Is there a "HM base" program somewhere and then kick it into gear closer to 6 weeks to the race?
I have been meaning to give you my thoughts on this. I try to stay in "half marathon shape" year round as well. For me this means being able to run a half marathon whenever the opportunity arises. As such, I don't really ever follow any kind of HM training plan. I try to keep my base mileage around 30-35 miles per week (this probably varies greatly from person to person). I have one day per week when I will do some sort of speed work to keep me honest and one longer run. My long run varies anywhere from 8-14 miles and really depends on where I am running, what I have going on that weekend and how many miles I ran the rest of the week. The other runs can be anything: tempo, slow and easy, trail, etc. It's very, very structured, as you can see. I also try to use this time to work on my strength training. All that said, I am usually marathon training 32 weeks of the year (for one in the spring and one in the fall). This is what I am doing the other 20 weeks.5 -
@5BeautifulDays YES! You did awesome! Not only did it not kill you, you'll totally go do it again soon!2

June 2018 Running
06/01: XT
06/02: 3.02 mile easy run, 8:51 pace + XT
06/03: 14.01 mile long run, 9:09 pace
06/04: 3.01 mile easy run, 9:19 pace + XT
06/05: 7.26 miles- 1.6 wu, 4x(1M@10K/90" rest), 1.6 cd
06/06: Off, rest day
06/07: 6.26 miles- 2 wu, 5K race (21:59), 1 cd
06/08: XT + core
Total: 33.56 miles
Well my 5K race last night was a huge success! It took me over two years, but I finally got a new 5K PR (by 6 whole seconds lol) and broke 22 minutes! It was such a wonderful race, I went out feeling strong and so confident that I was going to PR. I truly left it all on the course, as you can see in the finish line photos below (literally dry heaving and trying to hold the puke in). At least I crossed the finish line before losing my dinner. Official time was 21:59 for 3.17 miles. The 5K started only 2.5 minutes after the 8K, so I did a lot of weaving for the first half of the race (as you can see from the distance, I did not run great tangents). Ended up 3rd OA female finisher and 13th finisher (M and F). I'm so incredibly proud of myself!!!
5K death glare:
This might be my best race photo ever:
And this is definitely my worst race photo ever (dry heaving right at the finish line)
Second worst race photo ever (alternate title- "PR face")
Race bib and 3rd OA medal
Today was just 45 minutes of light biking to shake out my legs, followed by core and a ton of foam rolling. I feel surprisingly great today considering I thought I was going to die on the finish line last night
Upcoming Races
06/07: Strides for Peace 5K PR and 3rd OA - 21:59
06/24: Chicago 10K
07/22: Rock 'n' Roll Chicago 10K
10/07: Chicago Marathon28 -

That is a great guideline. Hubby and I are meeting with a powerlifting coach/trainer and I'd like to get more serious about lifting 3x per week and running 3x per week with at least the long run being on trail, if not one of the other runs (I can bake this in a lot easier during the summer and when my son is actively having soccer practices w/ his team because the practice field is right next to a series of great trails). That would put my mileage closer to 25 miles per week if I was consistently pulling long runs at 12 miles. Hmmm. I'll have to play with that a bit.

With eyes open - on one leg hop up to a step 8-12 inches high, landing on the same foot and balance there... step down and repeat. It is great for improving your stability.
We also do step ups to a single leg balance using a high step - about 3 ft for me. It is getting easier but was really difficult for me initially - the top of the step is past my hips. It is really a glute workout!
Ima hafta find a step. sounds like a good way to strengthen that buuuttttt!
Dh is insane. He said he wanted to sign up for a 5k this/next weekend. Knock it out, but im not ready. So he signs us up for a championship dualathon next month. Gah! I'm going to be last, last last of lasts. Farts. Come on!
What do i need to know? I dont have a tri bike. I dont have the typical attire or knowledge. I dont look the part.
They're all gonna be "who the xxx is this lame ssss person?" Not the iron Nun!
Its a rather manageable distance. 3k run, 22k bike, 3k run and hilly. But I am not ready for competition. Not not not not not...
Help!
I am not sure that I am ready for that either, but I would love to do this!!!
Ooooh, come do it! Come do it, come do it!!!! Hahaha!
Its Draper Lake duathlon if you decided to come up! @BEERRUNNER, DH and i met up hwre and did the POOP run last dec.
https://triokc.club/draper-du Norman OK

LOL, I'm more than happy to concede that contest! Ugh to the dry heaves though
@ariceroni - Fantastic job and those are fabulous photos (with the above exception although I think it's actually a cool photo). I'm super impressed. Congrats on your great time and AG place!
While we're on the topic, can I redeem myself with a better race photo from the Niagara Falls Women's HM - at least I look like I'm having fun in this one!

@ariceroni - Congratulations!! WOW! That is a fast 5k and I agree that the photos show that you left nothing out there! Fantastic placing 3rd female OA!! I do love the photo of you under the 'Solidarity Drive'!
@katharmonic - That is a super cute race photo!
I think it was Runner's World that just had an article about how to take better race photos... Don't look at the camera or at your watch it can make you break your form; Do speed up (then you don't look like you are shuffling or walking); Don't smile - not sure the rational on this one. There were others but I think these were the main ones.
@elise4270 - so cool that you are going to have @seanevan10 as a Duo buddy!3 -
I went out for a run today but wasn't really feeling it so was sure at least part of it would be a walk. I haven't run since Tuesday's awful tempo attempt and today was mostly all walk. When I tried to run everything hurt and my head neck and chest especially. I admitted defeat and that I am sick and running just isn't going to happen anymore this week. Glad I got out there though Hobbes the Vizsla was getting antsy as I was as well. My training plan had a 10k for this weekend. I am so glad I didn't sign up for anything! Hopefully this will be gone by Monday and the cough doesn't decide to hang on and on.

Run the World (Girls) by Beyonce. Or all things Beyonce.
Guns N Roses...anything from Appetite for Destruction.
Flo-rida. Low or My House.2 -
@ariceroni YAY! Well done!! Way to stick it out through the nausea!
@5BeautifulDays Dude! At that rate you will be in Marathon shape for the fall season! Well done!0 -

Probably because your face is more relaxed when not smiling and forcing a smile can look more like a grimace (at least for me). You probably get a more natural smile/expression if not thinking about it.1 -

I prefer audio books personally, but I am told that Spotify and some of the other streaming services have premade running playlists you might want to check out?1 -

These are good. I always like Eminem's lose it. Amazon has some fun playlists for runners. I like the 80s music for runners the best. But I am not good at this because I only listen to podcasts now.1 -
@katharmonic I think you come in a close second or third for best race photo in thread. @7lenny7 's jump shot I think still wins. Sorry0

@amymoreorless - There are quite a few good running playlists on Spotify. Runners World has a new one just about every month but I really like Shalane Flanagans (Run Elite I think it is called). My running playlist is really a mixed bag - I have some Florence and the Machine, The Black Keys, Phantogram, Muse, Depeche Mode, Arcade Fire, the xx, The War on Drugs and lots more. Lately I have been going back to Lady Gaga... If you want to find me (Shana Bereznay) on Spotify you can take a look...4
