I saw someone mention coolsculpting. I wouldn't recommend that. A friend of mine had it done and while it worked for a little bit they told her after the last appointment "just continue to watch your weight because any fat you put on will go directly to the abdomen (what they worked on)." Sure enough she got hurt at work and gained a few pounds while she wasn't able to be active and every pound she gained she said went right to the areas they worked on.
That's part of why I didn't go forward with CoolSculpting after I had an evaluation done. I read online that they were quick to blame *any* issues on the patient and supposed weight gain -- even when the patient's weight had remained the same. I decided that if I was going to spend almost as much on CoolSculpting to see the same results as lipo -- because in most cases, one round won't take care of it -- I was going to save my money for lipo and make sure that the fat got sucked out.
I have no issue maintaining my weight, but I'll be danged if some provider is going to blame *me* for their technique not working like the marketing says it will.2 -
1 in 5000.. every 2 to 3 years someone dies for any given doctor. Not the kind of odds i would put my life on.6

I've had lipo on my hips when I was a similar BMI to you a good few years ago, I felt like my 'love handles' were HUGE compared to the rest of me which seemed more in proportion. I don't remember my weight changing (if it did it was only slight) but it definitely changed my shape so I was pleased with that. However I've since lost weight and now I don't carry much weight on my hips. So I'm not sure if that was from losing weight or the lipo. But I've still got more to lose (esp bum/thighs) so I think it probably has helped keep it off my hips? Anyway, whatever you decide good luck! Just make sure if you go ahead do your research and be prepared for pain!2

How do you know that...5 Lbs for me is the difference between a flat stomach and no love handles to a bit of a belly and love handles. The difference at 180 vs 185 is pretty significant for me where my midsection is concerned.
Because the last 5lbs didn't, and nor did the 5lbs before that.
I've lose inches off my arms and legs and back, but not as much around my stomach, the area I'm most conscious of. As we all know, you can't spot reduce weight, and because of genetics/ biology we all carry weight in different areas. In my family, almost all of the women have slim arms and legs and big bellies, and I'm similar.
If I dieted very diligently and exercised for the next 6-12 months I could probably achieve the same results, but that's not what this thread is about.10 -

That's the right choice for you then. A 0.02% chance wouldn't effect my decision. I do more dangerous things every day, like travel in cars and cross streets.9 -

Yes, from everything I've read it's not a weight loss procedure so much as a contouring one. What you're talking about in terms of being more proportional is exactly what I'm looking for - I'm relatively happy with all the rest of me, and that's partly why I feel like my stomach makes me look so frumpy, I look like someone who has given birth twice or three times and I haven't. I had a really poor lifestyle in my early 20s - heavy drinking, drugs and a very poor diet. I left that life behind almost five years ago now and I've made a lot of progress, I just feel like my body needs a jumpstart to recover the figure I should have!
In my teens I was naturally very slim, and I don't think the weight I put on was so much about metabolism slowing down as it was the poor lifestyle. Even today, I find it relatively easy to maintain weight, it's just shifting it and specifically from that stomach area that's hard.6 -
Not firsthand, but by mom had it done about 15 years ago. It barely made a difference right after and it all came back with weight gain.5

She was not a smoker or a drinker. She was 32 when she died. She was actually on the thin side of normal. I remember thinking "she doesn't need lipo!". She went to a board certified plastic surgeon in Colorado. She was in good shape and exercised regularly. It was really an enormous shock to her family and friends. I'm not trying to convince you away from it necessarily but I agree with most here when they say to at least get to a normal BMI before you decide. I started at 5'4" and 170 lbs (BMI 29.2) and am now 130 lbs (BMI 22.3). I am pretty happy where I am now (confident enough to wear a bikini for the first time in 15 years) but even I would love to lose another 5-10 pounds. You never know where those next 5 pounds will come from.18

I will leave this thread for you.
@VUA21 had a tummy tuck plus liposuction. Unfortunately she hasn't been around since October.

Oops, just seen she was logged in earlier today. Maybe she will chime in.5 -
My mom just had some Lipo as a “touch up” to fix some issues after her breast reconstructions last summer. They did her initial reconstruction using abdominal tissue, so she basically got a tummy tuck in order to remake the breasts. When she went in to get a minor repair done on one breast, the doc convinced her that he should repair the far ends of the abdominal inscision. He felt they kind of stuck out instead of laying flat and she had said at one point that they would rub funny on her pants. So he did lipo to help the scars lay flat. She got great results. She was amazed at how a “small” procedure had her in so much pain but it was only for a day or two, the bruising was quite extensive though so be prepared for that if you go through with it. Her scars now lay flat and she is happy with her healing and results. Her situation is obviously different in that she was not necessarily aiming to lose weight or change the way her body looks(she has been about a size 14 for as long as I can remember), but she immediately noticed a difference in how some of her clothing fit and had to put some small darts in the waistbands of pants to keep them from gaping.2

OP, I'll chime in with my personal experience. I had liposuction done a few years ago, although not on my stomach. I thought it would rid me of the unhappiness and self-conscious feelings about my appearance. Guess what? It hasn't. I still struggle with wearing a swimsuit and shorts. My suggestion is to think about how it would impact your life if you still don't like how you look afterwards.23

Yep. Had to take time off for stress. Needed a break from everything.15 -
I had liposuction when I had my tummy-tuck. Turns out that fat loss isn't only uneven on the body as a whole, but also uneven side to side. I had the lipo done in order to even out my flanks. As I had it done with a tummy-tuck, I'm not sure about the difference in appearance, but I can tell you that the lipo areas healed a lot slower, were more painful, and is still evening out (90% smoothed out) as it "honeycombs" the fat.5

Totally get the time out. You had a few heavy duty months, and that isn't including just living life.
Thanks for popping in.

