@shanaber i love that "cone"
no he's not. i'm working with the director of the rescue who is an excellent trainer. it would be more ideal if i was at home and "fixing' it better before leaving for work, but stupid bills. old gal barks. speed demon hurt herself trying to get out of crates in the past. but they are ok out of the crate. i'm pretty sure i'd come home to rubble where my house used to be if i let him out of the crate when i'm at work.6 -

10/1 - lifted
10/2 - 2.4 miles - W7D1 of C25k. Ran for 25 minutes straight :-o
10/4 - lifted
10/5- 2.5 miles - W7D2.
10/6- lifted/went on "hike" (with 2 year old, we didn't get far), rode bikes - good day
10/8-lifted
10/9-torrential downpour, didn't get to run plus my basement flooded, woopee
10/10-lifted
10/11- 2.2 miles W7D3
Since I'm doing C25k, it has you walk 5 minutes as a warm up, but since it's getting a little cold outside, I decided to do a little warm up inside like squats/lunges/jumped around a little bit so I could just run straight out the front door. It was fine I think.
I passed by a group of three guys running with head lamps. At that point I looked down at myself and realized I was wearing head to toe gray. What do you all use when running at dark? Is a reflective arm band thing good enough? Should I get a light of some sort? I've seen a guy running with just a circular blinking light clipped onto his shirt before. I run in well-lit areas if that makes a difference.
I've been experimenting with different things for visibility. I've tried out three high-vis safety vests and not liked any of them - I found them distracting and hard to fit well (one size fits none). I try and buy clothing in bright, reflective colors when I can, but have sometimes struggled with that, especially with pants and heavier tops. I ran a night race where they gave away head lamps but I haven't tried running with it again - I didn't love how it effected my posture. I think my favorite so far has been taking the "free" reflective bands that came with the vests I didn't return and wrapping them around my arms and legs. I'm guessing how comfortable and secure that is would depend on your anatomy and running form, but they're pretty adjustable so there are lots of options. The picture below is from after a 6.5 mile run a couple of days ago - I didn't have to adjust them at all once I got going, although I did make sure to line them up so the parts where they fastened were facing away from my body, and one of them did snag my cheap leggings a little. I've gone out with just arm bands before but I like the idea of spreading out the visibility to different moving parts of me.
Picture below the cut:2 -
@MegaMooseEsq that's mostly what i look like too. and i have a baseball hat with a 4 led lights. i've seen brim lights too. my dogs leashes are reflective. 2 dogs have reflective collars. the dog leash belt is reflective too. and i have a "vest" that is more like suspenders that clips at my natural waist and is fully adjustable (see photo)
on my christmas list is a beanie made with reflective thread3 -

I run in well lit areas in a high vis vest, the kind construction workers wear. It was cheap and it breathes. There is a guy who often runs the same path in the morning, he has a headlamp. I've spoken to work mates who drive past me in the morning, and they prefer the high vis vest - can be seen a long way away. The headlamp is just confusing. And given my goal is to be seen, I'll stick with that.3 -
I bought rechargeable clip on lights but turns out I don't have a place to clip it. So what I do is use the bike mount (I think its silicon? ) and wear it like a ring. So basically made myself a knuckle light.
Plus my hydration vest has reflective stuff on it.2 -

That's a significant change. What happened to increase her time by half an hour??
@mbaker566 In the first picture of your new foster he/she looked so calm, looked like he was standing at the door with the leash on waiting to go for a run/walk. 2nd picture after the escape & destruction - relaxing with a Who Me? expression naw you must be mistaken I didn't do that.
@shanaber That doggy cone collar looks inflatable - definitely need Antennas and some LED flashing lights for the Halloween Walk about.
@Orphia @Elise4270 Will be looking at the holes in the sheet when I get home tonight and setting my alarm clock to wake up at weird times for a headlight run.3 -
Sitting here before going to club practice this evening, catching up on posts.
24 (or 26.2) hour run for Dennis: I'll be running some time Sunday, but my schedule is such that I can't easily predict when. So I have not signed up. Running Boston 2019 for Dennis will have to be good enough.
Running in the rain: Checked the forecast. I have a 15K race Saturday morning. Forecast says 90% chance of rain Saturday, low 40, high 53. Sounds like Boston 2018, though I doubt it will rain that hard. The 3 or 4 miles along Lake Ontario might be reminiscent of Boston, particularly with the forecast calling for a west or WNW wind to drive whatever rain there is into my face; but it's only 9.3 miles. Shouldn't be a problem.4 -

