also, i have to take gummy(and they arent bears, just circles...lol) or liquid vitamins due to malabsorbtion.
i had gastric bypass...no haters, please. i had to, due to medical problems. i dont need to be judged for it on here. i get it enough in real life!!!
If you already have issues absorbing all your nutrients, why are you fasting?
i am desperate...basically, that is it. and i will do anything that doesnt put me in the hospital, now or in the future.
What problem are you hoping the fasting will solve?
weightloss... my body is very resistant
Have you tried logging here using a food scale for all solids? How many calories are you eating and how much have you been losing per week?
I'm really not qualified to determine how long a fast can be "healthy", but I personally find if I undereat one day I end up overeating the next. And I had a friend who would fast for religious purposes and then would end up hoovering every morsel of food she could find when she broke her fast. So I think for a lot of people, anything more than IF is probably not great for weight loss.
Sorry you're struggling :flowerforyou:
thanks hon. im just starting on here, and am checking everything out. i used this site for my pre op weight loss and successfully lost 40 in 6 months. i hope to find success again.2 -

You won't find it through starvation and/or malnutrition.9 -

Trust the doctor and follow what they’re telling you. Maybe you’ve just reached a plateau and it’ll correct itself? Hang in there, weight loss takes a lot of time and is a mental battle as well as physical ❤️
thanks hon, it has been 7 years. i lost 245 pounds and gained back 82 pounds and have just recently lost 8 pounds
The good news is that you are losing. Might be slower than you expect or would like, but it is still a positive step. Don't be rash and risk depriving yourself of nutrients.9 -
Not eating is a terrible idea for losing weight. When you starve your body, your metabolism shuts down and your body fights to keep every calorie and ounce of fat. If one truly wants to get healthy, they need to find the right balance of diet and exercise.22

FIFY. "Starvation mode" is fiction, it doesn't exist. I agree with the rest.5 -

if your metabolism shuts down you die end of story.

Fasting is NOT the way to go. Having fought this weight loss all my life, and spoken with various doctors, NOT 1 EVER SAID - “hey, why don’t you fast?” Or “Hey, let’s do a cleanse!” Why? Because they don’t work. It is ALL ABOUT calories in vs. calories out.
Oh - you caught that I didn’t mention exercise. Why? Because other than helping build up your endurance and helping to build muscle, it isn’t going to really help you lose weight. Yes, it makes you more healthy, but it doesn’t really help in weight loss. Why? Because you won’t ever be able to burn enough calories to allow you to have that evil chocolate cake you might want - or the milkshake, or the cheesecake, or the oreo’s - whatever.
Besides, if you eat healthy - I’m not saying only rabbit food - I’m talking about lean proteins, something akin to a higher protein, lower carb lower fat plan - then you’ll be able to lose weight as long as you eat less than you burn. Get a fitness tracker that syncs with MFP, and always stay under your burned caloric amount, and you’ll lose weight. I lost 90 pounds that way.6 -

is it healthy to get all your nutrients through powders and vitamins(whatever form), NO FOOD?
Have you asked your bariatric surgeon?
Is there a reason that eating smaller portions won't work?
i do not have contact with my surgeon anymore.
my pouch apparently is still very small, i can only eat about 6 ounces of food at a time, when i do eat. and i am 7 years post op.
Can you get in touch with another surgeon or care provider? There are doctors and clinics that will take on bariatric patients from other surgeons. You really do need legitimate medical advice in this situation.6 -

