June 2018 Running Challenge

Today was a scheduled no-run day. I took my 13 year old (who had the day off because of graduation at her secondary school) to get her toes done and a haircut and lunch. We normally do that sort of stuff for birthdays, but her birthday is in November and always seems to fall in the middle of a cheer competition, so we didn't get to it last year. We had a lovely day. My lovely day included new shoes for me, too-- I got a new pair of Mizuno Wave Inspires!
My plan is to run 4 miles tomorrow at the lake, although I'm seriously contemplating running the whole 5 if I can keep my pace slow enough. Then Saturday is off and Sunday is my 5K race. I'm super excited!

Suspended insulin pump around 3:30pm Was at a good number (i.e. not quite low, but too close for comfort to start running) by 4pm and I took 2 scoops of Ucan (40g net carbs with slow release) and kept pump in suspend. By 5:30, I was dropping (ugh, why?!) slightly. I know that the protein from chicken breast will spike me in 1-2 hrs. after eating if I don't take insulin (due to gluconeogenesis), so I ate 2 lbs. 4.4 oz. of chicken breast around 5:45pm and went running at 6pm. Pump still suspended, and I had 16g of dextrose while out running. Finished with a BG of 73, but it felt like a good run and I had energy most of it. So the Ucan or the chicken or something worked.
TL;DR - T1D sucks, BG management sucks, and it isn't fair.
LOVE! (like just isnt justice).1 -

Yesterday was a planned rest day (which I didn’t even realize coincided with Global Running Day until last night - boo!). Today, I worked late, and when I got home, hubby had dinner almost ready. After dinner settled, I did 1 mile just to get something done.4 -
@fitoverfortymom A little late to yourfitoverfortymom wrote: »Question: Now that I'm more or less in "HM shape" all of the time, what do I do between races that are three months apart?
The simplest Pyramid repeats - trying to maintain pace on 400m sections.
800m easy warm-up - run the corner easy, 400m @ 80%, run the corner easy, 400m 100%, Easy Corner, 800m 80%, EC, 800m 100%, EC, 1200m 100%, 400m Easy, 800m 100%, EC, 400m 100%, 800m easy cooldown or repeat the pyramid 100% effort runs ( no 80% runs ). Some of the speedier Road Runners will add in a 1600m.
@lporter229 Pictures never do viewpoints justice, Love the look of the bush trails.Dh is insane. He said he wanted to sign up for a 5k this/next weekend. Knock it out, but im not ready. So he signs us up for a championship dualathon next month. Gah! I'm going to be last, last last of lasts. Farts. Come on!
What do i need to know? I dont have a tri bike. I dont have the typical attire or knowledge. I don't look the part.
They're all gonna be "who the xxx is this lame ssss person?" Not the iron Nun!
Its a rather manageable distance. 3k run, 22k bike, 3k run and hilly. But I am not ready for competition. Not not not not not... Help!
@Elise4270 Well first off you still called him DH - so it can't be all bad.
Bike - it's such a short distance that a Tri/Road bike is not required. With out DH knowing have slick tires installed on your bike , and maybe soften the tire on his bike ( 15-20lbs air ) giving you just the smallest advantage. Me bad ???
In all seriousness we have a Fall Sprint Tri-athlon ( 750m Pool Swim, 20km bike, 5 km run ) and it is seen as an introductory event for newbs. Also an end of season for most of the local Triathletes. So we have people on mountain bikes, 3 speed cruisers, touring bikes with slicks ( my bike ), road bikes and a few tri-bikes. Staggered wave start on the pool swim means most weaker swimmers/bikers go out first then the jocks/jockettes last. This means that most people finish at about the same time even if you have a 1 hr head start = lots of people to cheer everyone in.And i need to buy some duathlon shorts i think... Or change?
@RespectTheKitty Well done on 3 spectacular miles.
Sudden heat wave here 30C = 90F - okay that's a nice day for Texas/Georgia etc, for us it's brutal I see a swim tonight not a run.4 -

*sigh* I wrote out a big response this morning and then hit DONE. I hate the app. LOL
I did the hop / balance test. Passed. Must still have some of those dancer muscle memories. I may have wobbled a bit on my right side but I balanced lol I wobble through my single leg deadlifts too
Made sure I did workout #2 from Strong Curves today! Getting my strength on this month.4 -
Have been struggling this week due to not sleeping well and working long hours and eating too much. 5 slow km yesterday, bagged it today due to heat. If I get to bed early enough I'll go out in the morning.9

LOL! Thanks for the humor @juliet3455 ! I'm sure I'll be fine. Just a bit of panic since a race/competition wasnt in my plans for another 5 months. Ya know, "dh" can be a bit subjective.

