Mission almost accomplished in the garage. What a shocking amount of super old and unwanted/unnecessary and quite frankly dirty (super dusty and literal dirt/dirty) "STUFF" around that garage. Wow. decluttering rocks...it's so NICE and NEAT and CLEAN now. I just need to mop and it's done!9

Practice makes better--it may take much more time (then you want it to=NOW or at least tomorrow, no later), but with a big ole dose of these "ingredients" listed above beautiful things happen. REMEMBER, "hurry" is an enemy. Let's continue to take our time and do it RIGHT, in the decluttering and getting slimmer and trimmer dept. too!

When you let go of the resentment you had towards exercise and eating right, I've found you can let go of petty resentment towards other people.
When you look after yourself, you have more compassion for others and can communicate better and can inspire them to let things go.4 -

I can definitely identify with your post. Being a clutter-bug has been a lifelong struggle, same as my weight. Don't have any tips yet, but I hope to be going through my clothes closet after a few more pounds. Struggling to decide if I should get rid of the too-big clothes. Hard to let go of anything. Ya never know when ya might need it
All the 'experts' seem to agree, that getting rid of our old clothes is the way to go on our weight-loss journey. I have been doing it this time around and I have found that to me, it is a way of accepting the new and improved me. I say get rid of those clothes that are now too big on you! Congratulations on both the decluttering and the weight-loss!

The wiring has been cleared by an electrician, insurance is finished and the dead stove is finally gone! I am about to attack the floor and wall where it was. I am horrible at housework! ( I knew that). I'm going to have to set reminders to move big appliances!5

Hey gang!
Good news: My husband is constantly telling me everyday, several times a day how slim and good I'm looking. I like that!
Bad news (which is actually good news, because behind EVERY bit of bad news, one can CHOOSE to see the error in one's ways, the point of the other party, count one's blessings that it could have been worse) and best of all...bad news NOW tends to PUSH me to change for the better, in one way or another. So, it's ALL good, as "they" say. Anyway, the bad news is I found myself thinking negative and feeling kinda "evil" this morning. I was feeling kinda "cornered" about a decision I have to make regarding something kinda important. As I was contemplating bowing down to/"allowing"/going along with these " angry/yucky thoughts", I suddenly thought about/remembered "decluttering" of all things. I said to myself: NO, to my thoughts. I don't HAVE to allow/worship/serve you (my thoughts) to neither influence me NOR control me. I'm in charge of what I allow in my mind, just like I allow what goes into my mouth, period. Thoughts (especially negative thought) are/can be powerful things that I used to allow to roam/rent FREE space/take over around in my head/mind/spirit and "entertain". NOPE thoughts, you may NOT "entertain me" with yuck, permission DENIED and absolutely NOT. Thoughts are a HUGE area we can neglect "decluttering" -- negative/nasty/counter-productive thoughts are easily embraced and given "place" to. We don't have to give place to wicked thought, we can take control and replace them with good and godly thought--at our will/command, period. At least I can!
So, what I did was "decluttered my thoughts". I purposely started thinking about ALL the multitudes of "good & positive things going on in and around me--started thinking about things I'm thankful & grateful for and how to approach this situation in cool, calm, humble manner and BAM--instant "relief" from messy thinking. Then, just to show my mind/body whose boss...I went for a nice long walk. The beautiful trees. flowers, children playing, fresh lovely air helped me to declutter my mind and even better to get my "joy" back on. I purposely walked very slow and "focused". How lovely and refreshing walking is AND I think I'm going to begin daily walking again (not just to the store and back--but as a form of extra NEAT "exercise" for me). Again, I'm NOT going to walk fast or to even try to elevate my heart-rate nor any of that, just "strolling" about and taking in all the beauty around me.
MAKING myself control my thoughts (until they become natural/2nd nature--and when they start wandering into YUCKLAND, handled them with wisdom, POWER and righteous thinking instead) PURPOSELY "entertaining" thinking about whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. BOOM!!13 -

You're "motto" is going to become one of my "motto's" now, because I never heard nor considered " "Challenge your thoughts. Don't believe everything you think." before. Just a friendly PSA from a nonprofit professional, please call or check the nonprofit’s website before showing up with stuff to donate. Sometimes the nonprofit can’t accept certain items for legal reasons (food banks usually can’t take personal care items because of weird fda rules, health clinics cannot accept leftover medications or samples under any circumstances) or because of space issues, or the item just isn’t related to their mission. But, we usually do know who will use it if we won’t and will refer you to that other nonprofit! Many nonprofits rely on donations so make sure your stuff is going where it will make an impact!9 -

