It's October!
Time to get SPOOKY FIT !
WARNING: Following this thread may be addictive and it get's very talkative. Miss a day and you can be 50 posts behind. This is the most popular challenge on MFP. If you found us in the middle (or end) of the month, you're still welcome to join us. No requirements or special invite needed. Once you post, you're in. And yes, we do this every month.
You set your own pace and distance for the month. We will all be doing it together. This is your virtual running group to keep you accountable and enjoy a virtual coffee with your fellow runners after you run. Make new friends and learn a few things.
This is a continuation from the September 2018 Running Challenge which can be found at:
https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10393468/current-past-challenges#latest
Anyone can join in. New & Old. And if you found this thread late, you can join in at any time.
We have members that are total beginners all the way to Boston Qualifiers and beyond. We are a friendly and encouraging bunch.
Here are the details from last month that applies here again.
Anybody want to join me for a running challenge? Set a goal here and mark it every day here. OPTIONAL: You can post your progress by creating a ticker at http://www.tickerfactory.com (If creating one seems difficult, then don't let that stop you. Just type in your daily miles here.)
You can run, walk, or do treadmill. Just be consistent. I am setting a goal for 100 miles. Don't let my high (or low) goal intimidate you. Some can do 25, 50; whatever you like. We can help motivate each other. What do you say? If you are new to running, set a low goal. (You can also log your miles in km's if you choose.) Also, if you rather log your progress by time rather than distance, you are free to do that as well.
You can set your goal now but wait until October 1, 2018 to start logging your runs.
Also, don't forget to join our group which can be found at:
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/21182-monthly-running-challange
(We also have a strava group and Facebook group.)
There you will find lots of good info, and it's a place where everyone can talk to each other for further motivation. It's also a place to find help when there is a problem with this thread.
After you run, come into this thread and post what you did. (don't forget to hit the star in the upper right corner to bookmark this thread) Keep a running tally of what you did this month, and interact with the others. Many folks come in here and chat it up even on their rest days or while recouping from injury. This is a very social group and we talk about many things to include running. Very friendly bunch here so don't be afraid to say hi (even if this is your first time). Talk about a recent race or one coming up. Ask questions, provide answers, or just learn. Participation is what makes this group successful.
Not quite sure how to log your runs, follow what many other people are doing. Even look at last month's thread that I posted above.
*******OPTIONAL TICKER*************
Info on tickers since I know there will be questions. Sign up for an account http://www.tickerfactory.com and create your ticker.
Then you need to update it after you do a run and post it here. Here is what you will need to do.
After setting up your ticker, you will need to make note of the weblink they give you so you can return. An example would be:
http://www.tickerfactory.com/exercise/w6K1EiX/ <<<< the last part will be a part of the image link (explained below) that will be supplied to you after you initially create your link.
When you return to TickerFactory with the weblink, go to your settings page. Make sure you type your pin in that you set when you created your ticker account.
Then where it says "Your current cumulative value, there is an add button. Just add what you just did and the cumulative value automatically changes. Then hit next.
Now after you added your new miles (or km's) to your ticker you need to post it here.
After you hit next, it will give you a bunch of codes suggesting on how to display your ticker.
Use the one at the bottom where it says Direct Image URL:
It will look something like:
http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png
To display that correctly in your post, make sure you place the img tags around that link. So it will look, (removing the spaces in the img tags):
[ img ] http://tickers.TickerFactory.com/ezt/t/w6K1EiX/exercise.png [ /img ]
^^^^^^^ Don't forget to remove the spaces between the brackets. ^^^^^^^^^^
Some key things to pay attention to when posting your ticker.
1: Use the link that ends in .png
2. Remember the [ img] and [ /img] tags go in between the link
3. remove the spaces in the img tags before posting
4. YES, there is a / in the second /img tag
By the way, everyone here should consider themselves a runner no matter how fast or slow they are(unless you find a dead body- then you're a mere jogger). No judgment here. We all started somewhere. No comparisons, except to your former self. Don't compare my Chapter 20 to your Chapter 1.

