Cold rain gets boring. There’s a special kind of rain that penetrates your skin within seconds.
Glad you like our beer. I’m quite partial to it too, as to whisky, well, we can differ on that...
As to that ‘futbol’ thing, I can assure you I am more likely to discuss rugby, cricket or tennis (Wimbledon only) than before THAT dull sport!!!!0 -
1st run after admitting to being sick and it felt wonderful! It was in the low to mid-70's with about 75% humidity and dew point in the low 60s. I am not sure how to measure the dew point affect but I do know 75% humidity is pretty high for us and I was soaked and dripping.
While I was fine running (other than some stomach issues) when I got home and went to do my usually planks and stretching, discovered I couldn't because my head was going to explode. Now I am getting the runny nose too... Been a long time since I have had a cold/respiratory thing and I am guessing I am not quite over it yet - boo!

I believe it's Latin annoucers that make the sport more interesting for us. I also enjoy Tennis (yes, almost exclusively Wimbledon, Olympics is only every four years). I prefer Hockey, not too many Games in July though. I also said whiskey prices... 15yr Macallan runs about $70-80 here (standard bottle), cheaper If I drive 15 minutes south and go to Mexico - almost no liquor taxes!0 -

Thank you for this! This will be my first spring/summer running regularly and I've been struggling to figure out how to gage the weather ahead of time. It didn't occur to me to watch the dew point instead of relative humidity.
Congrats on your first race! Yay!!!
Dew point is key, but for summer running also pay attention to:
UV index - you will be out in the direct sun for a while - and UV does not care about clouds you can be burned very badly on an overcast day. Most sunscreens will fail in sweaty conditions so pay attention to that too. Get good eye protection from UV too if you can (some people can not run with sunglasses on). You only get one set of eyes, so take care of them.
Also remember that shirts have UV protection ratings too. Do not assume that you can not get burned while wearing a shirt. It can happen. Things that look opaque to our eyes are transparent to UV.
Running at different times during the day usually avoids the UV risk nicely. Check a site like Dark Sky that gives hourly UV ratings.
Clouds - Direct sun makes temps FEEL warmer than they are, clouds help reduce the FEEL of temps.
Temperature - This one is obvious Ideal running temperature is in the 55F ballpark for most people. The farther you get from that number, the harder your run.
Rain - A light rain is great, hail and lightning not so much. If you run trails remember that rain == mud. So be prepared for that.
Over time you will learn what conditions are bad/good for you specifically.
If you can afford it, buy the better "heat gear" style clothing. It helps A LOT but it is very very expensive in many places.
No dew point, rain or clouds here. We just have temperature. And sun. Lots of sun. I refer to it as the glowing ball of doom this time of year.
Stop your complaining, it is a "dry heat" - you know just like a convection oven.
Except we don't get freshly baked chocolate chip cookies when we open the front door. There's no reward like with the oven. HAH
In my neighborhood I have the Tasti factory (the clue is in the name - they package nuts, seeds and dried fruit but also make muesli bars, bliss balls and the like), so frequently on my runs the air is filled with the overwhelming smell of chocolate, and sometimes berries. It’s simply delicious. I can’t imagine what living right next door must be like.2 -

that's weird(to me) cause our forecasts focus on dewpoints, windchills, and "real" feels. they also talk about allergens and asthma0 -

I set out to do quick run before my circuit training workout, only to get a text from my trainer asking where I was just as I started my run. I guess I had the time off by an hour. Whoops! I really hate standing people up like that but on the other hand I was happy to have an unexpected extra day off to let my muscles rest. I still have a 7 am session tomorrow before my week of vacation.
So, I had a little more time to run than expected, but kept it fairly short and easy. The weather is quite nice here, so I can't complain about being a little sweaty for this run - when I'm seeing that when I get to Iowa later this week it will be in the upper 90s. Not looking forward to that.3 -
After a week of not doing it, I finally got some yoga done today. Hooray!

Workout notes:
Monday's are usually rest days (day after my LR), but my boyfriend and his friends were going to a nearby forest preserve so I played hooky and went with them. I live in Chicago and have no car, so the only way I can make it out to a trail is if I talk someone in to taking me. This was my first chance all year so I have no regrets I was planning to do the 8.1 mile loop, but I made a few wrong turns and ended up doing a 10 mile figure-8 (with some backtracking) instead. It was so wonderful! We had heavy rain the last two days so the trail was quite muddy in places, but I had a blast splashing through every puddle! We were just 30 minutes outside of the city, so the trail itself was pretty flat; my total elevation gain over the 10 miles was just under 600 ft, which sounds wimpy but is (no exaggeration) more elevation change than I usually get in a whole week running in the city! I definitely will be taking it easy tomorrow to let my body recover from two long (ish) and hard (ish) runs back to back! Now if only I can convince someone to drive me out there on a regular basis...

