Somebody lectured me about Splenda today

Late to the party. Back in my rebel kid days, when I smoked, I was out on a break having a cigarette and a rando nurse I'd never seen before said "those things will kill you" as she walked by.
I dropped my jaw to the ground and threw my cigarette on the ground, dramatically stomping it out. "WHAT?!? NO! WHY HAS NO ONE TOLD ME IN THE 12 YEARS OF EDUCATION I WAS FORCED TO SUFFER THROUGH THAT THESE WILL KILL ME! I ONLY KNEW THAT THE COOL KIDS DID!" and on and on with the hysterics until she realized I was being a jerk and walked away.24 -
I was in a Panera getting breakfast once and opted for a Diet Coke to go with my egg sandwich. The elderly woman next to me said, "Soda?!? For breakfast?!?" She was shocked, I tell you. Shocked!
LOL. I've ordered soda for breakfast for decades for my caffeine fix. I hated coffee. So, I got used to the comments and weird looks. I simply responded that I hated coffee. Although, I like coffee now, so I'll have to think up a different comeback...

I always use my old fav scrubs adage when someone says something rude/out of turn to me:

I used to drink a 2 liter of Mt. Dew Code Red a day when I was much larger. I will take my chances with diet soda vs diabetes in a bottle. 1 gram of carb in 20 oz diet mt dew, 77 grams 290 cals in a regular Mt. Dew. Just saying10

The kicker is that he was slamming a Red Bull at the time.
I said nothing.
Aren't bull testicles all natural? LOL4 -
Next time inform the food Nazi that there is a patent pending on the production method used to mfg Truvia they are ingesting and youve never heard of a patent on a naturally growing food, Truvia is mixed with erythritol and did they know it is highly processed and nowhere near the simple Stevia plant. Kill them with knowledge12

I'm shocked that nobody has come into this thread to profess everyone's doom for using artificial sweeteners. There's always one.12

About a month ago at work I was getting food on my lunch and when I went to grab a diet soda this random customer decided to tell me how awful artificial sweeteners are just because they make him sick and there's so much research on their problems. I finally told him "just because they make you sick doesn't mean they make me sick, I have no issues and I know many others who have no issues with them." It was a weird moment...I don't think I'd ever seen him in the store before. And, you know, he was taking up my already short lunch break.
Ugghh. And now every time you go to the store on your lunch break you're going to have that little moment of shoot, I hope he's not there today.
It's funny, as passionate as I've seen people get on these boards about the evils of artificial sweeteners, I've never seen anyone post that they would walk up to a perfect stranger and try to convince them to avoid the evil chemikalz. I'm having a very hard time trying to get inside the mind of someone who felt compelled to save random others from themselves.
edited for clarity
I work at the store. Never saw him in 18+ years before that.
And because you work there, u have to bite your tongue.... been there.3 -
so rude on so many levels. nothing like a dietary SJW pushing their *knowledge* upon you. next time feign deafness. works for me every time.3

Not with food, but every time a co-worker or client finds out I ride my bike to work they say, "YOU ARE GOING TO DIE!" and then proceed to tell me a story about someone who died on a bike. I wouldn't bother me so much if it wasn't so frequent. The advantage of it happening all the time is I get to play around with different comebacks, but I haven't found a favorite yet. Mostly I'm just baffled that people think they are being helpful by announcing my mortality.
"Why - do you aim for bike riders accidentally or purposely?"
Trying that one next! I can't wait!7 -
I was checking out at the grocery store and the cashier started lecturing me on my diet coke! I was so surprised, I just stared at her. I get enough comments from my family and friends, but I’m not giving up my caffeine free diet coke.5

Yesterday, I accidentally bought some no sugar added light ice cream with splenda. Mint chocolate chip, Publix "supreme" brand. It's pretty good... I will eat it, which will likely take me a month or more, and I won't purposefully buy it again. So I won't be lecturing strangers in a coffee shop. In a forum here when it comes up for discussion/debate, I share my opinion it's better not to use artificial sweetener because it seems more likely to increase cravings more than satisfy them, but it doesn't do that to every one. But to a stranger in public? No, just no...
I have to ask - how can you take a month to eat a container of ice cream??
Yeah, people have strong opinions on all kinds of food issues, and mostly we all manage to line up at the grocery checkout without more than a side-eye at the contents of other people's carts. I really can't fathom what would drive a person to confront strangers in public about their choices, risking bodily injury I would think if they hit on someone's hot button.
I look at the side of the carton and see serving size is 63g and I weigh out that much when I have it and won't have it every day. I don't deprive myself of it; I eat some sweets pretty much every day. I just don't have ice cream every day. Sometimes not even every week. The sugar I crave most is fruit. I could eat a whole fresh pineapple or half a watermelon. I would almost certainly regret it.7 -

I'd definitely take that up with the store management. There's no call for employees to be lecturing customers. Ever.18 -
Since I frequently vacation in the South, I hope I can remember the perfect come back that sounds nice, but, I have been told is really a non-vulgar way of saying, "F#$# off!"
"Why bless your heart. Don't you trouble yourself on my account."15 -

I would just smile sweetly and say, "oh, I'm so sorry. You appear to have mixed me up with someone who actually gives a *kitten*".7

Well, I don't know that I'd risk someone potentially losing their job over it, but I might say something to the cashier along those lines.
"Is it consistent with company policy for you to lecture customers on their purchases, or is this something I should ask your manager? Perhaps in the future you should keep your opinions to yourself."
Something like that.17
