What's your golden rule that you try not to break?

I have a minimum amount of water I need to drink a day (or my joints get achy), treats must taste "worth" the calories or it's a waste, and the only calories worth drinking involve booze.4

Mine is “don’t demonize a food group” Aside from an allergy of course. Carbs, fats, sugars...every macro has a place in my daily diet and I don’t avoid one more than the other!9
-
I also use the apple trick! But mine is carrots. "Would you eat carrots right now? No? You're not really hungry."
Also the 80/20 rule - 80% food for fuel 20% food to enjoy. "Everything in moderation, even moderation" finally makes sense to me now!
Eat well. Be kind. Move more.6 -
Don't give into temptation and eat, sweets, candy. Crisps, pop, soda through the week.. Save it for the weekend..2
-
Focus on what matters, ignore the rest.1

Mine is to always over estimate rather than under estimate my calories. I have a pretty good idea of calories in most foods and if I don't know for sure I'll usually just assume it's at the higher end of my estimate rather than the lower end.4

Be nice and don't take other people's stuff (kindergarten ethics).2

I did this while cutting, I go the other way now that I'm bulking again!2 -

Don’t go to “group meet ups”3

This thread appears to be drifting beyond food/diet rules, in which case I'd like to change my answer to never get involved in a land war in Asia24

Food is fuel not your enemy. Excercise is to improve your physical fitness....not an act of self-flagellation designed to punish wrong-doing. You want to be healthy? Make your health a priority, allot some time to meal plan and exercise with a goal in mind. Recognize that if you prioritize health it will require you to deprioritize something else in your life and be okay with that. Set some milestones and be honest but not judgemental about your progress.11

Never touch a tissue that's rolled up in a ball.12

Its old, but I've always lived by it...
"Eat to live, don't live to eat"..

My one and hard fast golden rule is, “Never, ever wear leggings/stretchy pants as daily wear* again.” I’ve stuck to that for going on nine years. Those things are the debil and give a false sense of security because “it can’t be that bad, my pants still fit.”
*Not talking gym clothes. I do wear those, to the gym and back, never as casual wear.8 -
The biggest rule I've ever lived by was, if I can't do it myself than I probably don't need it. This is towards food. It took me to the point where I had dairy goats and made my own butter, cheese, yogurt and ice cream, not to mention garden, livestock, poultry and mini brewery. I was thinner and stronger back then. I let it lax in the last couple of years but I'm working back to it.7

I don't eat processed foods or add sodium to my meals. I also don't play the victim, weight gain and loss is really pretty basic. Whining. acting confused as if being overweight is incurable is just a mechanism to put off doing the work it takes to lose the weight.6

1. Never take laxatives and sleeping pills together.
2. Food is not evil.
3. You're never too old to have fun.

I'd probably die, as I am the only person I know with such a black thumb that I can't grow weeds.3 -
Be honest with myself and what I am eating. I find I tend to stop logging when I have not been following my healthy eating plan, eating too big portions. (I also do this weird thing with myself. I remind myself this is not my last supper and at some time in the future, I will eat what I love, but just not today). In life, I try to be kind and give other people the benefit of the doubt.2

Focus on what I can influence or control to help achieve my goals, not on stuff I can't change. Strive to balance current Ann's hedonic impulses with future Ann's health needs, because both of me are important. And have fun.2

My golden rule is just to not make any changes that I’m not willing to live with forever. That means not going super aggressive and burning out, no fad diets, no demonizing foods, no crazy exercise routines that I loathe... it is actually working for me because it has made the process simple and even fun.6

Stay within my calorie goal for the week. If I'm going to go over my goal for the day, I log the extra for the next day and force myself to stay under goal for that day.
General rule for life: Choose kindness

This is a rule I need to enforce on myself!1 -
A friend always used to ask herself, do I need this or do I want this? She always swore by it. I do like the apple theory in the OP- going to try it!2
