 lbs of fat you would have lost anyway if you hadn’t started off with all the goofy stuff.
It’s just not a good idea.
PS: the same thing can happen to someone who does the “right thing” but incurs a big calorie deficit at first—the initial gratification of the bigger “fake” loss at first, followed by the stop/slight gain a week or two in.23 -
I don't think the fasts are helpful but I have a slow juicer and I believe in juices added to your regular meals for health reasons. I do not juice fruit usually because of the high sugar content but green vegetable juices and others I find are helpful with insomnia and boosting immunity when sick. I cannot eat as many veggies without digestive problems that I can juice. Last year I caught some kind of virus, which was knocking everyone out for 2 weeks. Rather than take my usual over the counter medications because I had to be well in 3 days for some commitment s, I did some research and drank4 different juices for three days. I was well in 3 days. For weightloss juicing by itself is counterproductive but there may be other benefits.8

I guess it depends on why you are considering it and for how long.
It wouldn't necessarily be unhealthy if done short term. It may not feel like punishment or be unpleasant for you. It may help you reach your goal a day or two sooner.
BUT, it could be unhealthy if done for too long or in the short run if you have health issues. It could feel like punishment or be unpleasant for you. It may not help you get to your goal any faster.2 -
Thank you all for your insight. I think i will continue to eat healthy and replace my coffee with creamer and artificial sweetener with a glass of fresh juiced vegetable.6

Why not blend? I do smoothies with fruit and veggies and use vanilla yogurt or almond milk....they taste good but I keep the fiber. Juicing seems wasteful given the loss of that fiber.4

Can't hurt to give it a try and see how it works for you. You can always go back to the coffee4 -

When I have a protein shake, I usually blend in a banana. What veggies do you use? Any thoughts on what would go good with a banana and vanilla protein powder?1 -
I have never done a juice fast, but I do drink vegetable juice. It is an easy way to get some extra vitamins and minerals from food. I feel better, and I enjoy drinking it. I really think you should do what you enjoy and helps you.2

Kale or spinach work, they impact the color but not taste depending on how much ya add.1 -
Listen, it doesn't matter if it is fruits or vegetables, fiber is good. Why on earth would anyone juice (i.e. eliminate fiber) for good health? Just eat fruits and vegetables. Seriously.
If I were you, I would keep the coffee. It's better for you than juice.9 -
You can get nutrients from the juice without the fiber. Not everyone can digest that much fiber. I can't at this stage of my life and I want the extra nutrients from the vegetables. You don't know the condition of every person on Earth so the blanket statement that any juice is bad is just ridiculous.3

When I do a smoothie my favorite vegetables to add are winter squash (including spaghetti squash), which I pre-roast and keep in the refrigerator; cucumber; avocado (technically a fruit); fennel; kale or spinach. Others that I have added include green pepper (has to be with the right mix as it has a stronger flavor), zucchini (okay sub for the winter squash, raw, not cooked), and frozen cauliflower. Obviously I do not add them all at the same time.
I'm not that into bananas, so I use berries mostly as my fruit (sometimes some mango, and in the summer I use whatever combination of fresh fruit seems pleasant -- love melon of any sort). Avocado and winter squash achieve the same kind of smooth texture that a banana does.
I wouldn't find juice filling, and eat lots of veg and fruit in my normal day, so for me there's no point to a smoothie unless it serves as a meal replacement, and as such it beats juice. I suppose if one thinks they aren't getting enough vegetables without juicing it can be okay, but I also would want the fiber.0 -
I like to eat my calories.5

I have often thought of using spinich. Do you use raw leaves, frozen, or canned?0 -

Canned sounds gross actually,lol.
Fresh. I put a handful of fresh in the nutribullet with some frozen mixed berries and either vanilla yogurt (not unflavored, that's not pleasant) or vanilla almond milk. Both I usually add water to to make it liquid enough to drink. I use them as snacks, they are easy to make and tatse good. I keep them under 200 calories by not going overboard on fruit. The sweet of the berries hides any spinach flavor.0 -
You can do whatever you want but you won't lose weight unless you consume less than your current maintenance calorie level though. It is unnecessary to eat or drink a particular thing to jump start weight loss.
I personally do not find drinking my calories to be satisying at all. I seem to need the chewing sensation. I'd say just eat the fruits and vegetables normally.3 -
Some people think that juices are healthy and natural. They don't occur in nature. Juices are about the most processed food you can consume. They don't jump start anything. And they certainly don't fill you up. So much better to eat the whole vegetable or the whole fruit, instead of extracting it's juice. The most recent juice fad started with a documentary. Which like most internet documentaries, was really an infomercial in disguise. All to sell a book. The creator of that film laughed all the way to the bank.
If you cut open a lemon or a lime, and just squeeze gently, what to do you get? JUICE. Do you eat the entire lime or lemon or do you use the juice? SHAME ON YOU if you aren't eating the whole lemon in your tea or that lime in your mojito. (sarcasm).
Juices have been around for centuries and I personally had a juicer long before any of these recent documentaries came out. In other countries juice has been sold fresh for decades.
There is no way that "Juices are about the most processed food you can consume." A piece of cake, a potato chip, even TOFU or even cow's milk are more processed than a fruit juice. How many people are lined up to suck on a cow's teat to get the milk? And somebody has to milk a cow, which is just as much a process as squeezing a lemon or passing a carrot or another vegetable through a juicer.

@lucerorojo duh uh I am referring to extracted juices. Not the juice that occurs in fruits and vegetables. I don't know of any plant in the world that you can walk up to and stick a straw into it and suck out its juice. If you've been duped into believing that juices have magical weight loss or other health properties, that's your reality. Not mine.
You've never drank coconut water fresh then? You are missing out. Try it some time!!
ETA: I don't think that they are effective for maintaining weight loss, but I have experienced personally that adding vegetable juices to your diet can improve immunity (especially if you can't eat enough raw vegetables--which is my case due to digestive issues) and therefore overall health. It worked for me with the flu/virus as I detailed above. It could be a placebo, me thinking myself well, but regardless no harm done drinking the juices. Definitely on a juice fast you WILL lose weight because of CICO, but maintaining it is another issue.11
