I took a rest day yesterday since I was feeling pretty worn down from the last few days of higher mileage than I'm used to. Going to go out on another run during my lunch break today and after I get off work.

I sat down last night and planned my half marathon training. Given the half is 7 weeks out I will be starting on week 6 of the plan (next week) but the mileage is roughly equivalent to before I got sick so I think I'm good.
I would like to not die, haha.9 -

Another hot, slow, humid run. The weather wasn't nice, but overall I had a good 4 mile run today. I actually ran my last mile faster than my first mile. I played Zombies Run and evaded all the zombies. There was a mean sounding little dog that came snarling up at me but I evaded him too.

Question: anyone use headphones that sit on your face and not in the ear? I'm looking to go wireless but have such issues with earbuds staying in. I was looking at a brand called aftershockz. The reviews seem mostly positive (even comments on a runners world Facebook post).
I have a pair of these:
plantronics backbeat FIT
They are in-ear wireless headphones, but because they loop over the back of the ear they need to fit less snugly. I find I can easily hear traffic around me whilst wearing them. They can be a bit of a pain when wearing glasses though, as there is competition for space, but it's nothing too uncomfortable. The sound is good, and easy to adjust volume when needed.

Well I'm still standing after the weekend's running activities.
In terms of physical recovery - no, I have not yet run (maybe Sunday should be recorded as a recovery run?) and have a longed-for yoga class tonight. A colleague and I did a yoga pose on the concrete outside our workshop at lunchtime and I can tell there's going to be some painful stretching tonight!!
By the next day after the marathon, my feet felt fine, and I had no blisters. My toenails all survived unscathed. My hips hurt a fair bit.
Monday - quads felt it. Not too bad that I couldn't go downstairs, but I did have to gently lower myself with help from my hands when using the toilet. Feet hurting as if I had bent my feet on either side.
Tuesday - had a site meeting and climbed scaffold. quads still feeling it a bit but could sit down fine.
Wednesday - another site meeting, but what hurts now are my calf muscles, and my feet a bit.
The worst thing I am suffering from actually is dehydration. We are having a bit of a heatwave here, with nighttime temperatures around 17 C (62F) and daytime 27C (80F). This is nothing to a lot of you guys, but is a shock to us Brits. But I feel like my dehydration is a knock on effect from the weekend, and others have said the same. The last couple of days I have been chugging back the water and really feeling thirsty. It's better today so I think it's passing.
Next question is - what now? I am considering doing an actual PLAN for something. Wondering about a 10k training plan to get my speed up. That I can do easily whilst having my weekends back to do other stuff. Do Hal Higdon plans do speedwork at all?2 -
@alphahowls You continue to amaze and inspire me!!!!!1

@RunsOnEspresso I have a pair of wireless Afershockz and I love them. I got them for safety reasons. I can hear everything around me when I am running solo outside but the music is still clear. I bought a refurbished pair 6 months ago off Amazon and they are still working great.
Yah I only run with one ear bud to hear everything around me. Can other people hear what your listening to? I sometimes listen on the bus and hat when I can hear others stuff. Lol
@RunsOnEspresso The sound does bleed a little bit but that might be because I tend to listen to music way obscenely too loud. I have a conductive hearing loss from past ear surgeries and the bone conduction headphones help make the sound clearer.
I have seen an Aftershockz booth at a race expo in the past. If you have any races planned they might let you test them out there.0 -

@amymoreorless We need Heat Index and Dew Point to compare, though.
@midwesterner85 I don’t really want to look -LOL. I will talk myself out of my long run tomorrow if I keep checking the weather.
Not trying to compare. I was just complaining in general. Humidity always makes everything a million times more sucky. It starts feeling like you are running in Satan’s armpit when humidity levels go above 80%. I hope you get some relief from the heat and humidity soon.
I checked the forecast for Houston tomorrow - you should be slightly better than us in the evening, but not exactly ideal conditions. The difference is that I should have decent temps. early AM before sunrise while you are going to be worse off even during that time. Like I said, I'm not a morning person, but an effort to run early may be worthwhile. On the other hand, doesn't training in adverse weather provide a benefit when it comes to a race?! I mean comparing to runners who do not train in such weather...1 -

