Is soda better than nothing?

So I’ve been having trouble eating lately. Very upset stomach. Managed to eat a Subway salad yesterday, but paid dearly for it the rest of the night/this morning. I have some sort of fat malabsorption issue going on, just waiting on doctors testing. So in order to quell my malaise and get even close to my calorie goals I’ve been back into sipping sprite and Pepsi. I have tried various protein shakes...they make me ill. I’m planning on living on oatmeal and ginger ale today. Is soda really going to derail me?

when I'm sick to my stomach, I don't worry about calories. I just try to eat what I can, which is usually a couple crackers here and there or a frozen waffle. If soda helps you I would drink it.

oof, that blows. My dad has something like that. Not his gallbladder, but the dr's can't figure it out. Eat and drink whatever won't make you ill.

Have you had the test that required you to eat lots of fat every day?

I think getting something in will help. You can also try BRAT (bananas rice applesauce toast). They are supposed to be very gentle on your stomach and you may be able to put them down.

Not yet. They just mailed me the order, but no “receptacle”. I did put a sample in a ziplock bag this morning, but not sure if they’ll accept it. I suspect pancreatitis, but my doctor doubts that...as I have only mild discomfort, and not the hallmark “severe pain”. Yesterday I only had 31g of fat, yet spent this morning with bm’s that consisted of oil floating on the surface of the water. Yet my stool is a normal color. My symptoms are scary and confusing at the same time. Sorry if this post is tmi, but I no longer have any shame/embarrassment. Whatever is wrong with me, it’s all I think about. Anyone care to play doctor? Tell me it’s not pancreatitis? My doctor is doing a colonoscopy next month to rule out IBD, which she also doubts I have since I’m not pooping blood. I’m at a loss, and would welcome advice.

Oatmeal goes down easy when I'm feeling sick, and if it comes to that, it comes up easy too. Feel better.

Have you been tested for Celiac? I don’t mean to be presumptuous but some of your symptoms sound familiar.

They ran a blood panel and tested for celiac, which came back negative. Are those blood tests definitive?

A false negative is rare but possible, the most likely reason would be eating gluten free before the test for a period of time. They test for antibodies, so you have to be eating a diet containing gluten for a reaction to show up.

When you're sick: ignore the diet for a few days and focus on getting better. I find that for upset stomachs both ginger ale and Sprite work wonders

I’m always sick to my stomach. I have erosive gastritis and something else...they don’t know what it is. They’re going to be testing me for chronic pancreatitis and a slew of IBD related diseases. It’s like my body doesn’t absorb fat. Even small amounts come right out of me, undigested. I’m just praying it’s nothing really bad. At this point I just eat/drink whatever sounds like it won’t make me sick...and the weight still comes off. Yesterday and today I’ve been slowly increasing my fat intake for an upcoming test on a stool sample. I’m supposed to eat 100g of fat a day prior to the test. As you can see, I’m nowhere near that much, and it’s making me so ill. I can’t wait to go back to 25g of fat a day, or less. I could live on a diet of only oatmeal, yogurt, Vernor’s, and Sprite. I don’t “crave” anything anymore, except clear beverages. At least the numbers on the scale keep going down.

If fats are the issue how are you with stomaching a largely plant-based diet, excluding those that are high in fat? I agree with eating what you can stomach regardless of nutritional content but a bit more variety could be a welcome change.

Good luck with finding some answers.

have you had your cholesterol checked? when mine was really really high I was like I was in the bathroom often. and I had oily poop. also if you eat a lot of cashews or certain types of nuts that can cause the same issue. cashews do it to me.

have them do liver testing too if your liver cannot process fats properly it will come right out and it can cause pain and other issues too. I cant tolerate high amounts of fat either due to my health issue(liver doesnt process fats/cholesterol efficiently).

Yes, in this case I would think so.
