Considering the keto diet. Help?

I've been on the weight loss Journey for almost 2 years. I was meal planning and trying to eat 6 times a day, trying to drink a gallon of water, trying to stay in the gym. My life had gotten very stressful due to so many regimens and cooking for myself cooking for my daughter_very hectic. I've been researching the keto diet and I've also been researching the keto diet with intermittent fasting. I eat low carbs now but I do have those days where I'm really want a piece of toast or bake potato or binge watch movies and eat popcorn or chips with my daughter on an occasion here and there. Just looking for other people that have gone from very clean eating however it was so stressful that they wanted a change and have gone to the keto. Any help or suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

Also wondering if there's anything on MyFitnessPal that tracks the keto diet or gives you any type of recipes or insight to it1

I'm not keto, but I do know that these two groups are a great place to start:

If you like toast and baked potatoes why again are you considering keto?19

I was a "clean eater" to the point of being orthorexic. Im not sure turning to keto would eliminate stress as it's got many restrictions in its own way.
I turned to a more flexible, moderate diet by changing my mindset about food and getting rid of negative food associations. I don't restrict foods (although there are things I eat less frequently, by choice, because I feel more physically satisfied with other foods) so make life and food work together...7 -
How about letting go of ALL those rules and regulations, and instead set your own boundaries according to your personal preferences and real life situation?
And yes, I too have tried to live by every rule in the diet book, and failed miserably too. Now I just eat and move like a normal weight person, and I'm effortlessly maintaining a normal weight.10 -

Definitely. These groups are great.
I've only lost more than a few pounds twice in my life: the first time was loosely following the Eat Clean Diet by Tosca Reno, where I ate lean protein and mainly whole foods but ate 5-6 times a day; and the second time has been with keto.
I only stayed with the clean diet for about 5-6 months, and once I reintroduced some baking, my appetite came back and I regained my weight.
I started keto about three years ago and have mostly stuck with it. I now know that carbs, mainly refined and highly processed, are triggers for me so I avoid them completely. As a result, my weight is much easier to manage.
Eating keto is not hard. When I make my family tacos, I skip rice, beans and the shell. When we have burgers I skip the bun. Last night we had meatloaf and I skipped the scalloped potatoes. I also skip that evening bowl of popcorn or chips. Sometimes I'll have a bowl of nuts or pork rinds if I want an evening treat, but more than a small handful of chips does not fit well in a very low carb diet. Of course you can go off plan for an evening. That is not a big deal unless you have a health condition being treated by low carbs or those carby foods are trigger foods.
Check out those groups. They have a lot of info in their stickies - the mods put a lot if work into it.7 -
Former bulimic-anorexic-orthorexic (maybe not former.. but not practicing those habits) here to weigh in. I’ve struggled with restrictive diets in the past. I have an auto-immune disease and so tried the Whole 30, and AIP with disastrous results (me binging from the stress).
However, I also put on weight after a knee surgery and needed to get it off because it’s making my AI disease too hard to keep under control. And I just don’t feel good about it.
So I decided to go keto. It’s been 2 months (started beginning of May). To be honest, it’s the most satisfied and satiated I’ve ever been on a ‘diet’. I’ve lost close to 20lbs. I’m sleeping better.i had some skin issues clear up. I get very few cravings I cannot fill via keto options and there is a ton of resources on the internet for getting started.
My only complaint is that I wish I had started sooner.
Feel free to PM me with questions. I’m happy to chat about it.

This is all you have to do.
I walk around at 180lbs with abs year round. Today I ate a half a pack of liqourice. Yesterday a bunch of doritos and beer. Tomorrow the rest of the liqourice. At the same time I'm taking in proteins, fruits, some veggies, dairy, and grains. Along with a 2-4L a day. And that's all unrestricted. I eat what I want when I want but in moderation. For a healthy mind set towards foods it is the best option out there.
The whole idea of torturing yourself to look sexy drives me mad.10 -
As @jessef593 stated, "healthy mind set towards food"! That resonates so VERY STRONGLY with me. I am all about mind set. So important.
I follow the Ketogenic Lifestyle. I would gladly PM with you if you like. Open door here! I mean that. I love to help people.2 -

There are vegan and vegetarian keto'ers. Some keto'ers choose to go with higher protein rather than very high fat,
As to the fruit, you will need to limit your intake but there is no need to go without. If you really want a lot of the tropical, higher sugar fruits in your diet, then keto may not be for you.