Holy cow, October already! My September goal was 85 miles, and I should hit 95 by the end of the long run I’m still kind of convincing myself to get out and do shortly. I’ve got two road races in October (10K and HM) and am planning one virtual race as well (14K). With all that it doesn’t make sense to increase my mileage much, so I’m going to set my goal at 85 again with 100 miles as my stretch goal. I think I can make it if I stay healthy!
My other fitness goals for the month are to run my second half marathon faster than my first, lift twice a week with one weight increase per workout, and stretch at least 60 minutes a week.9 -
My goal is 100 miles again. I don't have enough time right now for any more. I can only manage weight training 1-2 days a week. Wish it was 3-4. Once I graduate, it will be lovely.9
-
To get back to a civilized work - life balance. Sticking with my 140km goal (87 miles) as that is a realistic minimum to be in a constant HM ready state. Also the local pool reopens after its yearly maintenance cycle so will be back in Adult Swim club which is minimum 2 nights a week.
Will lose a few days as my brother farms about 1300 acres of land ( picture 1 mile wide by 2.5 miles long ) and they are just getting into the swing of harvest so I usually volunteer to help out on weekends running Combine ( harvester ) or driving the grain trucks back to the yard to dump the grain into the storage bins.
Received bad news this week our local running store is closing after 8 years in business - internet shopping broke their business plan and its hard to compete with online retailers who provide no storefront services. A very sad running community. Looking in my shoe closet and shoe rotation of 12 active pairs 10 came from the store, 1 from MEC and 1 from Running Room. Now its a 10 hour drive round trip for MEC or RR.13 -
I have a come back race on the 14th, and a trail half November 3rd. I'm not sure that was wise of me to schedule and may have been a bit premature and naive to think that I'd be ready for a half before spring.
So, my goal for October is to build without aggravating anything.
I'm in for 65 miles, but with any luck I'll catch 90.12 -
Monthly question.
1) With holiday's coming up and the return of cooler or warmer weather. What's your stragedy mitigating the particular challenges you face these last few months of the year?
2) pretend for a moment your 8, unless you really are dressing up, then dish.... What are you going to be for Halloween?
4 -
My goal for the month will be 80 as I enter the last month before my half marathon. Wow, hard to believe it's almost time for Vegas!
Monthly Questions:
1) I don't buy a lot of candy for the house. I avoid it easily at work. Being gluten-free does have its perks. I stay active (my fav weather to run in is coming!).
2) I think I'd like to be Luna Lovegood from HP. Or maybe a serial killer (and yes, as an 8ish year old I was totally into true crime/serial killers). I don't do anything for Halloween anymore. It used to be my favorite holiday but now I just record Hocus Pocus and watch it alone on Halloween because DH always switches shifts with someone that has kids.8 -
"I am not a runner"
But I ran once last month, therefore I am.
I'm keen to do this, because it will be interesting to see what I can do, and then accurate set a goal next month.
Goal: 5km
Distance so far: 0km
(Lol)
19 -
My goal for October is going to be loosely 75 but I am hoping to get closer to 100. It really depends on how things go with Hobbes and what the final diagnosis is. Regardless I will be making myself head out the door because he won't be able to go with me or bug me to go. I also have a 10k in the middle of the month and we are heading to Florida at the end of the month for a week of fun at Disney (yes even living next to Disney CA we still need to check out Disney FL )
Thanks @Elise4270 for setting up the challenge for the month!
Questions for the month:
1) I don't have the weather concerns that others might have in November and December. I love the holidays but since it is just DH and me we don't do a lot of decorating or celebrating. I bake lots of cookies and send them all to family and friends so they aren't much of a threat to us eating them.
2) When I was 8 I loved being a hobo for Halloween. I got to wear my dad's old clothes (shirt, hat, suspenders, etc.) and put charcoal on my face. As adults I haven't dressed up in a long time. DH loves Halloween and dressing up and scare um... treat the kids at the door. I used to watch from the side of the house and let him know if it was little, little kids so he could moderate his approach. I loved hearing the kids say 'I was so scared, let's go back and do it again!'. He even helped for several years in a neighbor friend's haunted house.
We actually won't be home for Halloween this year so no costumes and no Halloween candy needed.8 -
Yay October! Fingers crossed it'll stop being so hot soon :-) I actually finished this morning's 8am run just sweaty rather than absolutely drenched in sweat, so it must be starting to cool down a little. Dawned on me while running this morning though that I had been looking forward to it cooling down so I don't have to crawl out of bed at 7am every darned Sunday but, as my long runs get longer, I'm still going to have to get out there before it gets too late unless I want to entirely lose my Sunday mornings....
Tomorrow sees the start of week 3 of half marathon training. Have signed up for a '5k' (it's actually 4.8 according to a map I saw) on the 28th but not sure how hard I'll race it as my husband has signed up too and he only runs like once every 3 months for 10 minutes then complains he's dying **insert eye rolls here**
Soooo.... training plan calls for a total of 106 kilometres for the month, I'll go for a conservative goal of 90km and a stretch goal of 105, then if I stick firmly to plan I should beat both **grin**
Monthly questions:
1) Half marathon December 9th.... fingers crossed training for that will keep me under control. Luckily here in Spain we don't have as many holiday feasts, Halloween isn't a very big thing so no candy problems and no Thanksgiving. As long as I survive it, I have my eye on another on March 24th.... that means I'd start into another 12 week training schedule after New Year. I must NOT let that become an excuse to overindulge at Christmas however!
2) Being the mother of a teenaged girl I am already a witch and do not need to pretend to be anything else for Halloween :-D