Nominal June mileage goal: 160 miles
Real goals: Stay healthy. Survive 4 races scheduled in June, 2 of them outside my comfort zone. Start training toward Wineglass.
Today's notes – It's become a pattern; I don't find time to update here after evening runs. So, yesterday's report first.
I went to club practice feeling pretty good, but undecided on what I was going to do about speed work. I have a 5 mile trail race on Saturday, that I don't have to run for a really good time. The FF training program kicks off with a 2 mile time trial on Thursday, and I traditionally go act the part of the rabbit for that time trial. With the group they get, I don't have to run it as a true time trial; but if they have some speedier folks, I might want to run it closer to 5K race pace than to T pace.
Because I didn't want to beat myself up much on Tuesday, I was ambivalent about doing more than the warmup. Compromised by turning left on the trail instead of right, guaranteeing a longer warmup than normal; it came in at 2.85 miles. Then Coach had a 5K workout on the board of 800 at T; 2 x 800 at I; 1000 at I; 800 at I, all with 3 minutes recovery. That's harder than I want to run. Dithered for a while, then set out with some ladies running their first 800 at I, and found their interval pace was a good fit for my T pace. Felt so good at 800 that I just ran 1600 at T, coming in at 6:30 for that interval. Then I ran 4 easy laps in lanes 3 and 4, and started a 5th lap to make the total over 5 miles for the day. One of the ladies passed me doing an interval, and I just pulled into lane 1 behind her and let her pace me for most of the last lap.
Felt really good, got some good stretches, came home, and felt aches in the Achilles that didn't rise to the level of "don't run" but that were more than I had before running. Get a good night's sleep, and they've faded. I could run today, but I still have some aggressive-for-recovering commitments on Thursday and Saturday.
So I made the executive decision to take today as an extra rest day, not because I have to but because I'm being conservative and want to be able to be more aggressive tomorrow while still remaining able to run a 5 mile trail race on Saturday.
It's all good.

@amymoreorless I have no races until October. And that one doesn't have an expo. I hope to get something well before my marathon (November) so I can get used to them. I will look to see if Best Buy or some other store carries them. I didn't see them at Target when I went through recently.1

Those are what I use also. They stay in place and are waterproof (submersible) which is a big deal for me. I normal burn through "sweatproof" headphones quickly, because they did not test that "proof" on someone like me These have held up over a year now, a huge leap over the all the others (even the much more expensive ones)1 -
@biketheworld - Thanks, I think Hobbes is pretty cute and he's a total goof! I cannot allow myself to read posts here in the morning any longer because I won't get out the door for my run until it it too hot or too late.
@mbaker566 - we are considering some of those same greens (very light ones) for our house
@AlphaHowls - incredible mileage!
@elise4270, @midwesterner85, @amymoreorless, @rheddmobile - I am not going to say ANYTHING about my weather nope not a word... even though I was complaining to my DH about how hot and humid it is here!
@RunsOnEspresso - I have Jaybird wireless headphones that come with multiple sizes of foam and rubber buds. I also have problems getting them to fit right and still be able to hear the ambient sounds. It took some trial and error but I did get them to work and I can still hear the birds on the trail. They were a bit pricy but I have had them for 2 years now of pretty much constant everyday use. I also had the plantronics ones previously but found I couldn't wear them with my sunglasses. With both on they dug into my head behind/above my ear and gave me a headache. the jaybirds have a flat wire that goes over the ear so it works better for me.
@kgirlhart - just pretend those snarly little dogs are zombies too - pretty sure zombies have invaded some of them!
@girlinahat - So glad you are recovering well! I know that there are Higdon plans that include speedwork for half marathons and 10k. I am doing the Intermediate II HM plan that includes tempo or intervals workouts each week.
Today I ran the intervals I should have run yesterday but took a rest day from running because of the late concert the night before. I left Hobbes at home because it was too warm for him and he just frustrates me when I run intervals. I have such a difficult time trying to figure out my actual pace since Strava just gives me an average overall on the app. I tried using MMR on my phone as much to determine distance as watch the pace (I didn't really believe the MMR pace was correct or that I was looking at the right number w/o my glasses). I was too fast on every single one and a few especially toward the end I had to stop before the end of the interval to get my HR down or catch my breath. Next time I will not push myself to go so fast - I just seem to have such a hard time 'feeling' what my pace is.

I should be happy with todays run bike run. But for some reason I'm disappointed. The bike route is a Bitc! One section, I kept trying to down shift to GG and the paddles wouldn't budge. Sh**! Look down, I'm ALREADY in GG. Whew! I feel like i accomplished something, yet unfulfilled. I knew i couldn't bike that route twice... Thats prob it.
A post op goal was to work up to running 5 minutes before middle of mext month, per docs orders, i ran 13:44 minutes, my first lap of 1.36 miles. See? I should be stoked. I'm not. Wtf brain? Now I'm off to eat the world.

Rest day yesterday spent at the local amusement park. My legs were sore this morning from all the walking (especially in the not so lazy river) but hubby kicked me out of bed with a, "It's your running day. No excuses. Get going!" So out I went and I'm glad I did. Once I got going things loosened up a bit and it actually felt good to run a bit. Did my week 3 day 3 of the C25K app. Ran 2.14 miles in just under 32 minutes.

@AlphaHowls Your mileage is ridiculous!!!
Nasty storm right now, so I am stuck inside. I wish I could run to work off some stress. I’ve had two staff submit resignations in the last two days, and one is only working through Friday. It puts my office in quite a predicament, as we have 450+ patients to see with only a handful of therapists. I just keep telling myself that it will work out!2 -
@shanaber Jaybird is another option I was looking at.
I currently use yurbuds for women with the smallest ear piece. I've had several pairs over the last several years but I'm so sick of the wire.0