@amymoreorless Thank you for posting that, I'll have show my wife this.
@shanaber love the new cone.
@PastorVincent YAY for the rain!
@mbaker566 where'd ya' get that vest? I want.....lol. tried one of the lightweight construction type vests but my body is sooooo long and the vest ends at the bottom of my ribcage and slides back so it sets against my throat(annoying )
Wasn't gonna run this morning d/t remnants of Michael hitting us and all that. Rolled out of bed at 0515 to the steady drumbeat of droplets on the roof, but no lightning. Dressed in my usual t-shirt and running shorts with a UA lightweight long sleeved top and a running hat(can't remember who first suggested this for the rain runs, but thank you) and proceeded to my usual running area by work. About halfway there the wind took a tree down as I was passing it, thought I had moved far enough out of the way, but alas I have to replace a headlight assembly. I truly lucked out as the car was still driveable and I was wholly unhurt. Got to the gym, climbed out and sprinkling but the wind had picked up, still no lightning. Reminded myself that races are not stopped d/t rain so needed to get the run in (thank you @PastorVincent , @Avidkeo and @MobyCarp , etc...). Started off all wrong, first step of the run was in a huge puddle I missed in the dark, at what I thought was a middling pace for the first mile to warm-up. The lap pace on the app said 12:15 for the first mile and I thought huh, that wasn't so bad. Miles 2 and 3 were 11:08 and 11:31 respectively, then back to the 12: for miles 4 and 5, 12:18 and 12:27. The end of my run this morning was by a huge puddle, picture 2-3 inches deep and about 15 feet long. Figured I was about to go inside anyways and was mostly soaked, as the rain and wind both picked up markedly during the jaunt, so I stomped and kicked through the puddle, making a general mess of myself. It felt great.

Trying to decide a distance for long slow run on Saturday and need some advice. 2 weeks out from HM, did 12miles 2 weeks ago and 9 miles last week, so I was thinking of somewhere in between @ 10-11 miles but not sure. Next week will be Monday hills, Tuesday 5, Wednesday lift/quick 1+ miler, Thursday 5, Friday lift/no run or zippy 1+miler if time, Saturday 6-7, and Sunday rest.

You had a tree come down on your car while you were driving to your running place, and you still ran?? I bow to you, that is impressive. I would have probably turned around and gone back home! I have to say stomping through the puddle sounds like fun!
I'm no expert, but 2 weeks out you could do 10-11 miles. I'm doing 20k (12.5 miles) 2 weeks before mine according to training plan.4 -
OMG that is incredible. Way to go Nike.1 -
@eleanorhawkins it's 5:15am, blowing a gale and pouring with rain. And I'm supposed to do 12k. No shame if I cut it short right? 😂
Get out there woman!!

Went, rain stopped by the time I went out, so 12k in an annoying wind that kept changing direction, grrr2 -

Good you. I went out at 6am. It sounded really stormy from my bed but when I went out the door it was merely blustery with the occasional very light shower. Too easy to turn over - the weather always sounds worse than it is!4 -
Stormy here today - very blustery and wet, but when I headed out (all amped to run in the rain following everyone's chatter about it here) I only had a few very light drizzly showers. It was an unusually early run for me - 6am - so I ran fasted and without caffeine and my pace reflects this. Fortunately, as I kept reminding myself as I trotted slowly along, I'm on taper so slow is good.

Hey all! I'm back! Sorry it took me so long. Summers get crazy and I think I go into a funk after my last big race of my training cycle which for me was the Superior Spring 50k last May. I intended to get back in here in September but that slipped by quick.
Running highlights of my summer were:
Dan Patch 5K - 24:24:34 (27/105 OA, 5/13 AG) Small race but mostly runners. I got to run this with my son and his girlfriend. He's NOT a regular runner at all but he lifts. She's a runner. She and I ran together for about 2 miles when I hear "Hey guys!" and look back to see my son with a big grin, hot on our heels! I thought I was already pushing as hard as I could that day, but I was NOT about to let my non-running son catch up to me! I picked up the pace a bit and his girlfriend tried to hang with me, but I started putting distance between both of them. I finished at 24:24, she finished at 25:24 (2nd AG) and he finished 26:08. Not bad for his first 5K!
Outrun Homelessness 5K - 26:47 (11/110 OA and 3rd AG) - it was a very small race our church puts on, and half were walkers. It's the 4th one and I've been to every one. It was a really hot and humid day (for Minnesota) and I struggled the entire time.
Surly Loppet Trail HM - 2:08:17 (256/492 OA, 26/43 AG) - 5 inches of rain two days before the race required a revised course. Half of it was actually paved and it was shortened by 3/4th of a mile. Though it was a beautiful day for a race, I was just getting my fitness back. I'm happy placing in the middle. Just a half mile from the start we had to run through a flooded trail. Water was half way up my shin at the deepest part! You have to check out the video:
https://www.facebook.com/loppet/videos/291880298087243
The other running highlight that wasn't a race was running with my son's girlfriend. She's from the Milwaukee area. My son got an internship in Milwaukee, but she got an internship in Minneapolis! I think these two have a great chance of ending up together long term so I wanted to make sure she saw the best of Minneapolis and St. Paul so she'd like it here. We set up weekly runs and went running around the lakes, St. Paul's Cathedral, the state capital, along the Mississippi River, through quaint downtown neighborhoods, the mansions in St. Paul, the Minneapolis Sculpture Gardens, St. Mary's Basilica, and some trail running. By the time she left Minneapolis, I think she loved the place. I think she had a great internship and I'm hoping she returns next summer so we can continue with our running tour.
I have three races in the next 4 weeks. Another trail HM this weekend, a 12-hour trail race next weekend, and an 8-hour trail race the first Saturday of November. The rest of my plans are below.
It's good to be back! I look forward to catching up with old friends and meeting some new ones!

