HI. i just started. day 3 for me and so far i'm loving it. still unsure how many calories i should be eating, the macro stuff is confusing me. but in 2 days, i've lost 2-1/2 lbs. must be doing something right!11

I’ve been keto since last July, although my habits and planning fell off from Oct. - Dec. I have lost a total of 25 lbs. Mostly I do this because of how it makes me feel. Brain fog, fatigue, constant hunger and snacking were all things that I was suffering from but when I eat a low carb, moderate protein and a high fat diet I have practically no brain fog and tons of energy, plus intermittent fasting comes naturally most days and I finally have energy to workout. No more thinking about the next meal or snack constantly. I’m more in tune with which foods stoke cravings or cause digestive upset or headaches. The awareness of these things is totally new to me. Before I just ate and had no idea how different foods were making me feel.
I know a lot of people have visceral reactions to the word keto and think it’s a fad. I truly plan on making it my lifestyle forever and I am constantly learning more and tweaking my macros. I recommend trying paleo or doing whole 30 first. I did whole 30 and have tried clean eating for years, so I think the switch to keto came easier to me than most. It all comes down to what works for you. CICO definitely works, and it works forme too, I personally just love the keto way of eating and how it makes me feel. I think that if you can’t imagine a life without pasta, bread, and sugary desserts as part of your regular diet than maybe keto isn’t for you and that is okay. We are all on our (as cliché as it might sound) own journeys to find what works for us. If you don’t plan on making this a permanent lifestyle, I urge you to look for something you can maintain and enjoy. This isn’t a quick fix.
Feel free to add me and check out my diary. With the caveat that I am not perfect and I’m still trying to cut out sugar free Red Bull’s and various booze from my diet.

Before I went keto I was under the traditional American diet- avoided fats, ate things that the government considered "healthy." In consequence I had weekly issues with my hypoglycemia, mood, and focus in school. I tried everything from going vegan to making sure I complied with the nutritional guidelines for the year as set by the government - but nothing worked. Then my mother tried out keto and, out of curiosity, I did it as well.
Since going Keto (starting three years ago, aged sixteen) I've experienced a lot of benefits: my hypoglycemia is nonexistant, I am happier, my grades and overall focus on school has improved dramatically, and I've even noticed improvements in my athletic performance (I'm an endurance athlete). Lots of people think that eating a high amount of fat makes you fat - that's simply not true. When I first started I was 5'9 and 150lbs and 10% fat, and today I am 5'9 and 149lbs and a whopping 8% fat. The golden rule with keto is that in order to maintain or lose fat, you have to work out regularly; I learned that the hard way when I was doing EMT school and my last semester of high school. I had no time to work out, and in consequence I went from 7% fat to 13%. Fortunately after I graduated I got back to working out and decreased my fat by 5%.

I follow with a keto diet of under 50 grams of carbs a day with high fat and moderate protein from October through to the Christmas holidays. I lost 20 lb! And many many inches!
From the holidays to recently I have still been following but not as strictly, thankfully I have not put any weight back on. But I do see all of my digestive issues popping back up, so Back to the grind tomorrow! I find prepping and planning helps, obviously.

Keto for a decade+. It's not magic; you still have to measure macros/kcals consistently. Sure, there's plenty of variations/tweaks you can play around with (ex. Cycling, "refeeds", protein/fat ratios, IF, food group elimination, etc.).
Experiment a little (%s/standard guidelines do not address individuality) but don't over complicate things & stick to what you'll be most compliant with2 -
I started 8 days ago and have lost over 8 pounds. Most of that is water weight of course. I have joined some awesome facebook groups that are based on the science of Keto and have learned a ton. I setup MFP to track my macros in grams and I have been good about hitting them. I have already started to naturally fast because I'm just not very hungry and my energy level is way up. I find myself standing or walking around (I do a desk job) during meetings rather than sitting and doing more random exercise like going for walks just because i have too much energy and I'm bored. I did a year of MFP and exercise with strict CICO and in a year I lost about 15 pounds including the initial water weight so I feel like this is working well for me.3

I have been doing it for 4 days. I wasn't a heavy carb eater anyway. But I wasn't a heavy fat eater. But I am now on the good fat anyway. I am 54 years old. My skin is so silky smooth and glistening and I have so much energy. I had a few headaches at first. I must have some kind of inflammation problem. Just the slightest days on the diet and I feel like I was cured of a disease. I told myself I was going to give it 40 days. I am not going to weigh myself until then. This year I started off doing WW,HCG, and IF. I do love fasting. That made the biggest surprise. How good I felt on fasting. But I wasn't getting enough fat to extend on that for a long period of time. But I ate WW on my off days. Still felt crappy and restricted. But I found this and I am Praising the Lord I did. Go to Youtube and watch Dr.Ken Berry. He is a real Dr in Tenn. He has a ton of videos about this and a new book out called Lies. They have this type of diet in cancer centers. If you combine this lifestyle with IF. You will be a fat burning machine. You want to enjoy life because you feel good. I lost a lot of weight on Atkins 10 years ago. But every time I tried it again it failed. I was eating too much protein and processed food like his bars and shakes.Plus I was eating too much protein. Now I eat the best foods. But eating is not the first thing on my brain anymore. I can't wait to go back to my Dr. in 6 months.6

I've been doing Keto for 45 days now and am averaging close to 1/2 lb a day loss (21 lbs). More importantly, I feel great! I'm 61 years old and was slowly eating my way into the grave as I was a total carboholic. Sugar, pasta, bread...ALL the wrong things. Thought I was seriously ill and within 2 weeks, I felt like a new person. At my age...that's a frickin miracle! This IS my new WOE forever. I'm very grateful to find this plan and welcome any KETO people to friend me...it's a great journey!