ETA: The trail system I went to is known for the 168 step stairwell that leads up to the top of the bluff. Since I ran the trail as a figure-8 by mistake instead of doing just the outer loop, I had to run up the steps twice. And wow it sucked19 -
So I got my Dam race photos and I'm a sucker for that kind of thing, so I got them. Anyway, some of you may recall that I had some BG challenges during that race.
Short story: At mile 5, BG was down to 38 mg/dl so I treated with dextrose and grabbed a powerade at the next aid station. At mile 6, BG was up to 49 mg/dl - this is still low, but moving the right direction. I treated with more dextrose. At mile 8, BG was still at 49 mg/dl so I took more dextrose. As I started running away from testing/stuffing glucose tablets in my mouth, this photo was taken. You sure can tell I've got something in my mouth.
BTW, I lost about 9 min. testing BG and treating + whatever time I lost because performance suffers when more than half of the race is run while hypoglycemic. This is part of why I'm so slow.

So I think @PastorVincent has something with his post about the dewpoint. We failed to get out before the midday heat, so decided to try running at sundown, since the trails close after dark. Heat was 96 and dewpoint was 75, and I can only describe it as purgatorial. That has to have been the hardest really slow 5k I've ever run - 35 minutes and by the time we finished my arm hair was standing on end from stress and I felt like I was going to throw up. If this stupid weather doesn't break, I'm gonna be forced to run on the treadmill.
On a more cheerful note, my bad leg feels great! Did legs day yesterday and not even tired today.
PS Not even the snakes are dumb enough to be outside in this weather, although I did see an unfortunate lizard that had been run over by a bicycle.

Starting fresh this month.
I had a great season of track, graduated from high school, had a big party, ate a lot of food, and didn't exercise for almost a month. It was fun, but now I really need to quit eating Oreos - lol (they are my weakness).
This month's focus is going to be on consistency - in regards to eating healthy, drinking water, and exercising. Going to keep a positive attitude when things get rough too! I had a 3 mile run the other day, and the goal is to do 47 more by the end of June. Excited to see where the month takes me!

My goal for the month is 60 miles.
I started summer run camp last week- we meet up every Tuesday and Thursday for speedwork/group runs.
Another goal for this month is my water intake and being consistent with that. It’s getting hotter here in FL and I know I’ll have to start getting up even earlier to go run.6 -
I was on vacation for most of June, so last night was the first time I actually logged a run. My company has offered its employees corporate membership at a local gym chain. It's the gym I was already a member of, but the corporate membership is cheaper than the dues I'm currently paying and I also get access to the 'elite' gyms in the chain. One of those is close to where I work, so I thought I'd go and check it out. I ran 5k on the treadmill (well to be honest, it was 5k split between three treadmills because I was trying them all out).
I decided to wear my Brooks, but spent some time adjusting the laces so they weren't as tight across my feet. It seems to have worked because I haven't had any pain. I still don't trust them for longer runs though and will probably buy a pair of Saucony's for anything over 10k.7 -

It was a little easier getting up today, but C25k w2d1 was a step up in difficulty for my friend. However, I think she's still just thrilled to be running. She's apparently been telling all of her friends, and then a bunch of them said, "oh, why didn't you tell me, I want to run too!" So she offers to meet them and do the same plan with them, and then it turns out that none of them have time after all. This week I'm debating how to figure it into my own training. My plan for the day was 8k, and I did 5 of that after I said goodbye to my friend. But technically I also did 14 minutes of running with her today that I didn't count. Ehh, I know, it probably doesn't matter.

My kids are out of school and I’ve been getting up early to run before it gets too hot. It’s actually been pretty pleasant!
Went to the library yesterday and they helped me figure out how to get audio books working on my phone again. Yeah!! I’ve been listening to Marathon Training Academy podcast which is great- lots of great info and interesting interviews. I highly recommended it!

It was a hot one this morning. 71 degrees humidity at 97% and dew point at 71. Ugh. But I'm happy to be back out there!!! I'm running a trail 5K on Saturday which I'm so not ready for ha ha they were looking for a sweeper, I was like HELLO I'll be last so I can do it!
Just looking online at the continued destruction in Hawaii, just hurts my heart to see it.
@BruinsGal_91 nice perk from your company. Ours offers gym memberships up to a certain dollar amount to the higher level people, you know the ones who can afford to BUY a membership themselves. Oh well we do have a gym onsite it’s not awesome but it works.
@midwsterner85 you are too hard on yourself! Super picture.
@rheddmobile I’m going to start using the word “purgatorial”. Sounds like that was exactly what your run was. I get caught in the run early and hit the cooler temps and higher dew point or run later when it’s hot as hell. Seems to be no middle ground in the summer in Alabama.
@kat_ontherun congrats on graduation. My 18 year old daughter runs too and graduated last month. Will you continue in college?

Per the dew point conversation, I checked this morning and it was 63 degrees - right in that “unpleasant for some” range. As it turns out, I found it noticeably damper than I’d prefer and my legs felt like they had bricks attached to them for the first mile, but I still managed a negative split and a PR for overall pace by a couple of seconds. The second mile felt pretty good so I took the 3 mile turn instead of heading home earlier, but my knee started being a pooper so I switched to walking the last half a mile. It might be getting time for new shoes - time to do some research!