Thanks so much for posting this O...I didn't see it! I LOVE these ideas, especially a 20 minute (or so) walk AFTER dinner (the old folk use to call this an evening "constitution"). I super love that--so doing this. Also, the planks, push-ups and stuff to do while dinner is being prepared/waiting for it to get done is such a terrific idea, but I'm going to start blasting some moving and grooving jams and DANCING (like no one is watching) while cooking/waiting for dinner instead. I hadn't thought of that until you posted this link--I do dance while ironing/sweeping/dusting and household chores sometime, but I'm going to start dancing while COOKING (who'd thunk it) on the regular, so thanks again!5 -
Last night I realized that I have to store the laundry basket on the dryer because the new washer's lid is kind of domed. So today I started going through the cupboard over the washer, making room for the laundry soap. So, as bad as the lightning strike was, it led me to cupboards that I really don't even open. They definitely need to be gone through...all of them. In the meantime I have a place to put the soap and more storage space is about to open up.
I'm so excited to make room for things we actually use!10 -
Oh man, decluttering is one of my favorite pastimes (no really - there is no sarcasm there!), so I am so excited to have stumbled upon this thread.
I have found for myself that when I start gaining some control or agency over one part of my life (finances, weight, space, etc.), it tends to translate and spill over into other parts of my life. It's like this energy snowball that builds and lets you power into lots of things.
So after some very wishy-washy behavior with regards to MFP, I am happy to say I have logged in for 31 days in a row which has led to very modest weight loss, but more importantly:- More awareness of how I am spending my money on food/things that are not serving me
- An increased vigilance about my career and how to improve it
- Renewed interest in making my home a safe, comfortable place to unwind and recharge
- More awareness of how I am treating my family and friends
- More awareness of how I spend my time
So while it's somewhat overwhelming, I am finding that getting my mind right about eating and exercising is forcing me to have a mind shift toward doing more positive things in every aspect of my life. I am trying to make my monkey mind focus on only a couple things at a time, though.13 -

I love all the tips and responses...it'll take me a bit to get through them all!
I will say that for me, letting go of a toxic person was a very difficult yet good decision for me. This person has a lot of negativity, was not supportive when things got really tough (I'm tough, but this person pushed me to a near nervous breakdown at a very critical time), and was not going in the same direction as me in life overall. Mind you - I've known this person over 40 years! I gently pushed back, letting go by lessening communication and eased out of their life. Yes, the person knows why. I wish them well and every success life has to offer. I honestly feel that we just grew apart as our lives changed.
Getting rid of clothes that are too big has helped me stay within certain weight boundaries. I refuse to buy bigger clothes (too cheap!) and it keeps me from getting too far out of whack.
Decluttering the house has been a process. I have gotten rid of a lot but still have a ways to go, especially in craft and sewing supplies. We all know it can be an investment! But it is a burden knowing that stuff is there waiting for me to do something with it. So every 6 months or so I check it over and get rid of a little more. It's whittling down! Since our ultimate goal in 10 years or so is to live in an RV and travel the country, I need to scale down.
We lived in our 36' RV for the greater part of a year and a half while living and working in two cities 100 miles apart. I will say, it is nice to NOT have so much stuff to clean and care for! We meet couples all the time at RV resorts who say living in their RV has been a liberating experience for that reason - less stuff, less stress.
I'm beginning to "get" the tiny house movement.
I can see how decluttering applies to weight loss...it seems when I'm better organized and have my *kitten* together (LOL!) that my weight loss/fitness goals are more successful.
Overall, I see that it's a lifestyle change. The yoyo dieting has not been good for my body and I'm at an age that I need to preserve what's left the best I can.

And when there is all there is to learn from each other, it’s time to move on. You learned how to break free of a toxic person. That must be liberating.3

