6.25 km today, putting me at 141.3 for the month and 41.3 over goal. Looking back at my stats since I started using Runkeeper, this is the most I've ever run in a month. Second highest was October 2017 with 124.2 km. Trying to decide on a good goal for next month- I want to keep pushing myself but I also know that with all the traveling I will be doing, I likely won't get as much time in as I did this month. Hmm...1

My first 5k (in awhile) is this Thursday. It's an evening race. Should I have a strategy for running this week? My plan was to do a long run today (probably 4 miles) and maybe a shorter run on Tuesday or Wednesday. What do the veteran runners think? I'm hoping for sub 10 min/mile splits. We'll see.
Also, my birthday is coming up soon, and I'm going to buy a fitness watch. What do you all suggest? I'm not sure I'm sold on a running watch, as I like to do other fitness activities, including swimming (so I'm looking for waterproof). I also don't want to spend an arm and a leg, so I'm looking for something under $200. I'm leaning towards the Samsung gear fit 2 pro.
My friend has a Garmin vivofit. I looked into it and it looks great. I ended up with the Forerunner since I primarily run and don’t do all the other activities that it tracks.1 -
I have a Garmin 920XT that I like. It was a little pricier than your spending preference, but it's nice. Has settings for run, bike, and swim, indoor and outdoor, as well as multisport and step counting. The only think I wish it had is on-board MP3s. Would be nice to not have to carry my phone if I want to listen to anything.
4 miles in a light rain, 50 deg F. Finally got my new shoes wet, so there not " my new shoes" any more. They're just "my shoes".
29.5/406 -
@zerlinna87 DCRainmaker has some great reviews that might be helpful.
I have the fenix5s, more than double the price you're looking at. It was an investment, but does biking swimming, steps, bricks, triathalons...ect. I can't think of any products that fit that price off hand.
For me, the cost of the devices work out to about 100$ a year. Others may have different experiences with them.1 -
@zerlinna87 - I purchased fenix 5hr but I paid 50%+ less than new by buying used. I found the look and style I wanted and then searched eBay, Craigslist, Offerup, etc. I know buying tech online can be scary for some but it is feasible to get a good deal.4 -
@zerlinna87 I have heard good things about the vivofit as well, but I have a Forerunner 235 since I mostly run.
As for your 5k preparation for the week, I really wouldn't do anything much different than normal, other than shorten your daily runs just a bit. Good luck Thursday!1 -

I’m kind of an activity/fitness watch junkie. I currently have a Garmin Fenix5s, a Polar M400, and a Fitbit Ionic and Versa. I’ve had about 72859506 others in the past.
I use the Garmin for my main info, training info, all my workout tracking, etc. I don’t think there’s a company out there that provides as much or as useful info and insight into training metrics as Garmin. Garmin data also transfers relatively easily to other applications (eg training peaks, adero, final surge, strava, etc).
I use the Fitbit because my work has an incentive program for steps and it only syncs to Fitbit - and my brother has a Fitbit and I’ll be damned if I’m going to lose a weekly step challenge to him. But, Fitbit does a way better job with notifications than Garmin (for me and what I want) and I find it a lot easier to find/review basic activity stats (overall calories burned/etc.) on the Fitbit app.
I got the Polar for nearly free when Sports Authority went out of business (I found it in a box of kids cleats on the last day - I think I paid $33 for it).
I had a Garmin Vivoactive HR (I still have it) that I got refurbished off amazon for $119. It’s a great watch for the money (even full price). It has all the tracking capabilities, but I don’t think it includes the training analysis (like vo2max calculations). The bonus is that it won’t scream at you that your training status is “unproductive” (the Fenix5 and 935 Have this feature).
I don’t know about the Samsung products so I can’t comment on those.
I’ve used lots of brands and still always gravitate back to Garmin for my training needs. Others do well in lots of areas but just don’t offer the holistic package that Garmin does.
Plus the Garmin race predictor seems like the technology equivalent of “I’ll hold your beer, you got this!” (At least for me-it’s incredibly optimistic).

My Fitbit died when I got caught in a rain storm during a run. So not waterproof and after a year the battery life sucked. I had to charge it almost everyday.
Maybe they’ve improved in the last year? I had the Charge HR1 -
@AlphaHowls Congratulations on your race!!!0

@shanaber Yes, it was a charity race so not a big deal. I had another one this month a 10k official race at which I run at easy pace since I just recovered from an injury. At this race the bib didn't work at the finish lane so I never finished and I have no official time
@7lenny7 Crazy race you had there as well

I am a strong believer in the Garmin line. Here are three Garmins around that price range in a nice side by side compare:
https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/catalog/product/compareResult.ep?compareProduct=571520&compareProduct=529988&compareProduct=541225
You can get them:
Forerunner 235 : $172 at Amazon for a refurb or $250 for new
Forerunner 635 : $300 at Amazon for new
Vivoactive 3 : $280 at Amazon for new
Of the three, only Vivoactive has swim tracking, but they are all waterproof. As someone mentioned up thread, DCRainmaker has detailed reviews on all these things:
https://www.dcrainmaker.com
I have the forerunner 935 which is way out of your price point but will probably be buying my wife the 235. At $171 it is a steal. IMO. But it does not have swim tracking which you specifically called out.

I made my goal for April! I didn't think I was going to make it since I had to cut my long run short last week, but I did!
This morning's run was really good. I went 12 miles which is my longest run to date. I'm really getting excited for my HM in 3 weeks. The weather this morning was perfect. I am hoping that it will be similar in 3 weeks, but you never know.

Nice weather in Orlando this weekend, so no running, just cycling. It was tough though ... a little faster than I would like.
One more run tomorrow to finish April.
My daughter ran the Big Sur marathon today. She said it was "very tough but INCREDIBLE!" She finished in 5:08 which is her worst marathon time but she was coming off an injury the last 6 weeks so happy she was cleared to run. She said the last 8 miles she walked up the hills and ran down... they were just too steep.
And here she is afterwards:
4/1 - 3.65 miles to Buckingham Palace, + strength training W9-B
4/2 -Tabatas in the hotel gym
4/3 - 5 miles Hyde Park
4/4 - strength training + 1 mile treadmill
4/5 - 5 miles Hyde Park - last day in London
4/6 - rest/travel day
4/7 - 4 miles on treadmill
4/8 - 25 miles cycling + strength training W9-C
4/9 - 5 miles
4/10 - strength training w9-D
4/11 - 5 miles + strength training W10-A
4/12 - 5 miles
4/13 - rest day!
4/14 - 43 miles cycling
4/15 - 40 miles cycling + strength training W10-B
4/16 - 3 miles + strength training W10-C
4/17 - 5 miles
4/18 - strength training w10-D

6.85km today... Ran 6km with no walk breaks! I don't think I've ever done that before...maybe back in January...?
It was a little cool with the wind but the sun was warm so it all evened out. I got into a groove and just kept running. This brings me to almost 37km on the month! I might make goal for the first time ever!8 -