My wife and I have been on Keto for 3 weeks / 2 weeks respectively now and the transformation is amazing. I started at 235# and have lost 10# in my 2 weeks and my wife has lost 16# over her 3 weeks. It is a difficult change to undertake, but the results speak for themselves. I have more energy, am generally happier, have been able to stop all medications and find myself more active than I have been in years.
We have also combined Keto with intermittent fasting and daily exercise (be it an hour at the gym, morning yoga, or an afternoon Rabat’s walk) with our meal times falling between 1PM-8PM, allowing our bodies to recuperate and reenergize during our fasting times.

I have been eating a ketogenic menu since March 11, 2017. It is not a diet for me it is a lifestyle. For the first time in my life my blood work is NORMAL, I have no aches or pains, I sleep well, I have mind clarity and my crohn's is in check. I finally found what works for me. I keep it simple high fat-moderate protein -low carb...I eat fatty sources of meat, carbs come from veggies and I keep them under 20 grams per day. Bonus I have lost 45 pounds. Life is great!

I have been on restricted (20g a day) keto since November last year. This is medically supervised for insulin resistance. The number of daily carbs can vary depending on how restricted your diet is. Since starting I have lost close to 40 pounds. My fasting BGL is down from 6.7 to 4.3mmol/L, triglycerides down from 2.0 to 1.1 and cholesterol down from 7.0 to 6.5 with no significant increase in LDL and I am off blood pressure medication completely. The first couple of weeks were difficult while my body adjusted, but now I have far more energy than I used to, no more gastric reflux and my mind feels alert.4

Agreed first Keto is not in any way Atkins. Second Keto has been around since the 1930's so it is NOT a fad diet. Keto is just a different way of eating. If you are going to make a post like this it helps to do actual research and educate your self.2 -
ok question ... I have been doing low carb, I have been adding good fats like coconut oil and real butter , olive oil and I have only been eating like below 20 carbs a day , sometimes less . I found a quick reference to a keto site , where it says 70% of daily calorie , so since I have so much to lose (over200) I get 2500 calories a day . how does that work out in my day ?? I mean how many fats do I eat compared to carbs , protein , fiber , ???? and if I eat and drink this way I am going to be way over my 2500 but way under my carb count ?? like today I had keto coffee 14g a cup , eggs bacon cheese , that was breakfast , and added real butter to eggs . all of that was like 800 calories . so do I blow off the calories and not care or do I try to stay under 2500 ?? Please Help .......I have lost 25 pounds in 65 days and my blood sugar is almost normal , I will never go into ketosis because I take lantus at night , so yeah how does that figure in LOL ok Thanks for any help at all !!!!!

I take lantus also and am doing keto using under 50 grams of carbs. I have over 100 pounds to lose also. It has been about 2 1/2months for me and I have lost about 25 pounds also. I have been slowly reducing my need for insulin and went from 70 units to 30 units of lantus as I have lost weight and become more in tune with the diet. It takes a while to get into the mindset. I am working with a weight loss doctor and he seems to believe that diabetics taking insulin CAN go into ketosis. I will have to ask about this specifically next time I am in. My calorie limit is 2000 and here is my breakdown, 50G carb (10%) 100G Protein (20%) 156G Fat (70%). My breakdown for each meal is Breakfast 30% (600 calories) Lunch 25% (500 calories) Dinner 30% (600 calories) Snack 15% (300 Calories). I try to stay pretty close to those, BUT occasionally have larger breakfasts and smaller lunches, but try to keep to the calorie count. At first I DID go over calories also and my doctor said to concentrate on keeping below 50 carbs and then tweak to lower calories. Hope this helps. You can friend me if you like, it seems we are on a similar journey.

@PQ4321 , I take 1000 mg of metformin 2x day and 22 units of lantus , when I started I was taking the same amount of metformin , but I took 30 units of lantus , when I do the keto strips I am showing trace ketosis , which is amazing , I think with the diabetic meds , Thank You for your break down of your day , I will try to keep it , to the 2500 calories . I added you , yes lets keep in touch and help each other!

There is no "should be" level for carbs when eating in ketosis. The upper threshold is often around 50g but what people choose to do really varies.
I know someone who ate around 150g of carbs, around multi hour intense bike rides, and stayed in ketosis.
I know metabolically unhealthy people who are not in consistent ketosis at 50g a day but other healthy people who are. Those with IR will often lower carbs further to improve their blood glucose numbers, and to stay in ketosis all the time.
People who use ketones as therapy for migraines or other health issues may choose to stay around 10-30g of carbs. I know some who prefer zero carbs for their digestive and energy issues.
Some start at 20g to get into ketosis faster (often combined with exercise and mct oil) and then there are others who slowly ease down to 50g (or 30g or 20g or 12g, etc).
Others go to 20g because they find more stimulates their appetite and cravings.
Do what works best for you. If 20g works, great! If zero works, fine. If you choose 45g, that is fine too. You may even find that you prefer more carbs, and don't need ketones for your health, you may want to go up to 100g and not worry about ketosis at all. Ketones aren't needed for weight loss, so if 100g works, then use that level.

A good thing to note there is how protein is moderate. with a lot to lose, you dont want to go too low with that. As calories come down, as you lose weight, fat and carbs can be cut to accommodate the caloric drop, but not protein.1
