@amymoreorless We need Heat Index and Dew Point to compare, though.
@midwesterner85 I don’t really want to look -LOL. I will talk myself out of my long run tomorrow if I keep checking the weather.
Not trying to compare. I was just complaining in general. Humidity always makes everything a million times more sucky. It starts feeling like you are running in Satan’s armpit when humidity levels go above 80%. I hope you get some relief from the heat and humidity soon.
I checked the forecast for Houston tomorrow - you should be slightly better than us in the evening, but not exactly ideal conditions. The difference is that I should have decent temps. early AM before sunrise while you are going to be worse off even during that time. Like I said, I'm not a morning person, but an effort to run early may be worthwhile. On the other hand, doesn't training in adverse weather provide a benefit when it comes to a race?! I mean comparing to runners who do not train in such weather...
On the other hand, heat stroke is not good training for anything...3 -

Question: anyone use headphones that sit on your face and not in the ear? I'm looking to go wireless but have such issues with earbuds staying in. I was looking at a brand called aftershockz. The reviews seem mostly positive (even comments on a runners world Facebook post).
I have a pair of these:
plantronics backbeat FIT
They are in-ear wireless headphones, but because they loop over the back of the ear they need to fit less snugly. I find I can easily hear traffic around me whilst wearing them. They can be a bit of a pain when wearing glasses though, as there is competition for space, but it's nothing too uncomfortable. The sound is good, and easy to adjust volume when needed.
Those are what I use also. They stay in place and are waterproof (submersible) which is a big deal for me. I normal burn through "sweatproof" headphones quickly, because they did not test that "proof" on someone like me These have held up over a year now, a huge leap over the all the others (even the much more expensive ones)1 -
@biketheworld - Thanks, I think Hobbes is pretty cute and he's a total goof! I cannot allow myself to read posts here in the morning any longer because I won't get out the door for my run until it it too hot or too late.
@mbaker566 - we are considering some of those same greens (very light ones) for our house
@AlphaHowls - incredible mileage!
@elise4270, @midwesterner85, @amymoreorless, @rheddmobile - I am not going to say ANYTHING about my weather nope not a word... even though I was complaining to my DH about how hot and humid it is here!
@RunsOnEspresso - I have Jaybird wireless headphones that come with multiple sizes of foam and rubber buds. I also have problems getting them to fit right and still be able to hear the ambient sounds. It took some trial and error but I did get them to work and I can still hear the birds on the trail. They were a bit pricy but I have had them for 2 years now of pretty much constant everyday use. I also had the plantronics ones previously but found I couldn't wear them with my sunglasses. With both on they dug into my head behind/above my ear and gave me a headache. the jaybirds have a flat wire that goes over the ear so it works better for me.
@kgirlhart - just pretend those snarly little dogs are zombies too - pretty sure zombies have invaded some of them!
@girlinahat - So glad you are recovering well! I know that there are Higdon plans that include speedwork for half marathons and 10k. I am doing the Intermediate II HM plan that includes tempo or intervals workouts each week.
Today I ran the intervals I should have run yesterday but took a rest day from running because of the late concert the night before. I left Hobbes at home because it was too warm for him and he just frustrates me when I run intervals. I have such a difficult time trying to figure out my actual pace since Strava just gives me an average overall on the app. I tried using MMR on my phone as much to determine distance as watch the pace (I didn't really believe the MMR pace was correct or that I was looking at the right number w/o my glasses). I was too fast on every single one and a few especially toward the end I had to stop before the end of the interval to get my HR down or catch my breath. Next time I will not push myself to go so fast - I just seem to have such a hard time 'feeling' what my pace is.

@shanaber Feels like 103F (39.4C) here.
I should be happy with todays run bike run. But for some reason I'm disappointed. The bike route is a Bitc! One section, I kept trying to down shift to GG and the paddles wouldn't budge. Sh**! Look down, I'm ALREADY in GG. Whew! I feel like i accomplished something, yet unfulfilled. I knew i couldn't bike that route twice... Thats prob it.
A post op goal was to work up to running 5 minutes before middle of mext month, per docs orders, i ran 13:44 minutes, my first lap of 1.36 miles. See? I should be stoked. I'm not. Wtf brain? Now I'm off to eat the world.

Rest day yesterday spent at the local amusement park. My legs were sore this morning from all the walking (especially in the not so lazy river) but hubby kicked me out of bed with a, "It's your running day. No excuses. Get going!" So out I went and I'm glad I did. Once I got going things loosened up a bit and it actually felt good to run a bit. Did my week 3 day 3 of the C25K app. Ran 2.14 miles in just under 32 minutes.

