            The matching socks have legs?0

Toy Story isn't realistic. Socks story, however, definitely is. I'm sure they decide to just get up and leave once they've had enough...1

It's technically possible for the washing machine to eat socks. For front loaders, it might get lodged just underneath the rubber water seal; for top loaders, the sock could sneak into the crevice between the inner and outer drums as a result of overloading the appliance, then get snagged in the water drain or pump. It’s also possible for socks to get stuck underneath a top-loader’s agitator.4

Check the filter at the bottom of your washer, you will most likely find a few socks there and most likely it needs a good cleaning.
Alternatively you can blame it on the house elves, they keep escaping.0

you will be a rich man if you figure this one out.2

Adding, it would have taken losing a sock 3 times, maybe only twice before I went looking for a reason why I couldn't keep up with the matching sock.0

So there are 26 socks jammed into the crevices of my Dryer!?. .0

*washer. And yes, possibly. Or in the pump.0

I am convinced that a vortex forms between two dryers that are running at the exact same time, temperature, and rotational velocity. . This vortex is just the right size for socks to exchange between the dryers. .I am not kidding, because I don't even recognize half of those.0

You're taking all the fun out of this with your. . your "science". .0

Generally in my house it happens because one got tossed for having a hole...I just match them up with whatever is similar in size/shape and call it good.
Once upon a time the dog would get his teeth on a sock, but he's older now, so that's not been an issue in a while.
Really organized people pin them together with diaper pins so they don't get separated in the laundry, but I'm way too lazy for that.0

Losing that many socks is serious business. You have a serial killer on your hands.0

my family believes when socks are removed they should be tossed aside with reckless abandon. So I will find lone socks all around the house
I have seen socks get caught in the dryer so I am going with the dryer eats them. If they fall down the side of my washer I get an error and I have to take the water apart....perhaps I do this fairly often but only find shirts1

maybe not a serial killer...maybe just a very "active" teenage boy...0

 People really do this?
If I had a serious problem losing socks I might just place them in a mesh laundry bag.2

I can buy all of these theories to explain a few missing socks. . But, come on!. There's something more insidious at work here. .0

 1 dryer eats them
2 They don't make it paired into the laundry basket, and end up getting washed in different loads
I know for sure #2 is true because I have a bag with missing sock pairs. Every so often I go through and can match a lot of them up.

Ahh. But see...before i did this, i scoured the house. Looked behind and under the washer and dryer. Under the furnature, behind the piano. Everywhere! I then cleaned out my truck and washed every scrap of laundry...This wasnt just a surprising observation. It was a mission and a science experiment where i meticulously controlled every reasonable static variable.0
