I typed this out once and it disappeared, sorry if it’s repost. My goal weight has been criticized three times this week. I want to weigh in the 130’s. I am 5’4”. One person goal weight is much higher than mine at same height, one said I should be satisfied at 150 even though they are 135 at 5’7’. Another said because I have children and am older I should be satisfied w a higher weight. I feel like that is selling myself short. Do they want me to stay fat ? And for what reason? They said not when I asked, just said 130s is too low and skinny. Grrr!
Well hon, 140 isn't fat, depending on your bone structure. HAVING SAID THAT you seem to have a realistic goal at 130. If people have issues with that, then its on them, not you. Unless your doctor tells you that's too light, then you don't need to worry. Five-four is average height and women in that group generally weigh between 115-135 (according to one report I read). So no worries! You focus on your goal and good luck to you!

I have a question: when you're avoiding answering this question about how much more you have left to lose, what exactly do you say? Because I'm starting to get this question now, and I'm not keen to share that info.
To avoid the nasty comments, simply say that you're not sure the exact amount of fat you're going to lose (which is true), you're just trying to be healthier (also true) through eating a balanced diet and a decent amount of exercise. It's just vague enough to not actually give details and most people don't argue over trying to be healthier.
Also, by using the word fat instead of weight seems to offset most people's negativite reaction towards thier own misperception of what a normal weight is.7 -
Do whatever feels right for you. Don't listen to people. I don't talk to people about my weight loss/goals/stuggles
Totally agree. There are so many factors, from your personal biomechanics and body structure, to your own metabolism, etc.. if 130 is where you feel your best, then keep that goal.
If you picked that goal for an external reason (to please dimeone else, to look a certain way) and not from within yourself (to feel your best), only then is it a bad goal.
Be true to yourself.1 -
Others are going to have opinions, just get to a goal you feel is right for you.1

I’m 5’9” and started at 180. As I got closer to my goal of 150 (which was socially acceptable), my goal started dropping a little lower. I had never been below 150. I reached 137. Not a number anyone thought was healthy. But if they looked at me without knowing the number, they all told me how good I looked. And I was the most active and entergetic of my life and most healthy. I’m back up to 148 now and even though it’s only 11 pounds up, I can feel a huge difference and am working on losing it again. Make up a number, if they insist. No one knows what your current weight is without telling them. Say you’re 40 lbs heavier than you are and you want to lose 30 lbs...they probably won’t bat an eye. People are weird.9

This. The "ideal" weight -- and even what the previous poster said is ideal still doesn't encompass the full "normal" BMI range, so I'm going to totally side-eye it as likely coming from a site with less-than ideal motives -- and the average weight do not match up in the U.S.1 -
Ignore the haters. I'm 5'4" and my original goal weight was 147, since that's what I'd been able to maintain at in my late 20s. I've now lowered it to 135. I'm currently 143 and still have a nice size belly. Everyone and every body is different. I'm 48 years old, and maybe it's because I have less muscle tone than when I was younger, but my weight hasn't been this low since I was in college, even though size-wise I'm about the same as I was when I was 147. Bodies are unpredictable and weird. Do what's best for YOU!2

All these well-meaning people are nothing more than arm chair dietitians. They don't really know much about you or your medical history. IMHO, you should talk this over with your doctor.

Omg I can't imagine how much I would have to eat to weigh 168!!!! You would be literally rolling me down the street. At my heaviest , eating tons of junk food I was 140's! That's more than my husband weighs and he's much taller than me.22 -
There are body shamers that target thin people too. For example, I don't like cake. When I politely turn down cake, people roll their eyes and scoff at me. When I say I'm losing weight, they do the same thing. What is everyone's problem with the healthy weight range?7