@juliet3455 - the blue cone in the picture I originally posted is a blow up one similar to the neck pillows people use on long flights. The green one is some kind of playable foam. It wouldn't hurt if it bumped into you or the furniture but would keep him from getting to the stitches.
@workaholic_nurse - When I first read your post I thought you were running when the tree came down and was trying to figure out what headlight assembly (read as headlamp) was damaged without you getting hurt too - lol! I am so glad the damage wasn't worse and that you were not injured! Awesome rain run and puddle stomping! It always feels so great!
@7lenny7 - Yay! Welcome back!!
I made it to the gym yesterday and did a mish mash workout of treadmill run (fail), recombinant bike and elliptical. I ran/walked 1 mile on the treadmill and it made my foot too sore so headed to the cycle for 20 mins and another 15 on the elliptical. Coming home I was feeling pretty dejected about it all but it is what it is. If I can I will run/walk the 10k on Sunday and hopefully not have to DNF or DNS it... I do want to get my miles in for Dennis! I am off to training tonight and may try a very short run/walk tomorrow. Have the race expo on Saturday at the beach.4 -

Nice. Oh I'm coming to Auckland for a night on the 23rd. Staying in Grafton. suggestions on a nice running track in that area for the morning of the 24th? Was thinking about driving to Mission bay cause I like flat haha. Hows the Domain? I am free till 10am (yay!)1 -
@hesn92 reflective gear for night running is a must of course, but I think it's imperative that you also have a beam of light that you can direct. You want to be to be able to cast the beam into a cars interior to make sure they see you. If a car is coming from a cross street and you're not directly in front of them, reflective gear won't help. If they're on a main road waiting to turn left in front of you as you run down the same main road, they won't see you because your reflective gear is not in front of them. Reflective gear only works when the headlamps of the car is questions are pointed at you. Even if they are, they could be oblivious to you. In situations where a car might cross my path, or come towards me as I run in the street (I hate sidewalks) I will sweep my headlamp across their windshield to make sure they see me. I'm not annoying with it, just a steady sweep like a lighthouse beacon. My headlamp is bright enough that they won't miss it.
I use a Black Diamond Spot headlamp and highly recommend them. They're not rechargeable but the battery lasts one hella-long time, they have both a spot beam and a wide beam, both are infinitely adjustable, it has a battery level indicator, lightweight, very easy to adjust, and waterproof. I wore mine for 12 hours in a race which started out with a thunderstorm, turned to sleet, then into a blizzard and the Spot shone bright through it all.
@mbaker566 I have a reflective harness very similar to yours. It's very comfortable and easy to adjust. I think mine is the Amphipod Xinglet. The harness or suspender construction makes it very easy to put over layers when it's cold, and it doesn't hold in the heat when it's hot. Very good product!
I also use LED armbands and a flashing LED clip on the back of my hat. I had gotten out of the habit of wearing my "bling" lately because I've been doing my night running in a local park, but last week, in just one run, I was nearly hit THREE damn times! In every case it was a situation where reflective gear couldn't help because the car was turning into me, and I didn't have my headlamp to shine at them.
@shanaber I went back a few pages but didn't find out what happened to Hobbes...what happened?!?!
I'm noticing folks are hiding photos behind spoiler alerts. is that the new thing here?
6 -
@hesn92 I tend to run in bright neon tops, and during the winter I usually have a flashing armband (Nathan LightBender).
@7lenny7 Some great runs there!
The temps this morning were low compared to recent days (55F) so my recovery run felt GREAT! I ran an initial 8 miles and then did another 4 with the group. The person who I normally run 5 with wasn't there today, so afterwards I did another mile to finish up.
Tonight I'll roll my legs again ready for tomorrow's long run, and because that means a real early start, it also means a very early night tonight, so g'night everyone!

I have the same amphipod xinglet. Love it.
I think using the spoiler allows the pages to load faster, then if you want to see the pic you can just select it. Its kinda nice if there is a large file. Least that is what i see.
LOVE THAT YOU'RE BACK!
