Had the hardest, most stressful (and slowest!) 100km ride I've ever done. Decided to explore a completely new area for me so plotted a route and took the bike on the car to Ashdown Forrest in Kent (southern England)
Managed to leave my phone/wallet at home so had to commit to riding a long route in countryside I didn't know at all with no backup navigation, credit cards or way to call for help in case of something going wrong.
My Garmin of course decided this was the day to go bonkers and try to send me back to the start after 15 miles and then try to send me off course, turn left when I needed right and even invented road junctions that didn't exist. The whole ride was a series of beeps and instructions to U turn. Did manage to trace the thin blue line all the way with a few little mistakes.
Really challenging ride with tiny narrow roads, very short sight lines giving little warning of approaching traffic, poor road surfaces, constant changes of elevation with no periods of easy flat rides to relax and some serious climbs. Beautiful countryside though - when I could take my eyes off the road and the Garmin screen!
5371 ft of elevation in 64 miles.
!97 miles so far for the month including 152 for the week.
One more hard training week and then I taper for a hilly closed roads Century (Velo South).
Nice going sijomial. I appreciate people like you who can climb. I can go 60 miles easy, but when I was riding with a group years ago, all the 35 year old would always leave me behind on the climbs. It was all good, I would always catch up and leave them in my dust in the flats. Bad knees from my running days... I need to take it easy on the ascents.

@tdecel
Thank you.
I can climb - but not very well or very fast!
Which is why I'm doing a lot of hills as part of my training as it's my weakest area I need to improve on.
The two people I know who I regard as good climbers gave me the same advice - "to get better on hills, do lots of hills and push really hard".
My knees are a mess and I have to severely limit the amount of standing climbing I do. Having a nice low bottom gear also helps my knees a lot as my "souplesse" goes to pot when cadence drops too much.
I use an 11-speed cassette with 11-32 gears which really suits my typical cycling terrain.1 -
4 Sept - 21 mins/ 8.7kms
5 Sept - 35 mins / 15.2kms
6 Sept - 32 mins / 14.6kms
7 Sept - 33 mins / 15.6kms -harder this morning, hip flexors fatigued (and I'm not new to cycling btw)
10 Sept - 28 mins/ 13.68kms - back to being on top form after a few (sort of) rest days (I don't DO sedentary in general)
Total for Sept so far .... 67.58 kms
Got my strength training in this morning too - I workout at home and hubby tells me this morning I'm vain because I lift weights!! hmmm!! I've told him I am preserving muscle and bone mass so my body ages healthily...of course there is a little bit of vanity because I do like having good muscle tone (you'd think after 5 years of seeing me workout almost daily he would be used to it!)
Everyone else is doing fab! keep up the great work - that's 1/3 of September gone already...I need to keep pedalling if I'm going to make my goal of 250!

What exactly is an exergame?
An "exergame" is exercise done via a game system of some kind. For example, Wii Fit Plus or Wii EA Sports.
Fitness Apps like Zwift or "Zombies, RUN!" et cet could be considered the newer generation equivalent.
I use my old original Wii, and a walking game called "Walk It Out" (WIO for short; called Step to the Beat in UK). Not owning a smart phone, fitbit or any other up-to-date techno doodad, it is the only way for me to count steps that can't be looked up as "Point A to Point B" on Google Maps.0 -

My week has been going fantastical. After 124 miles last week, I started Monday with a gym session followed by a bike trifecta.
2018.09.10 - Monday: 45 minutes +/- on the gym floor working shoulders. Trying to use dumbbells over machines, + 35 minutes on the Precor AMT elliptical. Sustaining top level (20) for the last 13 minutes.
2018.09.11 - Tuesday: 20.72 miles on my "time trail" carbon frame 17.5 MPH average, time: 1:10:51
2018.09.12 - Wednesday 22.50 miles. On my road carbon frame, 16.6 MPH, time: 1:21:25
2018.09.13 - This morning: 22:58 miles, same course, 16.5 MPH average, 1:22:00
I would like to do one more 20 miler either tomorrow or Saturday, and then a 40 to 45 miler on Sunday.
~~~~~~~~~~~
Great job everyone.1 -
It will take some time to be comfortable using the Wii controller and pedalling at the same time .... but I am starting to find "the optimum bike-cruzin' music zone" tempo that will let me merge Exergame-on-tv with stationary biking. Last night I managed 25 minutes and 220 calories burned (If I had been on the mini-trampoline at this tempo, I would have burned maybe 47 cals in the same length of time).
Finished off a good training week at the end of a 7 week training block.
210 miles for the week and 406 miles for the month, also 2/3 of the way to the Strava 8000m of climbing in a month challenge.
A bout of illness has left me in a slightly odd state of fitness: good sprint speed, good endurance at low intensities but noticeably down on speed endurance as I'm struggling to maintain higher intensity for long durations.
Poor timing as I'm one week out from my first closed roads century ride.
Taper week will involve coming off caffeine, drinking beetroot shots (yum! ) and a few gentle rides.2 -
I just bought my first ever road bike yesterday (Specialized Diverge E5 Elite). I've only ever ridden hybrids before. I also bought my first ever clipless pedals.
I spent about 30 minutes in my kitchen practicing clipping in/out, including falling over and busting my butt in the kitchen (though better than the road, hah!)
Once I got that down, went on a ride. PR'd every single segment, without going nearly as hard as I would push myself on the hybrid. The most significant segment was a somewhat hard climb, which I PRd by over 20% (4minutes from previous 5minute PR).
ANYWAYS, I'm absolutely in love with the bike. And the clipless pedals. They make a world of difference! I'm itching to get back out already and I just got home.3 -
Ive had three clip stacks, each time i was unclipped but leaned towards the clipped side, watch out for that.
19hrs 453Km 5500 metres of climbing for september.
Going faster but a new unwelcome feature of my cycling has started to appear, Im cramping around the four hour mark. First time I put it down to lack of nutrition and cramps literally stopped me dead in my tracks, but the second time I think i did all the right things, cramp wasnt so bad and i was able to ride through the cramps slowly.0 -
Lowering the sensitivity setting on the Wii sensor bar worked wonders today! (unless it was having the movement- sensing nunchucks on my ankles instead of my thighs) Not that how quick and easy the points in the game rack up actually make any difference to the mechanics of the biking ... apart from a motivation vs frustration about "the scenery" point of view.1 -
Congrats on your new love.
My first clipless stack was falling at the feet of a rather startled elderly lady who was waiting to use a pedestrian crossing.
Maybe if I had read the instructions regarding adjusting the spring tension my foot might have released easier.1 -