I weighed 179 when I started using MFP. It was very overweight for a 5'4" woman and yes I weighed more than my husband. I looked pregnant. Clothes did not fit well. I hurt all the time. It was hard to walk very far or do a lot of exercise. I was out of breath climbing the stairs in my house. I could not bend over to tie my shoes. I had a very hard time sleeping. I was slow but was not rolled down the street by anyone ever. I did not break chairs or get stuck in furniture.
I did not get that fat eating whole cakes, whole pizzas, tubs of ice cream, triple bacon cheeseburgers, bags of chips, whole turkeys. I did not eat more than my husband. I did get fat by consistantly eating more calories than I needed for my activity level... like 300-500 extra. That might have been a too much bread, an extra slice of pizza, a couple of cookies, too much guacamole or peanut butter here and there.
For a 5'4" sedentary 40 year old woman to maintain at 168 lbs she would likely be eating only around 1,700 calories a day. That would be about 250 ish calories more than if she were 140 lbs. That is not massive quantities of food for many adult humans.
You may be younger and more active so may have eaten a lot more at 140 lbs than someone else. You don't have to be a jerk about it though.28 -

That link has a BMI scale different then those I have used. at 5'1 and 132 the others have me at average-healthy. this one says i need to get down to 127 to be healthy
I can TOTALLY eat very easily to be 168. I ate myself up to over 200 at various points in my life. It's pretty darn easy. And I am only 5'1. Was it healthy? nope. but it WAS easy3 -

No one said they should *all* be around that weight. The *average* is that weight. Whether or not you like it doesn't change the statistics.
Ideal is not the same as average. For a refresher: Average = mean or median weight. So you've got women who are lighter (apparently both of us included) and those who are much heavier. You *average* all of those together and that's how you get to 168.
Congratulations, we're both below the average weight. That doesn't mean that it's OK to shame people who are heavier.16 -
weight is a very poor indicator of just about everything when it comes to health. The only time it really should be considered is when it is at the extremes.

Nobody said women who are 5'4 SHOULD be 170lbs, they said according to statistics the average 5'4 woman IS around 170. And you said you couldn't imagine eating as much as all those women are.
I'm 5'4 and was gaining around 1 lb per month when I hit 148lbs and decided to make a change. If I hadn't, I would eventually have gotten at least close to 168. One lb a month is an extra 3500 cals per month, which is an extra 117 calories a day. Not that difficult to do.
OP, everyone's already covered it, but your goal sounds fine. If you get to the point where you personally are not sure, schedule a checkup and see what your doctor thinks.
I'm currently 5'4 and range from 124 - 129. I've been maintaining for awhile, but I think I'm going to try to lose another 5 lbs and see how that looks. If I end up looking to "skinny" I can always gain it back11 -
I've pushed back on this. From these conversations, it seems the theory is that because we're old, we're gonna get sick; and when we get sick, we're gonna lose weight; and if we lose weight while thin, we'll starve to death (or at least to worse illness) much faster. Or something like that. <eye roll>
Subjectively, seems like it's most often been said to me by someone who prefers to be at a little higher weight, and prefers not to be very active, now that they're around the same age I am (62), so their happy and sustainable calorie balance is at a higher weight than it was when they were 19. I'll let them do them, and place their own health bets on the weight they prefer. I'll do likewise.

It was weird -- my organization's IT graphics came up, but I didn't get a warning. I didn't see any source for the data in the graphic, though -- like, there's normal BMI, but it didn't say where the "ideal" column came from -- and the bottom text wasn't well thought out, so I just figured it was a junk science site.4 -
If you look at the various charts for weight based on height (Robinson, Miller, Devine, & Hamwi) and average them out, you get 154.875 lbs. Calculating my weight based on the highest possible normal BMI would be ~163 lbs. I'm down ~86 pounds (I've got about 56 to go), and people have told me to stop because I'm too thin even though my BMI is 31.4 which is still considered overweight. I just tell them that I'll see how I look/feel when I get close to my goal.1

Or just say you'll know when you're finished losing when you like the way your clothes fit. Case closed.3

Heck I couldn't stick to the weight I wanted - just too hungry to maintain so few calories! But if people can do it, good for them! What matters is having realistic expectations and find a weight that YOU are comfortable with.1