you can fast but non eating fasts I dont recommend unless its a religious practice and then that is usually only a short time,or supervised medically. I fast 16:8 most days it hasnt hurt me. as for building muscle with exercise, that wont happen often on a deficit especially a big one. and you can burn enough calories to have a slice of chocolate cake(if you are a runner, cyclist or someone who burns a lot of calories),or whatever else you want. Heck you can fit it into your calories if you want pre exercise.
as for higher protein , low fat and low carb, that may work for you but is not necessary for everyone. everyones macros will be different, higher fat may satiate some while high protein or even high carb will satiate another person. so saying that but then saying eat less than you burn is IMO conflicting info in a way. fitness trackers are also not 100% accurate in most cases they are just an estimate. I find ways to fit foods I like that some may deem unhealthy into my calories. do I go over sometimes? sure I do. building muscle is hard in a deficit, but the more muscle you have the more calories you burn, while its not a lot it helps.
you cant say that a person cant burn enough calories to have a milkshake, chocolate cake or anything else because many runners, cyclist, swimmers, do burn a lot of calories.4 -
Perhaps check out autophagy, it's an amazing natural process that begins aprox 19 hours into fasting. There's a lot of popular myth around diet. In 2016 the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Yoshinori Ohsumi for “discoveries of the mechanisms for autophagy. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5240711/14

I am three years post bariatric. Congratulations on your significant loss by the way. I have a few comments and questions.
1. Are there any foods or textures you cannot tolerate?
2. I suggest a book/program from Stanford University “Live Better Every Day”, living with chronic conditions. It’s the best resource I have ever come across.
3. What is your daily minimum protein goal?2 -

yes the other person said this " I’m talking about lean proteins, something akin to a higher protein, lower carb lower fat plan " so yes she is saying that lower fat and carbs are needed maybe not directly but thats what I got out of it. she could have said just eat in a deficit and make sure you get enough protein.
as for intermittent fasting I know its a window of time to eat your calories as I do that. But the original OP If Im not mistaken was saying fasting as in NOT eating, she said taking gummy vitamins and some protein and that she was suffering from malabsorption and was desperate and would try whatever she could as long as it didnt put her into the hospital which means to me eating very little or fasting with no food. she also said she is 7 years post op and is very resistant to weight loss.
as for referring to athletes I dont see where she said it either way. and not everyone who runs or cycles is an athlete. I can burn enough calories in a day to fit in a milkshake or many other things and Im far from being an athlete. since the OP is 7 years out of bariatric surgery. her original posts asks "How long do you believe it is healthy to sustain a fast?
(There is protein intake as well as double doses of gummy vitamins, due to malabsorption issues and upwards of a gallon of water a day)0 -
Guess I used a poor choice of words "metabolism shutting down" and maybe should have said "can slow ones metabolic rate." I know diet and exercise is different for everyone and so many people have tried multiple things and what's been successful for one, maybe won't work for another. I too have tried many things over the years and found my best success by eating (mostly) healthy and moving my body every day.8
-
And it makes me sad to know people or read about people that starve themselves in the hopes of losing weight.4
-
@KelBgess just for general awareness, many post bariatric patients are getting their minimums within 60 days of surgery.
The post care instructions I’ve seen from the US are more extreme than the instruction sheet I got here in Canada. The US guidelines are like a year long VLCD. I was achieving 1200 calories a day within a couple months, and stayed right on plan.2 -

There are mistakes that people commonly make that cause them to not lose weight that we might be able to spot if you change your Diary Sharing settings to Public: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/account/diary_settings1 -

Besides the fact that the Nobel Prize was awarded for studies on yeast, the summary you linked to also mentions that the process is non selective when nutrient deprivation is present.6 -
I use a system of nutritional cleansing and replenishment system, it’s changed my life. I also count macros. Been on this for 4 years now with my children and husband.18

I disagree with this. An average slice of cake is about 400-500 calories, and I can burn that in half an hour.
Working out helps keep energy conservation in check, as anyone who exercises would probably have otherwise not been active for that time period.
While working out is not the sole reason for losing weight, it gets the body closer to the activity levels we were evolutionarily selected for. We weren’t built to sit on our butts and binge watch other people living their lives while we continuously give ourselves a surplus of food...but lo and behold, look what we’ve done for ourselves
OP, good luck! You will find your way.7 -
^ What jdwils14 said.
I can walk for a half-hour on my treadmill at 4 mph/15% incline and burn about 400 calories, which is a slice of strawberry cheesecake. Trust me. I know these things.5
