It's April! You're gonna need to run off all those chocolate bunnies and peeps (not to mention ALL the stuff you can eat now that Lent is over), so come run with us.
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive and it get's very talkative. Miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still welcome to join us. No requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to keep you accountable and enjoy a virtual coffee with your fellow runners after you run. Make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the March 2018 Running Challenge which can be found at:
http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10646713/march-2018-running-challenge#latest
Anyone can join in. New & Old. And if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members that are total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch.
Here are the details from last month that applies here again.
You can set your goal now but wait until April 1st to start logging your runs... Maybe this is Stans April Fools Joke?
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/21182-monthly-running-challange
(We also have a strava group and Facebook group.)
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did. (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread) Keep a running tally of what you did this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chat it up even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things to include running. Very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time). Talk about a recent race or one coming up. Ask questions, provide answers, or just learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs, follow what many other people are doing. Even look at last month's thread that I posted above.
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker.
Then you need to update it after you do a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your pin in that you set when you created your ticker account.
Then where it says "Your current cumulative value, there is an add button. Just add what you just did and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
Now after you added your new miles (or km's) to your ticker you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting on how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the img tags around that link. So it will look, (removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets. ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker.
1: Use the link that ends in .png
2. Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
3. remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
4. YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow they are(unless you find a dead body- then you're a mere jogger). No judgment here. We all started somewhere. No comparisons, except to your former self. Don't compare my Chapter 20 to your Chapter 1.
“I often hear someone say I’m not a real runner. We are all runners, some just run faster than others. I never met a fake runner.” – Bart Yasso
“The man who moves a mountain begins by carrying away small stones.” – Confucius
We all know that if you run, you are pretty much choosing a life of success because of it.” – Deena Kastor
“Most people run a race to see who is fastest. I run a race to see who has the most guts.” – Steve Prefontaine
“Get going … walk if you have to, but finish the damned race.” – Ron Hill
"If you run, you are a runner. It doesn’t matter how fast or how far. It doesn’t matter if today is your first day or if you’ve been running for twenty years. There is no test to pass, no license to earn, no membership card to get. You just run." - John Bingham
Good luck! And happy running (or walking or treadmilling, ect). If you have any trouble or have questions, please feel free to PM me.

Thanks @Elise4270 for getting this thread up!
I have a half marathon this month, so I'll need a mini-taper for that plus a little recovery time. With that, I'll go for 280 miles this month.8 -
I'm not cleared to walk or run. And don't see the doc for another 16 days, then I'm out of town for a week on business.
So, I'm going to say zero (with a one in front of it).
@Stoshew71 Hope all is well with you.7 -
I'm not where I want to be with training yet, so my goal is 95 miles for April.6
-
Timely thread for me! I just completed the c25k program today. I never considered myself a “runner” before, but I have actually grown to enjoy it! My first 5k is scheduled on April 1st. I am currently running about 2.5 miles (with an additional 1-2 miles of walking) 3 days per week. My goal for April is 40 miles of running. I know it’s not much compared to most here, but it’s a start for me.20
-
I'm in. Let's say 100km this month.
Thanks for starting the thread this month @Elise4270.
2018 Races:
1/1/18 Resolution Run 5K ~38:00 (no official times)
3/4/18 MEC Road Race #1 10K 1:30:57
3/17/28 St Patrick's Day race 10K 1:24:53
4/7/18 Jasper Half Marathon
4/22/18 MEC Trail Race #1 5K
5/20/18 MEC Trail Race #2 10K
6/24/18 MEC Trail Race #3 15K
8/18/18 Edmonton Marathon 10K
9/2/18 MEC Trail Race #4 10K
10/7/18 MEC Trail Race #5 15K8 -
Not picking a mileage goal, but targeting completion of my first 25k trail race. Not sure what I'm doing after that.10
-
Thanks for April thread @Elise4270.
140km / Month and I start in a taper for the Jasper Half Marathon next weekend. Promises to be an epic Snow trudge.6 -
Hmm... 175k maybe? I set that a bit low, mainly because mileage is not my main goal - getting to the start line healthy is more important.
Additional goals:
- Strength training 3x/week (nothing impressive, just my little circuit on our weight machine)
- More bike rides (anything this month would count as "more", so maybe 1x/week for longer than taking son to school)
Upcoming races:
4/8 Lublin 10k
5/13 Lublin Marathon
Need to pick a summer trail HM, maybe in the Tatry Mts
9 -
Hi can I join in?
I'd like to manage 100km this month, not sue it's going to happen but I'll try.
In the middle of tapering right now but got a 10km Comic Hero fun run next Sunday and then Brighton marathon on the 15th.10 -
Not going to be able to run as much as my schedule is changing. So ima shoot for 85 miles.4
-
I'm in for 40 miles this month. Last month was a complete disaster but I'm back on it this month.7
-
Aaapril......run she will.7
-
I made 185 for March so I'll set April goal at 175.6
-
I'm in. Found the thread too late to join last month.
My goal will be 75km. Still a beginner. I'm currently doing ZR5K to work on my pacing. I'm also in several challenges in my Running Club for the month as well as some personal ones to keep me motivated.