@AlphaHowls Your mileage is ridiculous!!!
Nasty storm right now, so I am stuck inside. I wish I could run to work off some stress. I’ve had two staff submit resignations in the last two days, and one is only working through Friday. It puts my office in quite a predicament, as we have 450+ patients to see with only a handful of therapists. I just keep telling myself that it will work out!2 -
@shanaber Jaybird is another option I was looking at.
I currently use yurbuds for women with the smallest ear piece. I've had several pairs over the last several years but I'm so sick of the wire.0 -

Soaking wet group speedwork tonight. It was about 65 and rainy, but fortunately the rain was fairly light most of the time. Better than the downpour earlier in the day, and after I got home. It took us a bit to warm up but it didn't feel so bad once you were going. We did 4 min hard intervals x 6 with 2 minutes recovery between, 8 sprints, and warmup and cooldown. I felt like a drowned rat when we were done and I learned the shorts I was wearing are not ideal for wet weather - so soggy and sticky. I will absolutely be remembering this weather fondly though when it hits almost 100 degrees this weekend.
That brings me over my goal for the month, and makes it my 3rd highest mileage month since i started running (fall 2015). Might even get close to highest total, which is 126 miles.

Big run today to compensate for being away again this weekend and missing another long Sunday run. Unlikely to run tomorrow, and Saturday's a maybe, but I will take my gear with me just in case. Otherwise, that's me for the month. I'll aim for 150km again in July, and it should be doable simply because it's a five Sunday month!

Tonight was the first run outside in awhile. I liked it! I started over with C25K but I jogged faster than I have in the past and it felt great. And it was nice to run in the moonlight. Not so much the heat, but the sun was already down and it's about as good as I was going to get. Going to do that again Saturday as Friday night is boys' swimming lessons and local town is doing fireworks for the 4th super early! That will be fun.
In a couple of weeks, I start some swimming lessons to help with my triathlon again in October. I might do another in Aug depending on how the swimming goes.
I have tried to keep up and have read all the recent race reports! You guys rock!14 -

11 km Riverbank Trails into the Mann Flatts area.
Was a little late getting home from work so I thought I would be to late for the Wednesday night run club. Took off from home and headed into the far south end of town, met Moira and Cara in Mann Flatts as they were heading back. Circled around and caught up to them as they were stopped talking to Lorne Mann as he was out mowing the lawn in the Flatts. Forgot to thank him for all the work he does that benefits so many in the community.
Fast finish as a way of getting my legs/body used to cranking out some speed at the end of a run. Map my Run had my best pace at 4:48/km But I won't say how much distance I traveled at that pace
2 days of work left then 3 weeks vacation. But to be honest I am pretty much in Pre-vacation Friday Mode already.
Will spend the first week visiting friends and then head into the Northern BC Mountains and the Jasper/Banff parks for some Altitude Training/Mountain Trails all in preparation for what I consider to be my A Event for the year - Emperor's Challenge Mtn HM. Hadn't initially planned on 3 weeks but I had accumulated some vacation days from previous years and the management wanted me to clear them so took an extra week.9 -
@RunsOnEspresso My friend has an older model and I tried it out once. Thought they were pretty nice, you can hear everything outside and other people can't hear you at all. Did find them a bit heavy, but that was a few years ago and they're bound to have gotten lighter since then.
0626-5.3k, total-38.4k, goal-80k
Not going to hit my goal again. Ugh.
Went AWOL for a bit due to an injury. I think I pulled something in my lower back about 10 days ago, when I ran up some hills without much of a warmup. I finished the run but couldn't speed up at all. Saw my PT, did some exercises, and lay low for a while.
Today was the first time I tried again. I went about 2.5k downhill and then back up, trying to take it really easy (a bit hard to do going uphill). A bit of grumbling from back but nothing serious.
Tomorrow I'm scheduled to sweep a tiny local race (maybe 50 people registered). It's only a 10k and there are other sweepers so no biggie if I pull out, but based on today I think I'm going to KT tape it and hope for the best.
Upcoming races:
20181027 Mogan Ultra 30k
20181111 Shanghai Marathon (maybe)9 -

