So I sleep ate last night...

...and I didn't sleep log.
I am still weirded out about it. I ate my lunch last night while asleep. I haven't sleep-walked since I was a kid that I know of. The only good news is that I ate my lunch and I didn't pig out on peanut butter or something. I have only a good guess at the calories seeing that I didn't sleep weigh anything.
It was semi-lucid. I knew something was wrong with what I was doing but unable to stop. I cooked chicken from raw and I suppose I checked the temperature because the thermometer was out but who knows what dream brain saw.
This kind of thing is only supposed to happen in sitcoms like 30 Rock when Liz was doing it, right?
Thoughts?

Do you by any chance taken Ambien?4

My sister used to sleep eat at the height of her anorexia. Have you been undereating?6
-
I did under-eat a good chunk of last week due to sickness. By Saturday I was definitely feeling malnourished and weak. I have been eating well this week and consciously trying to replenish myself.
No, no ambien.
The only other thing that is different is I am taking Magnesium on the suggestion of the sleep thread.1 -

I have zero experience with this so take it how you want: I do know that there are many people that say magnesium causes them very vivid dreams because it promotes deep sleep and sleepwalking happens during deep sleep so....if you have a history of sleepwalking, maybe there's a connection.5

I'm on a fairly high dose of magnesium as part of my migraine protocol, and I barely remember my dreams. Our daughter is a sleep walker who has eaten a time or two at night if she's been busy during the day and not made time to eat (she's an adult!). I'll have to make sure she never takes any magnesium.2

Put an alarm on your bedroom door or something? We have not very expensive but loud alarms on our outer doors and windows because of my dd. They could be installed on interior doors too.
I'd worry less about calorie intake and be kind of more concerned that you cooked in your sleep and may hurt yourself in future doing something in that state.
See a doctor about the sleep walking?9 -
An extreme solution but padlock the food cupboards. Hopefully sleepwalking you isn`t dextrous enough to unlock it?0

Padlocking won't work. When we sleepwalk and do tasks, our hind brain is in control so we retain all of our motor skills. What we can't do is make rational decisions which is why you can be aware of your actions but not stop them.2

OP cooked while sleepwalking. I somehow doubt that a padlock would be much of a barrier.
My brother once took out ALL light bulbs in the house while sleepwalking. That was fun. Docs eventually found out that he was having paradox reactions to paracetamol. Making sure he never has that stuff ensures that he no longer sleepwalks.
OP, I hope it was either a one time thing for you or that you find the trigger if it happens more often.4 -

I take magnesium, and I definitely have much more vivid, memorable dreams as a result. A couple of others that I know take it also have vivid dreams from it. But it's never made me sleepwalk. If you have a history of sleepwalking, though, maybe it would exacerbate it?0 -

When i was married I used to tell my husband that we should go clubbing ( i dont even dance ) And I wouldn't remember the conversation at all. It was the best sleep aid i've ever used otherwise.1 -
I live in fear of stuff like this. I was a heavy sleep walker until I was 12 and now I only sleep walk during times of great stress. I’ve never cooked or eaten while sleep walking, but I have a tendency to go outside and wander off. My poor mother never got much sleep.3

I think it needs to happen at least once more for me to take any drastic steps and I am not sure a doctor can do much until a pattern emerges.
The feeling afterwards was rough. It took hours for me to calm down. I didn't even eat my first meal until late afternoon. It didn't help that it rained here all yesterday and the house was dark and gloomy. I don't spook especially easy but I was spooked. I am still concerned about the doneness of the chicken. I am still in the window of getting sick and will be for another couple of days. The kitchen has been wiped down in case of cross contamination.
My instinct tells me it has something to do with being sick last week and so many days of under 1k calories. It could be a mixture of that and the new magnesium. I was not in good shape this last Saturday and even though I have gone out of my way to eat nutrient filled foods my chemistry could still be a bit off.