No races scheduled so far but might try a trail run end of the month.9 -
Thanks @Elise4270 !
Not sure what I will his this month since I will have a taper near the end, so I will let you know my goal on or about 4/30.8 -

I'm right there with you! Just finishing up c25k. I haven't made a goal yet, but I'm really enjoying this group.10 -
This is a first for me. I get to declare my goal in the comments section. hahahaha
I will try for 150 miles again. Half Marathon next Saturday so I am tapering this week. And who knows how much recovery I will need the week after.
OK! I did 10 miles this morning. Happy Easter everyone. And thanks @Elise4270 again for covering for me and setting this up.14 -
Going to aim for 50 kms this month. Only made just shy of 17 last month due to various things.8
-
With last month being a scary one for me for me, I am still a little "gun shy".
I did have an appointment with pulmonologist last week & he said I was cleared to run again, yet I'm still having further testing & am on 2 inhalers. ("looks like possible asthma, at least exercise-induced")
So, for this month, I'll back up and play it a little conservative: 20 miles9 -
April goal: have a desire to live and run again on 4/15. Other than that, all bets are off. I might not even post mileage or much at all this month.
Edit to add: is there a way to move this to the challenges forum?6 -
I'll try this as I need the encouragement and accountability. I do not consider myself a runner but in the past have grown to like it. Last year was down with surgery and arthritis issues so I'm basically starting over. I will try and do 20miles this month in addition to other exercise.6
-
I will be out of town all week due to a work conference. I will try to squeeze a run in but I doubt I will have time for it
April mileage goal = 125 miles6 -
My goal this month is to finish my training plan—a tweaked version of Hal Higdon’s Intermediate 5K. I’ve replaced an easy run and a rest day with a bike and a swim. I’ll end up at about 45m run.
My goals for the year are to set new PRs in the 5K (<29:02) and sprint tri (<2:00:34).
* March 10: O’Shenanigan’s 5K - 33:41
April 28: MahoneySabol 5K
All summer:
- Lake Terramugus Tri Series
- Cedar Lake Tri Series
September 8: Hartford Women’s Triathlon
September 30: Apple Harvest 5K
4 -
My mileage for each month will be based on the estimated mileage in my marathon training plan. My marathon is at the end of September. This month, I will run at least 60 miles. I’ll also have 2 strength training days per week.
4/1: 2.5 miles
Upcoming Races:
Wineglass Marathon 9/305 -
Goal this month is 40km. The weather has really held me back these past two months, as well as the whole not being able to walk cuz my foot hurt so *kitten* much thing. New month new start and hopefully April is kind to us weather wise.4
-
This is a first for me. I get to declare my goal in the comments section. hahahaha
I will try for 150 miles again. Half Marathon next Saturday so I am tapering this week. And who knows how much recovery I will need the week after.
OK! I did 10 miles this morning. Happy Easter everyone. And thanks @Elise4270 again for covering for me and setting this up.
Good to hear it was just absent mindedness! We'd hate to lose our fearless, all-knowing leader.2 -
Edit to add: is there a way to move this to the challenges forum?
Let's look into it.
ETA If I have started the thread in the wrong place, I may be able to move it. But i can not see where it'd need to be moved too. Is "challenges" in the Fitness and Exercise thread, it be it elsewhere?
ETAA i see where now. I don't see that i can move it without the help of the mods. The groups home page says the challenge is found in the Fitness and Exercise thread, so there i put it. Change is good. here we shall stay. we'll be fine.
ya'll just bookmark it.
5 -
April will likely be a lower month than my monthly target of 168 Miles...main goal is to stay fit and be able to run Marathon on 5/6.
That said, have a HM this upcoming Sat, a 15 mile test pacing trail race a coupe weeks after that and then tapering near the end of the month all while trying to balance training with plantar issues on left foot (ie. Need to rest it a few days after 22 miler yesterday)5 -
@juliet3455 @Stoshew71 @7lenny7 @WhatMeRunning. I'll hop on the computer and set it up, if someone doesn't get it before I figure it out.
Unless I missed it, and it's posted. I vote @juliet3455 also be given privileges.
I accept if you want to add me in as a mod.2 -
Ok so after MONTHS AND MONTHS AWAY.... I'm back! (Not an April Fool's joke!) Looking to do 100+ miles in April. I tore my right gastroc at the end of September, so ran nothing in October, then I was cleared to run in November... yet spent November through February being lazy and maybe depressed (seasonal affective blows) and gaining 10 lbs and running maybe 12 miles a week on average.
However as of mid-March I'm back on the training train, and my running mojo is back now that we have longer daylight hours again! I'm still working through some tightness in my left heel/calf that I've had for almost 2 years and which I've discovered is caused by tightness in my left QL, hip flexors and adductor. So I'm working on that with a physio + doing strength work and plenty of yoga/stretching/rolling.
And so! Let's start those April miles!
4/1: 7 miles
April miles: 7
Goal miles: 100
Upcoming Races:
April 29: New Jersey Marathon 4-person relay
May 20: Watershed 10k trail race12