Well, neither magnesium nor the allergy required Benadryl seems to be doing this job this week, and I am back to terrible sleeping schedule/pattern. I don’t do well in the heat, and thus have talked myself out of running in it the past two days... I keep telling myself I will get up early and run, but when you are stupidly awake starting at one or two, If you are lucky enough to go back to sleep, getting up at 5 seems like a terrible idea.
However, today I decided to try some “negative” reinforcement that will be good for me one way or another regardless of how it works. So, when I was wide awake at 3:30 this morning, because my brain is dumb... I pulled my stuff together and went for a run. So now it is 5 am, I have ran and showered, if I chill quick enough, there is still time to take a nap before having to get ready for work. So, now it is up to my brain- if it keeps being dumb, we will keep having witching hour/predawn runs, and avoid the heat.... if the brain hates running as much as it says it does while I am doing it, maybe this will be the thing to convince it that we actually need our sleep. So, if I have the willpower- I will either be in shape, or well rested... I will take either...
2.1 today= 29.1 on the month.12 -
Got up early to run before it got hot. 9.97 miles
11 -
@hanlonsk I keep thinking about doing the same when my brain makes me fully alert at 4am. Although I doubt I'd be able to nap before having to get up and get to work.
What I learnt recently about sleep was this:
1. You WILL sleep eventually. You cannot exist without sleeping.
2. No point worrying about getting to sleep, because the worrying will keep you awake and because point 1.
3. If you want to get a habit of falling asleep earlier, then restrict sleep by going to bed later. So if you want to get up normally at 6am, allow yourself only a 4 1/2 hour window to sleep in. Set the alarm for 6am, but MAKE YOURSELF STAY AWAKE until 1.30am. Do this for a week. Your brain will get more and more tired, and realise that is has to maximise available sleep time, so it had better damn fall asleep straight away at 1.30am. Gradually start going to bed earlier.
4. get up every day at the same time.

No run yesterday, spent the time on the phone with my agent about the house we are trying to by. Got the inspection report back and it is NOT A DEATH TRAP! (unlike the last two, and I wish I was exaggerating).
We are working on our list of "required" fixes to move in, which will be basically the things our bank will require before issuing a mortgage. Things like GFCI outlets in the kitchen and fire door on the garage. They are seen as "safety" issues and are hard requirements. I would move in without them and do the work myself, but can not do that if the bank will not release the funds so have to request the seller does them. So we will see.15 -
Day 10 of no air conditioning... (thankfully, we were gone for a fair chunk of it, and until today the weather has been tolerable). It is so hot in my house that I can't even face getting hotter and sweatier than I am now. The replacement system is coming tomorrow, thank goodness.
I ran 2 miles yesterday. I may try to go to the gym this afternoon for an AC break and do a few miles on the treadmill.

Won’t make my days run goal because I took a week off for a leadership academy but I’ll be damned if I don’t make my mileage goal. I’ll run again tonight so I can get ahead of it by Saturday.

@amymoreorless Maybe I'm not the best example, as I'm not a marathoner, or the speediest or most consistent runner, but I've been "officially" ova-lacto for about 7 years, then played around with veganism for a few years before going fully plant based earlier this year.
Worked with a nutritionist who had me on a high protein (97-110g/day), low carb (110g work out days/60g non-work out days!) plan. I wasn't happy, hungry, never satisfied. I was "sneaking" in cheese (WI born & raised!) & other food so I was gaining weight. After doing my own research, decided to give the HCLF way a try, and whaddya know, it seems to work for me! I try to aim as close to the 80/10/10 as poss, knowing that I'm human & life happens. But I have been losing & energy levels are up. There is (are?) plenty of other vegan athlete resources: Rich Roll, Scott Jurek, Fiona Oakes, "Meat Free Athlete", one of the Williams sisters is veeg, Charlie Jabaley, to name a few.
Good luck to you!!2 -
@PastorVincent Hope it goes well on the negotiations and house purchase.
For me it seems strange that those items weren't done during construction - since they are mandatory in Canadian Building/Electrical codes and have been for quite a while - 15/20 years at least and quite a few insurance companies now insist on proof of them.
With attached garages I always install Fire/CO detectors that are linked to the ones in the living area so if some thing happens in the garage it then sets off the ones in the house. I have friends in the local fire departments and every year they have a garage fire or a car with a faulty remote start that fills the garage and house with CO that causes fatalities in the house. The fire fighters say it's really hard mentally to go into a house and find a family in their beds with not a mark on them and no smoke in the house and they know that if there had been working detectors they would have been alerted and got out of the house and called the FD.
Did the house have GFI's in the bathrooms and Laundry area? In my house any place there was a chance of water and electrical interacting I pulled the old plugs and installed GFI's, including all the exterior outlets. It's such a cheap safety feature since you only need a GFI on the first outlet in a circuit and it will then protect all the outlets feeding through it. The one's in the bathroom I found a GFI that had a built in LED Night lite that is a great feature.1 -

The house was built in 1960, before these things were standard. So if the house was built like yesterday, current codes would require it, but there are no "go retrofit your house" laws.
There are no GFCIs anywhere in the house which is not surprising given the age. Whenever I put new plugs in, I only use GFCIs. It is overkill, but the cost is not that much different and it adds a level of protection.
There are smoke detectors, not sure about carbon monoxide ones.
The garage is very unlikely to have a car in it. It will be more of an attached shed.1
