I mean, okaaaayyy, may be true, probably is, but surely logging and tracking calories along with any weight loss or gain will give you a better plan to work with. If you gain when 'in a deficit' then eat less and take into account the possible 20% discrepancy.
Every time this guy starts with the 20% argument I nearly lose my eyes from rolling them so hard. I have lost around 50lbs and have not struggled against the lying companies lying about calorie numbers!
This is why a food scale is so handy. The packaging may say one cookie is 100 calories, but it will also say one cookie is 50 grams. Weigh the cookie. If it's really 75 grams, then you know it's 150 calories. Negates the 20% argument.10 -
My favorite definitely came on Monday, from a functional med doc who I am hopefully not going back to.
In discussing my food/beverage choices, he called out my once-a-day can of Diet Coke. He told me that it was causing an insulin response, and that I could probably drop 20 pounds if I cut it out. (I've gained 14 pounds due to a thyroid issue, hence why I was there -- we're trying to come up with a treatment plan, and I'm at my wits end. But please spare me the "it's all about calories." We've checked my RMR. I'm at a 30 percent calorie reduction from TDEE. My body literally is not converting the Synthroid I take to the T3 that my body uses. Lab confirmed and all.)
I'm type 1 diabetic. Have been for almost 36 years. Trust me when I say that if Diet Coke would trigger an insulin response in me, I wouldn't need my insulin pump.
(I say hopefully not going back, because I need a better game plan before I make the decision that he's not worth my time/money. I'm hoping that he's not the only one who will treat with T3, but OMG so much woo.)

Diet soda woo is some of my "favorite" woo. My grandfather had it around the house when it first came on the market back in the 1960's because he was diabetic and diabetics have been drinking it for years. The nonsense surrounding it now cracks me up.1 -

And he's sitting there telling me this with a straight face! And how he used to weigh 250 pounds, and then he cut out soda, and he was sure that it was the insulin response. And I'm thinking "Buddy, if you were drinking that much regular Pepsi, of course you gained weight. And I literally don't *make* insulin to get a response from!"
Do all these people really think that it'll just make insulin happen? If it were that easy, we wouldn't have to treat type 1 with injectable meds!3 -

I am equally amused and aghast. Definitely going to cut down on alcohol and loneliness.
I was told to eat an orange after every meal. The pounds just melt away. Same person said don't exercise longer than 30 minutes as anything over doesn't do anything.
One of my favorites, though, is to drink water at room temperature to speed up metabolism.

...Ya know, maybe it does work? But I didn't (and still don't) feel like going bananas trying that one...

That might be from the Beachbody workouts, they spout that woo to push their 30 minute a day programs. I use their workouts because they work for me, I just ignore all the Woo that they try to push.

Someone I am facebook friends with posted these within one hour of each other lol Like yes please take ACV so you don't need to have a bypass because it's totally capable of that, I mean it is magical after all...
My favorite is the picture of a raspberry where it says cherry on the fruit one. If you don't know the difference between fruits maybe you should stop giving advice on them...

My favorite generic woo is anything that claims a certain food or action "boosts your immune system". As if "boosting your immune system" was inherently a good thing. You know what you call it when a food actually "boosts your immune system"?.....an allergy.17 -

These are the ones that really disturb me. Someone adding soaked almonds or an orange to their diet is wasting their time (if they're doing it under the impression it will result in weight loss), but it's not necessarily harmful. Once you start giving people BS advice on how to handle cancer or heart disease, that's awful stuff.3 -

Not against Keto or carb restriction overall, but if you couldn't stick to it and couldn't maintain a single bit of what you lost, why is that the diet you keep going back to?10 -
My HR manager is on this new "health" kick with her wife.
Over the last week I have heard her talk to coworkers about fasting two days out of the week, putting butter in her coffee, how her juice diet "helped so much" and now she feels great and how she eats salads all the time now so the weight is just going to be dripping off. I pretty much lose my eyes in the back of my head when she starts talking about anything anyways..... This is the same lady that asked "How do you tell the difference between a 9v battery and a C battery?" - ummmmmmm face palm ....

Waffles with peanut butter and blueberries actually doesn't sound that bad though? I might hit it with some extra honey but still, it seems sound in principle.
Give up loneliness? Are there actually people out there who actively choose loneliness? As an introvert, I might change that one to "stop trying to please everybody" since you extroverts tend to get way too stressed out about what other people think.
How is fish, carrots, and green beans a 5 minute dinner? Are they eating everything raw? Ditto brown rice - what kind of miracle cooking grains do nutritionists buy that they can cook brown rice in less than 5 minutes?
I know nutritionists get a bad rap but do you not own a microwave oven? All can be zapped in the microwave for under 5 minutes.
It is impossible to go from regular dry brown rice to edible/cooked brown rice in 5 minutes... a microwave wouldn't do it. If you have pre-cooked brown rice you CAN heat it up in a microwave in a couple of minutes.4 -
You don't have to count fruits or vegetables.
It's not unusual for me to get several hundred calories a day from fruits and vegetables.9 -
I hate HATE when people say...,
"Only shop on the perimeter of the grocery store...stay out of the center aisles".
A. Different grocery stores have different layouts...in mine the ice cream and doughnuts are on the perimeter.
B. Usually staples like beans and rice are in the center aisles. These are bad?
C. We are not children that need over-simplified rules. Why not just advise people to focus on more fresh produce and lean proteins at the store? I'm sure we can all figure out where to find it.12 -

Each or together? The time only works if the latter and I'm guessing that the fish and vegetables won't come out so great. If quality if off the table, then why make a recommendation at all? Might as well call the poster "here is some crap that can be pulled out of the fridge and crammed into your food hole in less than 5 minutes".2 -

I have a $200 rice cooker from Japan. It still takes over an hour to cook brown rice.
Heating brown rice in a microwave is not the same thing as COOKING it.
On related woo: brown rice is "better" for you than white rice because it has so much more of X or that white rice is "bad" for you.
In absolute terms, brown rice may be "better" but you are talking in terms of 1.3 grams of fiber for white vs 2.4 grams of fiber for brown.
Brown rice (from most of the US) also has considerably more arsenic and phytic acid than white rice - but they don't talk about that.
They also don't talk about the fact that Japanese people eat several cups of white rice every day but have a national obesity rate of about 5%, which includes sumo wrestlers.8 -

LOL. My ex-boyfriend was all "KETO IS AWESOME! OMG I'm going to do it and I'll lose 30 pounds and it'll be awesome."
Then I pointed out that OK, dude, you like your carbs, and what's going to happen when you eat those, because that instant weight loss is water weight from lack of carbs.
He proceeded to tell me that surely it couldn't *all* be water, because nobody carries more than 10 pounds of water weight at a time.

My favourite was that essential oils can cure my anxiety. Nope it won't, but talking to a psychologist helps
Also, those who act like their way of eating is the only way to lose weight and that it's not CICO. Yes, it is always CICO.6 -

You can eat what you want as long as you exercise.
The way to a flat stomach is sit ups and a waist trainer.
Fruit is bad. You need to cut carbs to lose weight.2