Just a quick share on what I've been "chewing" on today and that's the dastardly "DISCOURAGEMENT". Is discouragement real? Well, if you "choose" to give "it" life and place to it, yeah--but it aint necessarily so, we don't have to give discouragement one ounce of life, at all. IF, from this day forth--we see discouragement for what it REALLY is, we'll count it and look at discourage as an unadulterated ENEMY, designed to frankly, destroy us and hinder our goals and new way of living, thinking. L@@K at the very word, DISCOURAGEMENT. Dis=LACK Courage=bravery and I mean business (with your mind, body and soul and environment) in accomplishing some huge task or goal. Let face it, in order to battle and win the battle of the bulge and ugly unmanageable clutter and mess, in order to LET IT GO (toxic folk, excess weight and yadayadayada), we MUST have courage...we MUST!!!! Discouragement steals, kills and destroys courage, period. See discouragement for the "criminal" and pest it truly is.
How? How can we kick discouragements out of our lives/minds and spirits?
1.) Recognize it for the true enemy of our minds/bodies/souls, it TRULY is period. REJECT discouragement for the loser and THIEF it is, take responsibility for whatever mess has or is happened/happening--REFUSE to play the blame game. Forgive y/ourselves and others, then viciously attack discouragement with REALITY. Example: feeling "blue" because you're not accomplishing your goals as fast as you'd like? Kick those "feelings/thoughts" in the throat, by CONSTANTLY reminding yourself it took you sometime to get in the position you're in, and it's going to take TIME and PATIENCE to get the clutter, weight (fill in the blank) in check, period.
2.) Remember, REMEMBER "hurry" is an subtle yet destructive enemy too. "Slow and STEADY surely does win the race"--it really does. DO NOT (NO LONGER) allow yourself to become anxious for ANYTHING, instead embrace the "process" and embrace it with sheer fearlessness and JOY (enthusiasm) MAKE yourself remember and constantly be "meditating" on how much you have to be thankful and grateful for. MILLIONS of people would trade places with you in an instant. It's NEVER hopeless, ever--just takes wisdom, humility and patience to WAIT for the results, period. Don't have wisdom, humility nor patience? WAIT FOR IT with HOPE and enthusiasm and courage and BAM, it will come sooner or later, I promise!
3.) NOTHING destroys discouragement faster than sheer unadulterated enthusiasm, period. MAKING yourself enthusiastic about your goals and life brings the ultimate weapon against discouragement and that's smiling. Smiling is also a NEAT exercise that may help the muscles in your face and neck become more stronger. I don't necessarily know if that's true, but try it...you may love it! Smiling more does something on the inside of us that makes us stronger, more courageous and more attractive. Don't buy the lie that you don't like to smile...again, make DAILY exercise of purposely/conscientiously smiling more and WATCH WHAT HAPPENS IN/THRU AND TO YOU--WATCH!
4.) Turn discouraging "thoughts" around IMMEDIATELY, as soon as they rear their foul and often lying/blowing things outta proportion/negative/fanciful heads up in your mind. Example: I'll never be able to (fill in the blank). Immediately say to yourself (or outloud, who cares) the EXACT opposite: "I'm doing it, it maybe a tiny bit, but I'm making it and will make it. I'll take my time and do it right and righteously. Today is a new day and if I don't accomplish my goal for today, there's always tomorrow. Stuff like that.
5.) Lastly STOP giving yourself over the negative things. GUARD y/our eyes, ears and mind from people, places and things that are a bummer. Even if that means turning off your favorite show or no longer listening to that jam of yours that makes you sad/mad or feel bad everytime you hear it or play it. Replace those things with uplifting, encouraging and delightful things to give your eyes, ears, mind over to and watch what happens in/thru/to you!

BOOM!!!! Love this so much. Come-on, how fabulous is RV living and traveling across the country...and doing it as clutter-free as can be, I'll answer that, TOTALLY FABULOUS. This is a dream of hubby and mines too. I'm utterly thrilled and inspired by your letting go of a 40 year relationship that was "eating you alive" via stress and ugh and yuck--what a courageous winner you truly are...reminds me of this:

I love that - an "energy snowball"!
I was describing how, after one day of being alcohol-free, the happy hormones kick in, and make subsequent days easier and easier... sort of the same thing!
And "trying to make my monkey mind focus on only a couple things at a time" - yes, that's how the magic happens!
A little effort, done daily, adds up to wonderful improvements - in weight loss, exercise, decluttering, learning...

It makes me feel more beautiful inside and out, which in turns is helping me even more in the area of letting GO of fear and excess negative thinking and being (as walking with poor posture and slump shoulders, etc. seems to encourage negativity, which sparks carelessness/slothfulness and yuck in me more). Lastly, practicing good posture ALL the time, somehow matches with a more decluttered/simplied lifestyle too. Just a thought I wanted to share! Walking tall and confident is truly NEAT!

My moving saga continues! So far I've donated a huge box of shoes, two garbage bags full of clothes, 1 garbage bag full of outdoor gear, and another bag of toiletries. I had to keep reminding myself that throwing away objects does not mean throwing away the memories - but that little mantra really helped and things started flying into the donate pile! It felt really good to donate to a local charity that I know uses the donations locally. I'm really excited to FINALLY do it RIGHT not do it fast - which is why I've toted around years and years worth of junk...Yay!7

My moving saga continues! So far I've donated a huge box of shoes, two garbage bags full of clothes, 1 garbage bag full of outdoor gear, and another bag of toiletries. I had to keep reminding myself that throwing away objects does not mean throwing away the memories - but that little mantra really helped and things started flying into the donate pile! It felt really good to donate to a local charity that I know uses the donations locally. I'm really excited to FINALLY do it RIGHT not do it fast - which is why I've toted around years and years worth of junk...Yay!