My daughter was a sleep walker when she was pre-teenaged. I don't know if she still does it, but when she was super stressed about something (tests, auditions, etc.) she would sleep shower and sleep get ready for school.
It was pretty stress-driven.
If you're stressed (about life, diet, etc.) this could be your body's way of telling you to take a diet break or something of the like. Combine that with a low calorie week, and your body is just messin' with you.1 -

Not just Ambien. I'm on zopliclone and am ok if I wake up naturally but if I get woken up boy am I a stumbling drunk. I first started taking it in hospital and they wake you for 7 am vitals. I'd fall back asleep and wake up around 10 not remembering if the nurse gave me my morning meds, what my blood pressure was and even who my nurse for the day was. I'd call for my meds and ask what my bp was and she said oh you asked the same question 3 hours ago. It was freaky.1 -

Well I am much more stressed now than before I did it that is for sure. I had to keep telling myself today when I was eating lunch that it was okay and it was the right time of day. I don't think, otherwise, my stress level is outside the norm. I was a little concerned about last week and how much of what little I was eating was actually being processed and how much was being forcibly ejected. I know the body is really resilient though so I wasn't too alarmed and it wasn't even the worst stomach bug I have been through.
Man I am being a rambling fool about this thing. I need to get a grip.

When I was in early recovery for my eating disorder I did this often. Whole boxes of cereal more than once. I had extreme anxiety around food and learning to eat healthier which was triggering night binges in my sleep.2 -
I've been known to get up to use the bathroom and instead of going back to bed, making a peanut butter on a spoon pit stop in the kitchen... half asleep. I log it as AM snack the next day and then ask myself "WTF?"2

I understand completely how you feel.
I went through a similar thing for about 4 or 5 months, about a year or year & 1/2 ago.
I would go to sleep and then I would do one of 2 things. I would either literally bolt out of the bed in a fight or flight anxiety attack, which is very horrible and scary by the way OR I would not remember getting up and eating. At its worst I would wake up in the morning and find the evidence of my eating. 4 Empty protein bar wrappers at my computer desk. Candy wrappers at my bed. If the evidence hadn’t been staring me in the face I probably wouldn’t have remembered that it had happened. Once I saw the evidence it would bring about a very vague memory.
I ended up going to my doctor that sent me to a sleep specialist. After the sleep test said very mild sleep apnea, I was then sent to a psychologist. What they ended up calling it was “sleep eating” which is a sleep disorder and not an eating disorder. I still don’t know what caused it or why it eventually went away. Some things they brought up was severe anxiety from suppressed memories. General anxiety disorder( which I’ve had all my life) Or a rebound effect from long term dieting.
I can tell you that I sleep much better now and have had no further episodes for about a year or so. I’m on 500mg of magnesium and 1/2 mg of Xanax every night.
If this continues to happen please see a doctor about it. I gained about 15 lbs and felt like I was losing my mind during this period. You can’t be getting proper sleep when you are up moving around and eating instead of sleeping.
One or two episodes I wouldn’t get too worried, but don’t go as long as I did before seeking help.
My best to you.7 -
Did you by chance have night terrors as a kid?0
-
Thanks @frankiesgirlie . I will certainly keep that in mind and considering how freaked out I got over it, it is not something I will play around with if further episodes occur. The one difference between your episodes and mine is that I knew what was happening to some degree. When I woke up the next morning I was praying it was really just a dream but part of me knew better and, of course, there was evidence.
The other thing is the timing. I did it sometime between 11:30 and midnight. That is when I fix my lunch just in the AM not the PM. I was sure it was lunch time and I even remember looking at the dark window a few times but it would not register except as a notion this was wrong somehow. I look back and I realize I was trying to break through but I was too far underwater and unable to get to the surface. I was trapped in my own brain and it is a very unsettling experience.
Anyway, I am glad your experiences are in the past and I hope they stay there.7 -

No and I think my sleepwalking episodes as a child never even hit double digits. It was really mild stuff like digging through my closet or something.0 -
Please let us know how this plays out for you. I wish you all the best!!2

The verdict is in. The chicken was not done enough or I cross-contaminated in the process of cooking it. I felt decent until just after lunch and it has been a rough ride since. I am confused though because isn't it normally just a couple of days to get sick? It has been 4 1/2 days. I guess if I cross-contaminated and didn't catch it I could have become infected later than the sleep event.

Madison feels as if a hammock over a bed of flowers would help because the smell is so relaxing and makes you stay in bed1

Such a bummer! So sorry and hope you feel better soon. I would have thought you would have felt symptoms within 24 hours? Idk. You have my sympathy.1
