Why the sudden influx of keto

Was there something I missed on the news about keto? Seems like there has been a jump in keto starters and posts here as well as other people IRL that are starting.

I got a few friends here dabbling in keto or LCHF. Mainly due to trying something to help them curb hunger as they find it hard to be in a deficit otherwise.

It's become more and more trendy over the last 3-5 years and it's blown up in 2018...judging from comments I see on Facebook and Insta, most people don't really understand it or how it works and most think it's a requirement for losing weight.

And will viciously defend keto as the only way.

Part of the influx of keto is that it's being used more to treat a wider variety of problems...it's not just for epileptics anymore, doctors are mentioning it (or people are finding it without a dr) for migraines, parkinsons, diabetes, hormone imbalance, PCOS, cancer, autism, etc.

How is it for treating delusions of grandeur?

    I'm asking for a friend.

As with anything, side effects are different from person to person. I went on Keto after struggling with insulin resistance and it’s not been a problem since. And many of the side effects mentioned here, are because people don’t properly educate themselves before starting a new way of eating.

agreed. I don't have a problem with insulin resistance but I've never felt better in my life.

It's basically the new Adkins. A few years ago, there were 3000 threads on ppl arguing that that was the only way to lose weight.

Relief of insulin resistance is what people learn when searching keto diet information, very rarely is anyone diagnosed with that first and then search for cures and stumble on keto diets. As with any "diet" nothing wrong with keto if its something you can maintain daily. Insulin resistance has been around forever, its just in the last 2 decades diets have been marketed over drugs to address it.
  • I'm not a big fan of the Keto diet, but I'll try to just go quickly over the idea behind it and try to not make my post boring haha

So our body will mainly run of glucose with a normal diet to get energy (Glucose will undergo glycolysis to generate the energy we use ATP, NADH, Pyruvate...) but if glucose is not available, it also can run of Ketone Bodies which are basically just another source of energy the body creates from fat. The goal of Keto would be to eat no carbs to the point where you deplete your glucose, glycogen... And your body starts running of ketone bodies, so your body is just burning through fat now...

And like @bojack5 mentioned, Insulin resistance has been around forever, one of the reasons people go for this diet also would be because every time you eat carbs, sugar.. the blood sugar spikes up, so the insulin spikes up as well. Going Keto (no carbs...) will help keep your growth hormone at a higher level because insulin is an antagonistic hormone for GH.

e.g. When you sleep or are fasting, your GH will increase which will put the body in a more of a fat burning state and when you wake up and eat carbs immediately, it spikes your blood sugar, releases insulin and that would suppress your GH release (which will also have another bad affect if you're trying to cut weight because insulin is more of a fat storage hormone). With all that said, it's good to cycle diets and change things for time to time.
