Hi All. This past Tuesday I said enough is enough. I started the potato diet. All I do is eat baked, microwaved or boiled tatoes. No sour cream or butter. I am going to do it for two weeks. Then I plan to add veggies and limited fruit. I’m taking vitamins. So far I’ve lost four pounds in five days. I havd tried a lot of diets that left me hungry or miserable. This one seems to be working. Also today I had hard boiled egg and tuna packet. Feel like I need little protein. Is anyone else doing this plant based approach ?

Thanks! The only think is takes planning. You have to take your potatoes everywhere lol. Btw I’m 56 and wAnt to lose 100 lbs. I know it will take time. And I know I can’t keep doing this for the long term .... just enough to get inspired.1

There is no way you are getting proper nutrition from just potatoes, why do you think this is a good plan?
Your body needs a variety of foods, it needs plenty of protein, fat, and fiber. With 100 lbs to lose, you need to have the long term view in mind. Potatoes, veggies, and fruit is not a balanced diet, and not something you will be able to stick to long enough to lose all that weight.
Get inspired by starting a plan that will work for the long term and into maintenance, not by stressing out your body by eating a dangerously restrictive diet.
Put your correct stats in to MFP, tell it you want to lose 2 lbs per week, eat a varied diet full of nutritious and yummy foods, log accurately and consistently, and move more whenever you can.
There are plenty of folks on this forum who lost 100+ pounds by eating regularly and without fad diets. Please take care of yourself!16 -
Hi there. I totally appreciate what you are saying. And I agree it’s not realistic to do this for a long period of time. Let’s face it. Life gets in the way and you have parties, holidays etc. which makes it difficult. But I’m looking for something to cleanse me , satisfy my hunger and give me a boost of energy. That’s why I said I’m adding some protein by occasionally eating eggs or other lean things. I should not really claim it’s totally plant based. I’ve tried being on here before but the stuff I was eating wasn’t the right stuff.
I’m not sure Keto is for me. I tried Atkins and it made me feel sick. So as long as I can I’m going to follow this. I was hoping to find fellow members on here that were into it. Thanks.7 -

Potatoes aren't going to cleanse you... or give you any more boosts of energy than a regular meal that is a good balance of protein, fat and carbs. In fact, eating potatoes by themselves could cause insulin reactions. Carbs are processed differently when eaten alone versus with a protein/fat.
You do what works for you, but when you are ready to eat normally, you don't have to do keto/atkins/etc. Just eat a good balance of foods you enjoy. Weigh your food and log it. Stick to your MFP calorie goal. You'll lose weight.10 -
Thanks for the encouragement ! I just need to stay on this path.5

Curious as to where you heard about this potato diet.
Honestly, it sounds awful. And I love potatoes4 -
Getting sufficient fat and protein for good health, carbs not so much. I'd suggest planning and preparing a more varied and realistic diet - you don't have to go to extremes (of the potato diet or something like keto), but can eat a larger variety of foods and still get results.0

I first heard about it when I read Kevin Smith (celebrity) had heart surgery and was told he had to lose 50 lbs. he did the potato diet and lost 20 in two weeks. He’s not on it anymore, in fact he’s doing weight watchers. Another person who claims weight loss was Penn Gillette. He claims a 100 lb loss. He eats the potatoes and does salads. The original person was an Australian who lost 100 lb in a year. He does add things to the potatoes like almond milk for mashed and has some kind of program called spud fit. He also said it’s ok to eat sweet potatoes. I’m happy doing this as it fills me up and I don’t eat at night anymore. I love potatoes. I don’t have a problem with eating them. Sure it’s boring but I season my potatoes using many different spices and Butter Buds7

It is never smart to make health choices based on what celebrities say they did.
I'm sorry to hear you feel the need to stick to such an unhealthy diet, but sometimes we just have to learn the hard way. When you inevitably start to feel bad or hit the proverbial wall, please don't give up on losing weight. Come back to this thread, read the replies, read the Most Helpful Posts thread pinned to the top of each forum, and start again in a healthy and safe manner. Best of luck.12 -
I don’t think it’s that unhealthy, to be honest. Potatoes have most of the nutrition we need. People have survived on them. And I have enough experience with weight loss programs to know it’s a challenge and what to watch out for. I’ll continue to be on here to read about other folks. Thank you all10

there are no wrong or right things to eat except just less of it,(or you have a medical issue.allergy or intolerance to a certain food) but you do want to make sure you get enough protein, fats and fill in the rest with carbs to make a balanced diet. you arent eating a balanced diet a potato has NO fat or sodium and very little protein. you need all of those things and not in the small amounts you will be getting doing this diet. and your organs cleanse your body. vitamins also dont have protein and fats in it either. so taking a vitamin isnt really going to help2 -

a tuna packet anda boiled egg isnt enough protein for most toddlers and losing 4 lbs in 5 days is water weight mostly.5 -

This sounds insane. If you want to lose weight do it in a way which isn't silly at best and potentially harmful at worst. I may not be a celebrity, but I have lost 122 lbs, since you seem to base how much attention you pay to advice on how much weight has been lost. I did it by eating normal food I enjoy in amounts less than the calories I expended.
The potato diet as you've described it seems to avoid fat - which is necessary for your brain to work. Try it for very long and watch your hair start to fall out.8 -