Hello everyone!
I used to be a runner, and then some scheduling changes left me with absolutely no time to keep it up and I am ridiculously out of shape now... Found out recently that my blood pressure is a bit high. Trying to do what I can to get it under control without having to go on meds.
I like this "set your own goal and just come here and chat" approach. I want to get back into it, and I want some encouragement and motivation, but I don't need the pressure of a group that holds me to any expectations. I'm thinking this may be enough to push me to get out there again.
Yesterday I attempted day 1 of couch to 5k. I wasn't able to finish it, but i did about 20 minutes. I am going to keep attempting day 1 until I finish it. In that 20 minutes I covered about 1.5 miles, so I will start with that... three times a week = 4.5 miles per week... over 4.5 weeks = 20.25 miles. I will set my October goal at 25 miles, push myself a little, but not too much.
For the time being, my count will include running AND walking. I just need to get back out and moving again.18 -
-
-
In for October! I'm not setting a mileage goal, but rather a goal to follow my physiotherapist's advice and work with my coach to build back to a 25 km/week base.
Monthly question.
1) With holiday's coming up and the return of cooler or warmer weather. What's your stragedy mitigating the particular challenges you face these last few months of the year?
I went out yesterday and bought 2 pairs of full length running tights in a size larger than last year (sigh) and a larger pair of fleece lined tights as well. So the cold and my tights not fitting is no excuse. As far as food & baking goes, with the tendinitis I have in my right hand I might not make as many cookies. So that will help...
2) pretend for a moment your 8, unless you really are dressing up, then dish.... What are you going to be for Halloween?
My husband has a fez, bow tie and suspenders. I am thinking of ordering a naughty police officer costume to go with it, since I'll be dying my hair red again a week or so before Halloween. I don't have the legs to be a perfect match for his costume, but I'll give it my best effort! Bonus points to anyone who guesses our theme! (Also, my oldest child is named Rory so he will fit right in even if he is Batman instead of a Roman centurion...)

