Workout notes:
I slept in super late yesterday (was out until 1 am with two of my lab partners and mayyybe had 1-2 too many moscow mules haha). Waited until the afternoon to get my easy run in, just 3 miles followed by 45 min on the spin bike. My legs were still feeling quite sore from Thursday night's 5K so I elected not to do any strength training. I woke up on the early side this morning to hopefully get most of my long run in before the rain got too bad. I made it ~8 miles before the storm started up, but at least the rain felt really nice and helped cool me off! I just really hate it when my running shoes get wet, but there's only so much you can do to avoid it Legs felt a little sore at the start of my run, but definitely felt better and better as I went on. 14 miles felt really long last week, but this time around it felt a lot easier and shorter so that's a good sign! I think adding in some pickups (10x1 min at 5-10K/4 min easy) helped pass the time and keep my form from deteriorating too much. Strength training is on the agenda for this evening, but if I'm being honest I'd say its 50/50 as to whether or not I'll actually do it.
Very excited because I'm going out to a nearby forest preserve tomorrow with my boyfriend and a few of his friends. I'll finally get to do some trail running!! Monday's are usually rest days for my, but the opportunity was too good to pass up. Only thing is that it is an 8-9 mile loop, so I hope my legs will recover quickly enough from my LR today to be up for it!
Thank you so much @Elise4270 @fitoverfortymom @5BeautifulDays @midwesterner85 @kgirlhart @Teresa502 @seanevan10 @lporter229 @Scott6255 @rheddmobile @katharmonic @shanaber @amymoreorless @PastorVincent @Orphia @marisap2010 and anyone else I may have missed!
@katharmonic Great race photo, you look so happy!
@polskagirl01 Beautiful flowers, you are very fortunate to have such a lovely place to run!
@Orphia WOW congratulations!!! So very inspirational. I love the finish photo with the balloons, and sounds like a great surprise to have some friends waiting at the finish
@BruinsGal_91 Love the photo! Puffins have always been one of my favorite birds after seeing them at the zoo as a kid. I begged my parents to let me get one as a pet (lol) so they bought me a stuffed animal puffin that I carried everywhere for about three years
Upcoming Races

Well done @Orphia - you are an inspiration to us all - ESPECIALLY doing it with limited cheering from the sidelines!!!1
-
Aw @BruinsGal_91 - puffins are just STUNNING birds! Great photo. I’m not jealous AT ALL!!!1

Being sick and not running I haven't checked in since Friday I think... I have no running updates to post but I am feeling a bit better and hope I can get a bit of a run in tomorrow morning. We'll see as the congestion seems to be the worst at night and 1st thing in the morning. On the other hand not running is about killing me and I just want to eat every carb available!
@polskagirl01 - love the poppy fields! I don't think they have the Remembrance significance here but they are the California state flower and are protected.
In the same way that @RespectTheKitty likes Fallout Boy, I like The War on Drugs and Kurt Vile and you will find them throughout my playlists.
@RunsOnEspresso - I have a cooling towel but have never tried using it for running. When I have used it at agility trials it worked 'ok' but didn't really remain cool for very long.
Also - that run in (almost) with a semi is SO scary! I can't believe the driver was paying so little attention to where you were! Makes me happy I only have to deal with dumb drivers in cars and pickup trucks as the semis aren't allowed on the roads I have to cross. Be safe my friend!
@orphia - WhooHoo!! Congratualtions on running 50k and your friends are amazing!
@daneejela - welcome! I also worked from home when I started running. It is a great way to break up the day, get away from the computer and just get outside! Whether you are walking, running or riding it is all good because you are moving! Also I love your profile picture
@noblsheep - watch out for that cat! I often have to help our neighbor with her cat and I have gotten pretty good at cooking the cat over to me and grabbing her feet from underneath before she can scratch me or get away. It also helps that the cat is fairly overweight and doesn't move too fast
@BruinsGal_91 - I love puffins! What an awesome picture!!5 -
@girlinahat @shanaber @ariceroni unfortunately I can't take credit for the photo. It's one of my husband's pictures (bird photography is a serious hobby for him). Taken at Bempton Cliffs near Bridlington in North Yorkshire if anyone fancies a visit.5
-
@BruinsGal_91 - well tell him we all love it! Awesome photography!