I get that, but a 5lb weightloss from all over my body wouldn't make a huge difference to my overall body composition. That was my point. 5lbs directly removed from my stomach would be a much more dramatic effect on my appearance.
The thing is, you're not going to lose weight evenly through out your overall body.
You're carrying extra FAT in your mid-section, not all over your body.
Why not lose 10 pounds ! ? What's the worse that can happen? Might be pleasantly surprise with your results.
And you can put the surgery money towards something else. Win win situation.

Some people are just so egotistical. I've made it so clear that I'm not looking for and don't want advice on weightloss, but people just can't let it go. Even though several other people have already said this, for some reason you felt like it had to be said again Why? That's a rhetorical question, it's clear why.
Thank you to those of you who have spent time answering my questions, it's been very helpful.33 -
Wow, you're rude.39

Wow, you're rude.
You're absolutely entitled to hold that opinion. I think I've been pretty polite to people who have throughout this thread ignored me as I asked them more than once not to give their opinions on my weightloss journey. I think the people who have insisted on giving their opinions anyway are pretty rude - it's all subjective.
I'm very grateful to the women who have shared their experiences, positive and negative, with lipo. That's all I was looking for, and it's been helpful to hear from people who have gone through it.
Hope the rest of you have a good weekend.19 -

I had liposuction when I was 22 (50 now) Suction was on my behind and legs.At the time it got me what I wanted a smaller lower frame. It was out of proportion with my legs and upper body. And as I gained weight over the years pretty much all of it came back, but I have to admit better proportioned than before.
I was 6 weeks in a super tight pair of pants. I was black and blue and I was in pain and had a terrible time to get over the anaesthetic.
Was it worth it. At the time I though so, Now looking back Not so sure.16 -
@katie1234
.....as I stated prior on that I did have liposuction. Remember, liposuction IS SURGERY, that means anesthesia and a surgeon. That means it can run several thousand on its own. If a "doctor" is offering lipo for significantly less RUN!!!!! Make sure that any cosmetic procedure is done by a licensed PLASTIC surgeon.9 -
My sister had liposuction - she had to have it a second time because the area that got lipo'ed was lumpy after she recovered.
How old are you? By your nasty responses telling everyone on a message board (that is about calorie counting and weight loss, not liposuction) how to post, and rudeness, I would guess about 17-18?22 -
Check out CoolSculpting. No surgery, non-invasive. The final results take months to show but they are quite drastic in some cases.3

My age is mentioned in my OP. I don’t think I’ve been nasty to anyone, I’ve stated clearly what I’m looking for advice on - lots of people keep trying to give me advice on things I haven’t asked about, and I have asked them not to do that. It’s called being assertive and most adults should be able to do it. If I’m not mistaken this is your first post on this thread and you have done nothing but name call.
I’ve found a lot of the responses hugely judgemental, people have made fun of some of my responses, you’ve called me nasty for asking people to stay on topic (in line with this forum’s stated rules), someone else called me rude and someone else said it was lazy.
But sure, I’m the bad guy here because I made the point that pushing advice on someone that they don’t want is egotistical. It is. If we were sitting in a cafe and I said two or three times that I didn’t want anyone’s opinion on my weight and you gave it anyway, that would absolutely be considered rude, and no one except maybe my 89yo grandma would do that.
In general, I try to stay away from anonymous forums for this exact reason.21 -

Thanks for this. If you were happy at the time I think you should try not to doubt yourself now. I think the surgery techniques have advanced now to the point where you don’t come out black and blue.
I have a consultation on Monday and a therapy appointment on Tuesday and I’m going to make the decision after both of those.13 -

I’m single, and don’t have kids. I earn enough that I can afford the surgery without it putting my finances too far out of whack. It’ll mean skipping a big vacation this year is all, and I’m fine with that.
The consultant I’m going to is quoting €2,500+ which sounds about right from what I’ve heard. I’ve read his reviews on google and yelp and of course I’ll be making sure he’s fully qualified. I’m also going to ask my friend who is a dermatologist in a nearby hospital about him as the community is fairly small and she will probably know him/ know of him.12 -
OP, Google and Yelp reviews don’t mean JACK SQUAT! Discount them. Rely on personal references (like your derm friend), NOT from people who may not even be real on THE FREAKING INTERNET! There are all kinds of horror stories about unqualified plastic surgeons. Sorry if that’s not what you want to hear.

I didn’t read all the comments. When I lost weight years ago I tried on a bikini when I still had about 10ish pounds to lose. My stomach still looked a little pudgy and I thought I would never get a flat tummy. But once I lost a few pounds it seriously went away!! Just keep trying. You’ll feel better. Also, I’ve heard that after liposuction your fat will show up in different places if you gain weight! Like, your arms specifically!! You don’t want a slim waist and fat arms do you??! Lol.10