Just joiningfor the first time! I have a half marathon in December I’m training for and I’m not as conditioned as I use to be, so I’m setting my goal to 25 to start off.11
-
So, first... I am still alive, I think.
Next, where do I even start? August and September were insane at their best. Downright incomprehensible at times.
To quote an acquaintance “that boy friend of yours must be something special.” “Uhhhh yeah, but why ya say that?” “Well, new job, new town, new house, new car.... same boyfriend.”
Any extra time I had, I was packing, or car shopping, or interview prepping, or dealing with water pouring thru the floor/ceiling of the “new” apartment, or sobbing uncontrollably due to being overwhelmed and boyfriend looking at me funny or something and it was the last straw on my sanity... or yeah... and it was stupid hot, with terrible air quality, and how many other excuses do I need to give?
I think I have ran all of 3 times since you all heard from me last. Two 1-2 mile runs in early August, and then 6.8 miles as part of a relay team for the first ever Cheyenne marathon, last Sunday. (Was only supposed to be 6.6- but, did I mention it was the first? And apparently we don’t know that signs are a thing? And so, some wrong turns were had by all). But I’m sure we all can see how badly this training plan came together.... ugh. I lived... well kind of, apparently this was the last straw on my immune system, and so Wednesday when my employees strongly suggested that they didn’t want to see their boss at work the next day, I took it as a hint to go to the doctor. So, been nursing the darn ear infection and bronchitis the rest of the week.
I have managed to obtain a cheap elliptical in my small town. Haven’t found a treadmill anyone is getting rid of that doesn’t say “don’t use it for running” when you google the model.... so I figured I would start with the elliptical to try and counter some excuses. We already had our first snow... we went from 90 to snowing very quickly, so I already see my next version of excuses coming, so trying to fix that.
So, October: no idea what I want my goal to be, other than to be better than August and September. Still have lots of craziness going on, although hopefully less than I have had. So, just to put a number to the blank slate, ummm... 30 miles?

1) With holiday's coming up and the return of cooler or warmer weather. What's your stragedy mitigating the particular challenges you face these last few months of the year?
No stragedy. I am really just making this up as I go. Y'all think I am like this expert or something, but I really am probably the most clueless one on this thread...
2) pretend for a moment your 8, unless you really are dressing up, then dish.... What are you going to be for Halloween?
8 year old me did not dress up, and I probably will not either. If my wife is not around, I will turn off all the lights and hide under my covers until it is over.6 -
Well i did not get my September goal. I was aiming for 140km but only got 118KM.BUT I now realise 140 was probably over enthusiastic given that was only my 3rd month of consistent running. This month I will be doing 140km minimum as my training really ramps up for the November half. I'm getting really excited!
I finally feel that I have my groove, I have good shoes, a fancy gadget, comfortable clothing etc. I have got past my injury and have a much better feel for my body - if that makes sense lol.
Monthly question.
1) November will be flat out for me. I have a study day I organise the second weekend, the half the 3rd weekend, a wedding the 4th, then its my birthday!
Among that I will be discussing with the University about my masters and getting that off the ground. So October will feel like the calm before the storm. I always love this time of year. I feel like we are opening up, breathing and getting space. Probably because that's literal with spring, and summer haha.
2) we don't really do Halloween here. If I were I'd love to do Wonder woman. I'd probably just be a ghost though, way easier8 -
@sarahthes Love the Halloween costume ideas! Dr. Who and Amy Pond!6

@sarahthes Love the Halloween costume ideas! Dr. Who and Amy Pond!
The new season starts soon I think. Should be interesting to see where the new doctor takes it.

I am leaving for a hiking / camping vacation on Monday so no running next week. I am scaling back my miles this month because of that.
10/1 = (will try to squeeze a few miles in before I leave)
10/2 = vacation
10/3 = vacation
10/4 = vacation
10/5 = vacation
10/6 = vacation
October goal miles = 120 / 0 miles-to-date
Upcoming Races:
10/27 = Hill Country Halloween Half Marathon
11/22 = Georgetown Turkey Trot
1/26/19 = Miami Tropical 5K
1/27/19 = Miami Marathon
3/10/19 = ZOOMA half (potentially)9 -
Monthly question.
1) With holiday's coming up and the return of cooler or warmer weather. What's your stragedy mitigating the particular challenges you face these last few months of the year?
These next few months will be heaven compared to the last few months. The temps are FINALLY dropping a little bit.
2) pretend for a moment your 8, unless you really are dressing up, then dish.... What are you going to be for Halloween?
Wait..... I am not 8?
I love Halloween and I work as a children's librarian. This year we are throwing a massive Harry Potter party at the library. I really want to dress up as Hagrid but I am so short I don't think I can pull it off. I might be more believable as Dobby the House Elf. LOL