For all the new runners in the thread, as we head into summer do not forget to watch the DEW POINT before planning your runs. Dew point is a better predictor than relative humidity on how bad the weather is going to impact your run. Here is a handy chart:

I planned to run at least 4 miles today, but about 2 miles in, thunder and lighting started in the distance, so I re-routed home. Only 3.1 miles today.6 -
I ran my first race yesterday! Okay so it was a fun run at my husband's company retreat and mostly for the kids and only a couple dozen people showed up at 8 am on a Saturday (I would have slept in if he hadn't heroically kicked my butt out of bed) and I went pretty slow since the husband isn't up for running that far yet without walk breaks, but it was the first time I ran with other people and I got a medal, so there! There was one other couple without kids who I think finished first - she was a lot pregnant which made me feel good about the possibility of continuing to run while pregnant. I saw them this morning at breakfast also in running togs so apparently they are just badasses.
After the 3k (which according to my watch was more like a 2.5 k, but whatever) I actually looked at the trail map we'd been given and realized that I'd have to drive to get to any of the state trails, so instead I just ran around the resort a few times. It was a bit of a drag and I almost quit several times - I'm used to running on sidewalks or paved trails and I could tell I was tensing up a lot worrying about traffic. Still, I got my planned three miles in and when I was done realized that I'd gotten a PR for fastest overall pace and fastest mile, so that was nice. I'm going to need to do my research better the next time I'm planning on running out of town, though.

@MegaMooseEsq way to complete your first race! It still counts. Keep it up.
@PastorVincent thanks for the chart. That will be helpful moving forward this summer.0 -

Congrats on your first race! Yay!!!
Dew point is key, but for summer running also pay attention to:
UV index - you will be out in the direct sun for a while - and UV does not care about clouds you can be burned very badly on an overcast day. Most sunscreens will fail in sweaty conditions so pay attention to that too. Get good eye protection from UV too if you can (some people can not run with sunglasses on). You only get one set of eyes, so take care of them.
Also remember that shirts have UV protection ratings too. Do not assume that you can not get burned while wearing a shirt. It can happen. Things that look opaque to our eyes are transparent to UV.
Running at different times during the day usually avoids the UV risk nicely. Check a site like Dark Sky that gives hourly UV ratings.
Clouds - Direct sun makes temps FEEL warmer than they are, clouds help reduce the FEEL of temps.
Temperature - This one is obvious Ideal running temperature is in the 55F ballpark for most people. The farther you get from that number, the harder your run.
Rain - A light rain is great, hail and lightning not so much. If you run trails remember that rain == mud. So be prepared for that.
Over time you will learn what conditions are bad/good for you specifically.
If you can afford it, buy the better "heat gear" style clothing. It helps A LOT but it is very very expensive in many places.1 -
@PastorVincent thanks for the chart. That will be helpful moving forward this summer.
Everyone is different of course, but I have found it works very well. There is another version of the chart were you add dew point and tempature to generate compsite number that tries to get at the impact of tempature and dew point in one feel swoop. I do not find that as helpful because I can look at the temp and see its like 95F or something and not care about the dew point cause I know that run will really be hard for me.
Experiment and see what works best for you. Some people love running in 90+F degrees with high humdity. I think they are nuts, but what do I know?0 -
June goal: 75 miles
6/3: 6.5 miles
6/5: 4.3 miles
6/6: 4.5 miles
6/7: 5 miles
6/10: 7.2 miles
27.5/75 miles completed
I am going to have to get up earlier on Sundays. I didn't start until 8 am this morning and it was already hot. I had a good run though and got 7.2 miles in. I mostly ran around residential neighborhoods because they tend to have more shade.
2018 races:
5/19/18: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon - 2:43:59.7. - 2nd place AG
11/10/18: Wags & Whiskers 5K10 -
Yesterday morning ran the Bellin 10k Run with my husband. I had run the event last year, so knew what to expect. It was a lot cooler for the run this year vs. last year so the first few miles felt really good. My husband had tweaked his back earlier in the week and was having a tough time. He normally runs faster than me, but he stayed with me at the start for the first couple miles. There was a downhill at mile three that he flew ahead on and when I caught up I kept going thinking he was right behind me. There were 12k people registered and over 9k finishers, so big event and lots of people so after a little bit realized that he wasn’t with me. I thought about slowing and running with him, but I knew he’d feel better if I just ran my own race from that point on.
Everything felt good until some new asphalt on mile 4. It was a sunny stretch and that asphalt really let off the heat. Mile 5 offered some nice shade so was able to recover a little, but with the weaving and the last couple of weeks of lackluster training had to work to finish. I saw that I was within finishing in an hour, so pushed it in.
Last year results: 1:06:39 (10:44 avg pace)
This year: 59:55 (9:39 avg pace)
Very happy with how things turned out. It would have been better if my husband would have been able to run the race that he wanted, but he finished. Below is a picture of us right before the start.

