How do you measure lettuce in cups? The package says it is 5 ounces. Do you get a measuring cup and just smash it in there?!

Lettuce is a lot of water. Who cares. Take 10 and you're good.0

I chop or tear mine up pretty fine and then put it in my measuring cup. I don't smash it down, but I add a little over for good measure until it falls into the bowl0
-
I just guess...that looks like 2 cups...ish...since lettuce is so low cal you will be fine!! I'm pretty sure you could eat 2 whole heads of lettuce a day on top of your allotted calories and you would still lose!0

I start the tape measure at the stalk and wrap in around the fattest part at the top   :bigsmile:0

For some reason, this just really cracked me up! I guess I have never thought about it, I don't measure it. :laugh:0

If it says a cup, I take 3. Lettuce isn't something I generally worry about.0
-
I eyeball my lettuce but don't measure it. Its like 10 calories in a cup so I wouldn't stress0

Well good. I'll put that silly measuring cup away for now. :happy:0

I just had the same question about measuring lettuce. What I ended up doing was looking at my package of Romaine Hearts. The serving size said 85 grams. Then I used my nutritional scale and measured my lettuce in a 2 cup measuring cup until it came to 85 grams (not including the weight of the measuring cup). It worked out to 2 cups packed! I wasn't harsh with it, and had already gave it a wash with water and a little vinegar which makes your lettuce crisper, so didn't have a problem with it bruising.0

I didn't know lettuce had calories until coming on this website. Honestly... I don't count them. A water filled vegetable, eat to your hearts content.0
-
That's one of those things you can kind of guesstimate. I don't bother to measure the lowest calorie vegetables.0
-
but for the rest of your foods, I suggest getting a food scale. I love mine0

Don't pack your lettuce into a cup.
It will bruise.0 -
You can be off by about 200% and it only matter 5-10 calories...just saying.0
-
I never even give lettuce a second thought. I truly can say I did not get fat from eating lettuce. it was all the crap I was putting on the lettuce and the fattening stuff I ate along side the the salad.0

It's just lettuce......I don't think I've ever measured lettuce.0

I don't measure lettuce, spinach, or raw onion or bell pepper slivers, it's too inconsequential and I frankly can't be bothered to. I just estimate.
Too bad that doesn't work as well with slices of ooey-gooey cheesy pepperoni pizza with all the fixins...0 -

pretty much this. It's almost nothing. I'd put it in so i know I had some., But I wouldn't bother about the calorific value. Unless it was deep fried lettuce.0 -
I either estimate or use a food scale.0
-
You could measure it and be super concerned if you got it right. Or you could just not bother with it because it's just lettuce. Or you could weigh it with a food scale.0
-
I just lightly put it in the cup.. mashing it in there would be cheating and would be more then calories obviously ( being serious here ) Just because it's lettuce doesn't mean it shouldn't be counted or measured.0

Yes then it will get mad at you.
Especially if it suffers from Hemophilia.0 -
If it says 5 ounces of lettuce you'd want to use a food scale, not a measuring cup.0
-
If it's enough for a sandwich, I call it a cup. If it's enough for a small salad, I'll call it two cups. But it's so low cal, it's almost pointless to log it.0

I break each piece off carefully into the exact same size pieces. Then I measure one piece at a time and add all of those numbers together. Then, if there is any lettuce remaining in my salad bowl, I make equal pieces out of the leftovers and weigh each piece. Then, you got it, add those numbers together. And then I subtract that number from the initial weigh-in. This is the number I log.
Works every time. Consistency is key here.0