"Following the potato diet may not harm you for the short-term, but when you look at the big picture, eating nothing but potatoes means you’re consuming very small amounts of fat and protein, he explains, which can be detrimental over a prolonged period of time and can even put you at risk for deficiency. This can tank your energy levels, weaken your immune system, make you feel hungry, and mess with your concentration."
" Taylor's experiment doesn't prove that a bucket of spuds is the key to weight loss. Any diet that puts you in a caloric deficit will help you lose weight, says Dr. Nadolsky. So yes, you could eat just Twinkies, or pizza (like this guy), or pretty much anything else, and you could drop pounds if you are burning more calories than you are taking in."
Why are you against eating a balanced diet in a deficit?2 -
I’m curious. What would be a good source of information ?
In the article they strongly do not recommend doing it long term. I don’t intend to do so because I know a lack of fat and protein would affect me. But it’s a choice. I don’t particularly think being eating hi protein is that great either for you but some folks swear by it.3 -
I’ll be honest in here. I’ve tried a lot of programs with various degrees of success. Weight watchers was too much work with the points etc. T benefit of this plan is freedom from making food choices. No longer do I have to read all those labels. No longer do I have to weigh my food. No longer do I have to endure hunger pangs. This is simple and easy to do. I felt a huge relief grocery shopping. It’s tremendously stressful to shop the old way. Hope it makes sense.0

1200 calories of potatoes: requires 1.6kg of potatoes for the day (that's 3.52lbs)
1.6g of fat
25.6g of protein
No B12 or vitamin D, low in other elements as well. Hit several other vitamins and minerals though.

i just mentioned this to my boyfriend and he heard about it as well on a podcast (he's not on it). He mentioned it's a mental challenge to get your body used to eating the same thing. And that the movie star , I think Kevin?, would just eat the potatoes plain. Good luck and let us know how it pans out for you. I love sweet potatoes but it would be hard for me to just eat potatoes. Are you on it for two weeks? That probably won't be too bad. It would be hard to sustain long term.1

too little protein like what you are doing isnt healthy either. as for high protein from the research and studies I have done there is no mention of a certain amount of protein that is too much unless you have kidney issues. but its recommended to get at least .6-.8 grams per lb of body weight, some say upwards of 1g or more when losing weight.
you need to find peer reviewed scientific sources a good one is www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov. listening to articles written by people whom most of them do not have any background in nutrition or anything else and should be avoided. same with celebrity diets most of them are crap .
I eat upwards as much as 150g of protein a day and have had no ill effects on my health. Then there is also this that happens with too little protein intake and not enough of the right nutrients https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/kwashiorkor/ although this might not happen short term. look up what can happen from too little protein intake2 -
Yes two weeks. Then I will expand to fruits veggies perhaps beans lean protein almond milk nuts. So far I haven’t been bored. I do season potatoes. And the sweet tatoes are my dessert.4

Everyone's entitled to make their own choices. You are an adult, and can decide on your own what's right for you and what isn't.
I'm just curious how many other diets you have tried in the past and what are your plans to sustain any weight loss you may have from an all potato diet?
While I don't agree with this all potato diet or diets in general, I wish you the best of luck in losing those 100lbs.7 -

When most people say they want to lose weight, they really mean they want to lose fat. Your plan is a fast track to losing muscle - probably not the goal you're aiming for? Unless you provide your body with sufficient protein, which you won't by limiting your diet to potato (then vegies and fruit), you'll not be holding on to muscle!5 -
Diets tried. WW Atkins calorie counting in general which really involved food diary like we do here.
I do intend to incorporate the food groups in the future. And Exercise. And know that I’m not perfect and will fall off the wagon.0 -
First congratulations for deciding it was time to do something, anything to make a change. That is the first step of the journey. And do not kid yourself it is a journey. It is not a diet to lose weight because if you look at it through glasses that say it has a beginning and an end date, it will not really work. Says the wise woman who I bet at 59 has tried as many if not more bizarre diets/fads than you have. But what I have learned through all my yo-yoing is they really are false and do not work. Sure took a long time. And the number of times I tried WW is kind of comical. I do not remember the potato one, but I remember eating bananas for a week, followed by hot dogs for a week, and then eggs for a week. Foods to this day I hardly ever eat at all. Starchy vegetables in the long run is not good for anyones health. No matter what some celebrity states. I also have more than 100 lbs to lose. And in first month on here followed the lifestyle change my Dr. put me on and lost 18 pounds and yes I know that a good amount was water weight from week one. But I have committed to keep logging and eat veges, 1 fruit serving, fat, some protein every day. Yes to lose weight. But biggest reason is for my health and to get off so many medications and see if I can reverse my Type 2 Diabetes. So while trying to lose the weight which is great, please also consider your health and what the food you are eating is doing to your insides.4

I’m not worried about muscles. I’m worried about diabetes and heart disease. I don’t want a gastric bypass. So I’m doing a crazy fad diet. It’s just for a little while lol. I was hoping someone else on here had tried it. I guess not.8
