What's the best diet or fitness advice you've ever heard?
So far, mine is something I'm sure I had heard at least once before in my life but couldn't tell you when or from who, but it's something I came to realise myself in the last few weeks which is that "Dedication trumps motivation".
I know it's cheesey, but for me it's so true! Since going back to gym properly as of December I've had a several people in my life say to me, especially in the last couple of weeks, something along the lines of "wow you're so motivated" or ask "how are you so motivated?" and I have to be perfectly honest... *I'm not!*
I'm constantly complaining that I have no motivation to get my butt in to the gym, especially on Saturdays, but somehow I end up there. Why? Because *dedication* trumps motivation and now (because I was dedicated and kept going even when I didn't want to) gym has been amazing for my mental health. For me being able to zone out from everything else for 45-90 minutes 4-6 times a week has been a godsend. Day to day I have experienced so much less anxiety since making the gym part of my regular weekly routine again.
By no means do you need to get into the gym to be healthy, that's just my personal goal, but I think this mindset applies to anything you want it to, eating (or not eating) certain foods, going for a walk, practicing self love or mindfulness, taking care of yourself, whatever it is... don't look for motivation, because motivation is fleeting, instead strive for dedication and you'll find stronger reasons to continue!

Consistancy. Stick with things and give it time to work.45

Don't start it if you can not maintain it for life. Otherwise you will keep losing and regaining.
80/20. Try for 80% good wholesome largely unprocessed foods and 20% treats. There is no such thing as good and bad food, just everything in moderation food.55 -
If you can form a bad habit, you can form a good habit. Like the OP, I don't love the gym, but it does me good and I just treat it as a necessary part of my weekly routine. Same with eating within my calorie goal as often as I can.21

Lift heavy things. Honestly, I wasted so many years with hours of pointless cardio and had nothing to show for it. Lifting that actually taxes you conditions your cardiovascular system very effectively. Wish I knew that when I was younger. Oh well.42

Learn to separate fact from fiction - be skeptical, do your research, educate yourself, and understand the basics of nutrition and physiology.19

Track everything you eat, all the time; no exceptions.

Be honest with yourself and listen to your emotions.3

Food scale. And the advice i gave myself to think of my future me. Dont hold back and not do something id like to, Or force myself to do anything i hate. Future me will look back on my current decisions with either pride or regret. I try to make choices future me will look back on with pride. Whether that be step my butt into the gym and lift some weights, Pick a solid healthy meal over that donut (or eat the yummy donut if i want, Future me likes donuts to sometimes ) Or even something as simple as clean my house or go out with friends and enjoy myself.
Future me wants to be well rounded fit and happy. Juggle your choices to best fit the needs of future you. Their all equally as important i try not to obsess and fall into leaning to far one way or another.19 -
Be consistent and look at the big picture. Worrying about the minutia of a single day is not what matters in the long run.
Also, find something that keeps you active.6 -
I know it's been mentioned already but it bears repeating. Buy a kitchen scale and use it to log everything.12

Pertaining to both diet and fitness; don't get caught up in what's touted as optimal if trying to do so isn't sustainable for your schedule and/or lifestyle.24

That always helps me keep some perspective. It's okay to slip up now and again, or take a break. The good days far outweigh the bad ones in the long run!48