I got my 5 race pace miles in tonight and was fast AF. Not sure I'll be able to do that for a whole HM, but I held on until the last quarter mile at a much faster pace than I've ever gone before. We'll see, I suppose.

So I sadly haven't been on this discussion page since the first day. I had knee surgery a few years ago and my knee is starting to act up and swell again. This has set me back so I've only been walking and biking. I know that this is a running group, but I've logged 23.11 miles walking and 25 miles biking. I wish I could be running, but I'm trying my best with this set back!
BEST OF LUCK TO EVERYONE!!!!! feel free to add me for constant motivation I typically post a discussion question on my page every morning and some motivation!13 -

Zoom zoom! Heading to my spouse's company retreat this weekend. Last time we went was several years ago, where we did a lot of drinking with the youngsters and got into a really stupid misunderstanding-based fight. This time we've signed up for an 8 AM fun run on Saturday and I'm looking forward to checking out the trails around the lake and getting as much work done on my laptop as possible. I'm not mad about the free food and drink, but I'm not planning on going bonkers, either. The times, how they change.

@lporter229 - beautiful trail! I agree about the nature sounds - I rarely run with music because I prefer hearing all the critters.
@marisap2010 - I see you're doing the Wineglass - in Corning? I'm signed up for that one too - but just the 1/2.0 -
After a heavy legs day Weds, running 5k on pavement Thurs, and spending all Thurs night on my feet at a horse show, this morning my knee is cool to the touch, not puffy, and not painful! Hoping that this is a good omen for the future! I still have fluid in the Baker's cyst at the back of my knee but as long as that remains asymptomatic the Ortho says it's fine to run on.8

Did my sad little "hill" repeats this morning. Now waiting patiently for my coffee.5 -
Got out of my comfort zone and went for a "run" outside. I have no problem walking but running/jogging is not something I'm super comfortable with. However, I have decided to push myself and so I downloaded a couch to 5k app. Not only did I finish day 1 but I was feeling good so I added 4 cycles of running after the 8 in the app. I may regret it later but for now I'm feeling pretty good.
6/8 ran 12 minutes/ walked at a brisk pace 48 minutes for a total of 3.75 miles.
Total for the month 8.75/40. (Not sure why the tracker isn't updating. It updated on a previous post but not here

6/1-rest day
6/2-6 miles (hot and humid)
6/3-7 miles (mix of trail and paved)
6/4-rest day
6/5-7 miles total including 4X1000m speed work and strides
6/6-5.4 miles on trail
6/7-1 hour strength training
25.4/120 miles
I finally dragged my butt to the gym last night for the first time in ages. I did a runner's specific strength workout. It took me about an hour. It's a two day a week plan, so I think I can handle that. I was hoping to get a run in afterwards, but it never happened because of stuff. So today I will be running instead of having a rest day. It's hot and humid and I already wishing I had gotten up early and knocked it out.

6/1 = 4 miles
6/2 = 5.5 miles
6/3 = 10 miles
6/4 = 3 miles
6/5 = forced rest day (stupid work)
6/6 = 13 miles
6/7 = Vinyasa yoga class
6/8 = 12 miles
A fitful night sleep last night had me rolling out of bed at 7am. WAY to late to try and run 12 miles but I am crazy so I did it anyway. It was SO HOT and humid at the end. Someone actually stoped me at mile 11.5 and asked if I was okay - lol. I must have looked as miserable as I felt. I was barely shuffling that last mile. My running clothes are a biohazard right now. I would say they need to be burned but I don’t think they will ever be dry enough to burn ever again.
150 goal miles / 47.5 miles complete

People....I ran 5 miles!
(It almost killed me, but I did it)
Considering that at the beginning of May a single mile was painful, I think I'm doing ok
No run tomorrow, and Sunday is race day. I'm super excited!
(Yep, something is definitely wrong with the tickers...it's adding the miles but not updating when you post.)20 -

Sometimes (often) the tickers just take a bit of time to update here. Usually if you close and reopen or refresh the page it will show correctly.2

seanevan10 wrote: »So everyone trying @elise4270's one leg balance test... just to add another dimension of difficulty. With eyes open - on one leg hop up to a step 8-12 inches high, landing on the same foot and balance there... step down and repeat. It is great for improving your stability.
We also do step ups to a single leg balance using a high step - about 3 ft for me. It is getting easier but was really difficult for me initially - the top of the step is past my hips. It is really a glute workout!
Ima hafta find a step. sounds like a good way to strengthen that buuuttttt!