It'll happen every time you say anything other than "keto is the 100% bestest for everybody all the time under any circumstances and it's magical and cures all the diseases".6 -
Well Keto is not for everyone, anymore than just following CICO is for everyone. Yes I agree to lose weight we must be at a calorie deficit regardless of which lifestyle change is chosen. That must happen. Yet I think each person has to come to their own conclusion of what type of food eating style will work for them best. And there are many to choose from.2

I completely and totally agree with that statement.
It's interesting how the first thing people think about is the diet in its specifics, and this is not unique to keto, if someone is considering flexible dieting as a weight loss band aid my thoughts would be the same. The first and best question that should be asked is "what steps can I take to make dieting a more pleasant experience?" with the followup question every time you try out a new strategy "is this making dieting easier or am I imposing arbitrary rules?"2 -

I believe you are confusing CICO and calorie counting. CICO is energy balance so its for everyone.
Having said that, i agree with Jessie too. A healthy mindset is definitely needed regardless of the diet. If you are already stressed eating low carb, than lowering carbs probably isnt going to help. I know my ketogenic days are rough and i lool forward to my refeed days, but i am following a specific diet for leaner people to get leaner.... And its not a diet for a typical person.3 -
Original poster - it's not clear from your post whether you realize you don't NEED to do any of those stressful things in order to lose weight. Drinking water past the point where you have drunk enough water not to be dehydrated is of no benefit. Eating six times a day is only beneficial if you feel hungry six times a day. Staying in the gym is great, but so are: taking regular rest days, working out at home, and walking, running, cycling, playing tennis, or any other activity you enjoy enough to keep doing it. Clean eating means something different to everyone and has no benefits for weight loss. The only thing that matters for weight loss is eating fewer calories than you expend.
Keto is one way to achieve a caloric balance, but it's also possible to become obese while eating keto. And if keto is not appealing to you because you enjoy and are satiated by high carb foods, there is no reason to try it unless you have a medical condition such as diabetes or PCOS which is helped by it.
Try just eating a variety of food you like in portions within your calorie goal.1 -

Well...I get what you're saying, but technically, everybody "follows" CICO - whether or not they realize they are, or whether or not they even know what CICO actually is (which it's obvious in thread after thread that many people don't).
No matter what "diet"/"way of eating"/"lifestyle"/whatever they're doing, if there's no calorie deficit, there's no weight loss.3 -

Ahh I see. Everyone's entitled to their opinion as long as it matches theirs in every single aspect otherwise you're wrong and a heretic.
All I said was a healthy mind set with food Is the best approach. We had a guy taken to the hospital yesterday because he fainted on track due to how much he's been restricting his diet to stay skinny. Not lean but skinny. He's so scared to gain weight. Thats exactly what I was trying to combat with my statement. People can get hurt when they view food as the enemy.
It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it

Not sure who did that. I think that there is a way to see who made what comments but I do not spend enough time in here to remember.
I would make a very generic statement....there are A LOT of people who come in here with an agenda and HEAVEN HELP US ALL if we should disagree with their message. Most of those people...the ones with the agenda...are trying to sell something.
Then, there are a lot of very ignorant people. That is not a problem. We can do something about ignorance. We just have to be patient.
And then there are the people who heard something from "Aunt Sally" 15 years ago and that has stuck in their head as gospel. More of a challenge with this group.
I would not give two s**ts about the woos! Generally speaking, of course.2 -

I just started doing IIFYM (If it fits your macros) I love it so far! I've tried Keto too and it was too restrictive. I hated every moment and gained back what i lost. With IIFYM I can eat whatever I want as long as I hit my macros. You are forced to eat mostly whole foods that keep you full but I leave room for treats everyday. I got my macros for free on the website and put them in Fitness pal custom2
