for the past 2 days, I haven't logged. I needed to step back from counting my food and calories (although, I did admit in a former post that I actually miss doing it and started back.) I don't like numbers which is why I barely made it through Algebra. But, I was curious, why others don't share their diary? Is it because we ate something that we don't want to admit or we just forgot about doing it. Just curious, so don't give me a "Woo" or a "Thumbs down" sign. I'm just really curious and doing my own research to help me grow.

I have had it open in the past, and I've had people criticize me for not eating "clean" or whatever. And then I started reaching a point where I wasn't logging some foods to make my diary look better. So I made it private.60 -
@malibu927 I totally get that and I have felt the same as well. I want stay public (my diary) but I have gotten defensive about my food choices.. thank you for answering0

I log everything and have for years. I’m also a private person and don’t feel the need to share what I eat. I also never feel bad or embarrassed about eating anything.
Also the default is to have the diary hidden so it probably doesn’t occur to many to open it up.11 -

These forums are helpful, insightful and I admit, sometimes the drama is fun to watch, but at the end of the day you are all just a bunch of strangers on the internet. I couldn't care less what others eat, so why should anyone care what I eat.
Sometimes I play along in the 'what did you eat today' type threads, but that's it.29 -
I have to confess that I like looking at other people's diaries if they're open, mainly because I look for things that look like they might be yummy and have not thought of eating.20

My diary is open to friends, and I can't say I've ever gotten a critical comment . . . even on my occasional 5000+calorie days.
I was very consistent about logging every day while losing. In maintenance, I skip a few. When I skip, it's usually an over goal day; but I do log many of my over goal days. Typically, the ones I don't log are just very annoying to log, requiring lots of estimates - like when I've been traveling and eating almost entirely in non-chain restaurants, or much of the day consisted of potluck/buffet grazing type eating because of a workshop or family event or something. It's just not worth the hassle. I don't feel like I'm hiding from anyone, including myself. There's no point in hiding - it's gonna show on my body if I overdo repeatedly, and there's no hiding that.
I have a pretty good idea of the top end of what I can eat in a day, so I guess I could log a big quick add for those days, but I don't really see the point.13 -
I log as accurately as I can. I'm not embarrassed when I overeat, I mean, what the heck, I'm human. I don't care if someone reads my food diary. I don't care how people judge me. Today I went 45 calories over my goal. That is partly because I indulged in 2 glasses of wine. Be judgmental if you must, but it was delicious!
I'm not a numbers gal. I once took a class in college called "The History of Math" rather than the Algebra offered at 8:30 a.m., which was too early to look at numbers. But I figure if I don't log, I'm lying to myself and I appreciate the chance to see what calories are going into my mouth. I also weigh myself every day because I'm a masochist (or I like seeing progress, you decide.)7 -
I don't share because people try to copy other people's food logs on here and that would be completely counter-productive because I can eat a lot more than most people with my stats and still lose weight since I'm still breastfeeding. I also find it kind of weird that people do that. I'm honest about living a balanced life with food and not eating perfectly all the time, but I also know people can be judgemental and negative about it and I'd rather avoid it.11

I log to the meticulous gram. I do not keep an open/sharable diary because the idea of someone else viewing my diary and judging me on it is incredibly triggering for me.
And frankly, what I eat is none of anyone's business.22 -
My diary is boring. It is my responsibility to keep people from accidentally reading it.
Plus, if some people saw this last week they would be giving me grief. I have been ill most of the week and my daily calorie counts are extremely low.10 -
I log very infrequently, maybe twice a year for 2-4 weeks tops.
I have maintained for years, literally, without having to log so my diary is mainly empty, no insight for anyone, so it is closed.

My diary, my food, my choices, my business. As others have said nobody should care what somebody eats or how many calories they eat per meal or per day, including me. I do know that people judge (we are all humans after all), so I try to avoid that as much as possible. Private profile and diary.

I log everything and have for over a year.
I have no desire to debate or defend my choices with anyone - too busy working it out myself.
But I’m not sure what open or closed diaries has to do with not liking numbers and logging.5 -
Wow! This has been very insightful. I guess we have our own idea of what logging means to each of us and I’m cool with that because it means that we can’t pigeon hole ourselves when it comes to our lifestyles. Thanks again!!!3

OP, I think you're confusing terms maybe? Logging isn't letting other people see your food diary. It's logging your food to make sure you are eating the right amount of cals, or to track your macros or some other element of your diet.
I have logged every day for over 3 years. I have literally never clicked complete on my diary. I honestly don't understand the point. My diary is open to my friends if they'd like to look at it, at the very least maybe it can be proof that you can eat a fair amount of pizza and ice cream and still hit a reasonable calorie goal.
I'm accountable to myself. I take responsibility for the bad habits that caused me to gain weight, and I take credit for losing the weight and keeping it off. I don't have the type of personality where I need random people telling me I'm doing a good job, my diary told me that.
If closing out your diary and getting comments on it is motivating to you, that's awesome! I was never here for motivation, I was always here for the numbers # #19 -

I like looking at diaries for the same reason. Mine is open to friends only.... but I don’t really care who looks at it. I log everything religiously and have several of my own entries, which may not sound healthy (eg. tonight’s “Creamy Beef Stroganoff”) but all these recipes are measured out carefully, and fit within my calorie goals.
I’m losing consistently, so I’m obviously doing something right! So if someone has something negative to say about my diary (which hasn’t happened yet.... my friends are great and make positive comments, if any), I’ll try not to let it worry me.... it’s their problem, not mine!3 -
I log, even on my bad days, but my diary is private because of how many poor choices I make. My diary does not look as nice as many other peoples and I find myself comparing sometimes. I also do not like the ideas of possibly being criticized. I do not feel bad about what I eat but I do not want to face any disagreements either about my diet and how I do things. Keeping it private seems to help me stay true to myself about what I ate the whole day.3

I don't log using MFP but with another calorie counting website/forum so I disabled the link. Not "hiding" anything from anyone and if I used the one here it would be public. Heck, I don't even know if it is or not on the other site.
My food log would not make sense to people, anyways, because what my real calorie range is and what the log is set at are two different things so it looks like I am over every day when in fact I am not if I am under 1,625 kcal.1 -
I know I would lie at least sometimes if it was public and I want to be honest with myself so I keep it private. I've been logging my food here for 5 years and for about 2 years my husband did too, and we shared our diaries with each other but just for the purpose of copying over meals we ate together and recipes. That was fine but even then I very occasionally found myself "lying" at times! So silly, I know...he would never judge me for that afternoon latte I may have had occasionally. It's just better for me to keep it private.4