I forgot a running shirt a few weeks back and just thought I'd suck it up and run in the 60/40 cotton Hanes XTemp shirt i had on from work. It was 94 that day. To my surprise i found this shirt to be as cool if not cooler than the under armour/Nike shirts.
It could have been just that day the heat index was down so I've run in them again. Sill seems like it is suited to run in. I dont sweat much, so others that really sweat may not be able to do any cotton, idk. But if i can find another package of these T's at Walmart, I'm getting them.
Tldr If you wanna save some some money. It might be worth the hanes xtemp packaged T's 4 shirts for $15ish.5 -

It was nice and cool this morning, overcast, not too humid, but it still felt hard. Dunno why. Might have been overdoing things just a bit with gym and training and cycling and stuff.
In better news, I have a vacation coming up starting Thursday. Looking forward to getting some trails in.
Upcoming races:

20181111 Shanghai Marathon (maybe)8 -

Thank you. I'll be traveling to London in July and that will be useful. I live in the desert on a mountain, so dew point is generally a non issue here. Now the 105° temp today, yeah, that isn't much fun.0 -
@jele30 congratulations, that's some good improvement over the past year!
@PastorVincent good advice and charts. I want to be able to run regardless of the weather (as much as possible - thunderstorms or something extreme are generally a no-go), but that means I have to pay attention and have a strategy for clothing/gear.
I got my water vest out and will be wearing it on training runs again, as I plan to wear it during the trail race at the end of the month. We're required to have a working cell phone, and I think a certain amount of water, so the vest seems appropriate. I got up early today and sweated like crazy on my 10k+ run, it wasn't hot but felt super humid. It finally started to rain just as I was getting home. I enjoyed the run though, and was able to process some frustration that was bugging me from yesterday.
Upcoming races:
6/30 Silesian Highland [trail] Half Marathon
7/16 CityTrail OnTour 5k5 -
@jele30 Wow! That is a huge improvement! Well done!0

Was gone for 9 days in Kansas City and ran every day.
Although one day it was lightning, so had to use the treadmill. Had a great time with my two running buddies - a lady from Houston and another from Fort Walton Beach, FL! This is the 3rd year we've run together every day of the AP Reading. None of us are used to hills so we struggled with it together. We all said if the others weren't there to meet us in the morning we might not get out of bed. But we did it again this year.
This morning I got back to the weights in my little home gym.
6/1 - strength training - w15-D
6/2 -3.2 miles treadmill
6/3 - 4.3 miles Kansas City
6/4- 5 miles + strength training - in hotel gym so couldn't follow all of plan.
6/5 - 5 miles
6/6 - 5 miles +strength training - in hotel gym ... so not that great
6/7 - 5 miles
6/8 - 5 miles
6/9 - travel/REST day
6/10 - 54 miles cycling
6/11 - strength training W16-D

7 slow, hot, humid miles this morning. It was 81F with dew point at 74F. That right at the brink of 'Extremely Oppressive' on @PastorVincent's handy chart. Felt pretty miserable, but ironically felt best starting around mile 6. Had a fast finish for the last two miles.
As I near 50 miles for the 11th of June, I suppose I should adjust my June Goal. Thought this would be a down month with the heat and achy calf/Achilles, but both have been manageable. So I will go ahead and revise back up to my normal 100 miles for June.

That's really interesting about the dew point, I've never looked at it before so now I definitely will.
I ran the HFM Maritime Half yesterday in Manitowoc, WI. It was a great event, very well organized and nice volunteers. The flat course was out and back along Lake Michigan so the view was awesome. It was 59F, 83% humidity and 5mph wind. It's a small race and I really liked that as we started I didn't feel stuck trying to get around other runners, there was plenty of room for everyone. I saw my husband a lot of times since he was able to drive to multiple areas and hop out of the car to cheer. I felt really good until about mile 11-12 and I slowed down a little. My left foot had started to hurt so I kept looking at my pace because I knew I was going to be close to my time goal and just kept trying to convince myself to go faster. I ran 2:15:18 which is over 25 minutes faster than my Green Bay Half time last year! I am thrilled that all my hard work is paying off.
June 3 - 5 mile Treadmill run & 3.5 Treadmill run later
June 4 - Burn Boot Camp
June 5 - 4 mile Treadmill run
June 6 - 3 mile run
June 8 - 2 mile Treadmill run