Welcome @unchainedzulu @SarahRuth42 @emmab0902 @smaloch1852
Good to see you back @hanlonsk! I was missing you. I keep having dream with random MRC runners in them. Last night it was @Katharmonic... She was an older sister-type (i was in my 20's just had the twins) and she was helping me get situated. So random. Guess i get a little attached to yall.
Newbies, the monthly question is a way for us to get to know one another in a serious or goofy way. Jump on in there, don't be shy! We won't bite.... unless it's Halloween!
answers to my own questions.
1) my particular challenges as the weather gets colder... a) Daylight hours really. I think I will try splitting my runs up this month, through the rest of the year. Two miles or so at lunch time and a few more after work. I think this will give me the opportunity to add miles and recover/prevent injury as well as avoid Taco Casa everyday for lunch. b) Food. PIE. Although I've done better the last few years, bet this is the year I do great. At church today something in my head said "your body is a temple, not a trash can"... ok universe, i get it... i need to quit crying about it and take control. c) I hate holidays. All ya'll have families and sip hot coco, look at dumb lights and love one another. *fart on that* I tend to dwell on what I don't have, typical holiday depression type crap. So my plan is to take advantage of our new priest and confession. (not overly spiritual here, just duh dummy- go connect with someone that has to listen and is free. I am married to a counselor, but... DH doesn't wanna hear me wine... haha! oh have some wine? perhaps! )
2) wow! ya'll are creative. I always had to be a ghost or a hobo...or a poor kid. But if i could be 8 for a night, think I'd like to be a nun... with a gun. haha! I don't know. I'm trying to be creative here... I still run and hide from outside when a car drives by, doubt I'd go anywhere. ohh, maybe i could be a runner! Wait! I wanna be a Vampire ninja runner!7 -
Okay, I'm in! This month as a walker, next month may be cool enough here to run. I am going to set my goal for 90 miles, and a stretch goal for 120.
Monthly Questions:
1) With holiday's coming up and the return of cooler or warmer weather. What's your strategy mitigating the particular challenges you face these last few months of the year?
This month requires no changes. Normally temps are in the mid 50's to low 60's at this time, but mother nature hasn't kicked summer in the butt yet, so I'll be seeing 80's in the first week of October.
2) pretend for a moment your 8, unless you really are dressing up, then dish.... What are you going to be for Halloween?
I have been told that I should enter the costume contest at work with my Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or fencing gear. They might frown upon the blade with the fencing gear...7 -
Taper starts for me next weekend so I think I'll only get 100km this month.
No run today, it's a scheduled rest day. However, I would normally try and do a few kilometres the day after an event but instead I am sitting here, procrastinating, feeling like death, as my youngest has kindly passed on her vomiting bug to me. I would go back to bed but I have work to do. I'm also confused as to weather the aching muscles are running induced or viral. Yes to both no doubt.
Oh, yeah, and today's the first day of the school holidays so I have children to supervise/fights to break up.
Kill me now.10 -
My only real goal this month is to get healthy. Going to the doc Tuesday for a real diagnosis on my right leg. Been nursing it for too long and running with pain for too many months. Hopefully I won't miss my 15K race on Oct. 21 in Peachtree City, GA. My marathon plan has me doing about 100 miles this month, but I'm sure that I will be scaling it back these first couple weeks. So no mileage goal. Just hoping doc doesn't say NO running at all.13

@Elise4270 Thanks for setting up the October challenge!
@Scott6255 Fingers crossed for you on Tuesday...hope all goes well.My husband has a fez, bow tie and suspenders.
At the end of this month, I'm scheduled to be on-call again for a week, so I'll make that my down-week. I've also built up enough of a base over the summer to start really focusing on more quality runs now that I'm a little over four months out from the marathon and the temps are starting to drop (a little). So with the emphasis on quality over quantity, I'll put down 250 miles for this month, but that's just an arbitrary number and not the true goal from this point onwards.

Hi Everyone! Long-time lurker here, but I decided it was about time I joined in on the action. I'm Amirah, and I officially started running this past April. Using c25k, I built up my endurance to the point where I can now run about 4 miles without stopping. I actually just competed in my first 5k race last saturday (and it was awesome!). I've started the bridge to 10k app, and am currently training for my first ever 10k on thanksgiving day.
So, as for goals, I'm gonna aim for 60 miles this month. It may be a stretch, but I have faith in me haha16
