@dewit - Welcome! I think you will find there are several here who run and bike or bike and run and some track both. You can certainly set goals for both if you want. There are also several moms and dads trying to fit running around their family time. Some run before the kids are up or after they are in bed or even take the kids with them. Also there are runners of all levels and abilities, fast, slow in-between and some run really far or just a mile or so.
I think you will find lots of motivation, encouragement and ideas here!3 -
Oh I'd definitely sign up for a Danish Dash. In fact I'm signed up for a race in April and they've asked if people would be interested in a Donut Dash. What kind of dumb question is that? Hell yeah, I'm interested.8

I'm running a Hot Chocolate 15k in February. At the finish you get cup of melted gourmet (at least they claim) chocolate and marshmallows to dunk in it.
My favorite run to date was at the Red Hare brewery in Atlanta. The after beer was the BEST BEER I have ever drank in my entire life!
I love runs with rewards6 -
Two lots of just over 3km today, (to and from work), rather than original plan to do 13k after work. Combination of under-eating today and unexpectedly having tomorrow off meant I decided just to run home and forgo the extra 10k. Bonus is I can now go out for this weeks long run (18k) tomorrow instead, (as had planned for Tuesday but stuff got in the way).
Otherwise very little to report, except that now definitely won't hit monthly target but still hoping for around 140km.
5/11: 16k [Easy long run with hills]
6/11: 7k [Difficult - coming down with cold]
11/11: 16.7k [Long run, with last 7km at MP]
14/11: 12.6k [7km easy followed by 5k at MP]
15/11: 7.3k [Easy commute run (with backpack)]
16/11: 7.2k [10km planned but cut short as tired]
21/11: 3.5k + 3.4k [Run to/from work]
Total: 73.7km (Target: 185km)
Recent Races
07-Oct: Southend 10k Classic [50:07 - PB]
Upcoming Races:
14-Apr-2019: Brighton Marathon

I don't know HOW you manage to run with back spasms. I can barely walk for a few days when mine goes out. Major kudos!2 -

I have learned it really makes for some fancy steps ever so often, particularly if the spasms hits mid stride. I do feel this has actually helped me with my breathing and changing/varying my stride.

Got my race packet and bought two long sleeved running shirts for ten bucks. And I got the LAST PACKAGE OF LETTUCE in Cordova! Seriously, there was one giant package of baby spinach and a small box of arugula and that was it. Everything else has been removed from the shelves or was sold out.
In other news, I noticed while I was out that my chest felt tight and had a noticeable catch in it. Worried that I was coming down with something. Got home, suddenly chest feels fine. Looked up the news, and oh... it's the smoke from California.
Look at that pathway, it goes right through Memphis!
I have mild asthma which is fine as long as I avoid allergens and sleep with an air filter running. It's been so long since I had an issue that I had forgotten what it felt like. Outside the horizon is visibly hazy. If it's bad enough here for me to feel it within an hour in a car, not exercising, I can't even begin to imagine what it must be like for the poor people nearer to the fires, much less those in the fire zone. It's just terrifying to think what it must be like to have asthma in California right now.

I haven't had any time to post, but I did get caught up on the reading and did a lot of laughing and liking, etc. Sorry to all those on the injured list, and congratulations on the wonderful race results!
So much drama in my life at the moment. Two friends had a huge blow-up at book club (not really about the book) on Monday, turning it into fight club. I tried to remain neutral and defuse the situation and ended up getting texts from both sides until the wee hours of the morning. Note to self: mind your own business. And it is nearing the end of the semester for my son. Four papers and a presentation piling up on him combined with anxiety and depression, and I anticipate a rough couple of weeks ahead for our household.
Today, I was slower than I felt. Must have been all my rain gear. Haven't quite figured out what to wear for the lower temperatures yet. I was super happy it was above 5C this morning, even with the rain. Monday was -2C, so I ended up waiting till it went above 5C to do my run. If the ground is wet and it is below 5, I seem to hit ice spots and I feel I'm going to get injured. No slick steps at all today.
It was very windy on the return, and I had to wonder if it had been on my back for the first half or perhaps it just picked up when I turned around (most likely, right?). I also wanted to skip the 10 min cool down, and I'm so proud of myself that I finished. I was able to recognize that if I skipped it, I would feel as if I had failed this plan I'm following, and it would be harder to finish the next run and may quickly lead to quitting altogether.
Nov 19 - 3.21 mi and lower body strength
Nov 20 - upper body strength
Nov 21 - 3.96 mi (20 min w/u, 2 x 10 min tempo, 5 min walk, 10 min cd)11 -

The smoke drift is pretty incredible. I know we get a lot here (So CA) and that @RunsOnEspresso does too but never thought about where it went beyond AZ. My husband has really bad allergies and asthma and has been wheezing and coughing for weeks between the dust from the winds and the smoke. His meds help some but there really isn't much we can do besides running the electronic air cleaner and keeping the house closed up which he hates!2 -

Family arriving so no run today... not sure on next run. Le Sigh.3

In February, I bought a waist belt to keep my phone in on my runs. Loved it - used it to travel as well. When I got up to Wisconsin, the clasp broke! I bought a cheap Walmart arm band that is actually not bad, but not what I really want.
I know with longer mileage comes the need to hydrate, especially in warmer weather. What are the differences/benefits in the waist belts vs hand held ones? I did speak a bit to the guy @ the LRS (in cycling LBS is Little Bike Shop, so...Little Run Shop?) when I picked up my race packet to the Turkey Trot tomorrow & he did advise me of the added weight of the water. I do like having hands free, but I don't want to have a bunch of weight again around my waist! I do still like to have my phone with (music and safety).
There was a hand held bottle there that seemed decent, but wasn't 100% sure which was "better". (waist or hand)

No, my elephants are ears (plants). They are very heavy and I just call them my elephants. I do A LOT of yard work around my home.

So if you are only talking about 1 small or medium sized bottle then waist verse hand is going to be personal preference. I like having my hand free to catch myself if I happen to trip over the thin air or have to fight a dog or whatever.
If you want to carry MORE than a waist belt, or backpack is required. So it comes to down to your personal tastes and how much water you need.0 -
@dreamer12151 - I don't like having things in my hands or on my arms (took me a bit to get used to my watch for running) so I had one of the Fitletics belts for water bottles and my phone and anything else I needed to carry. You can modify how many bottles you want to carry which is nice. For me the only downside was that the bottles only come in one size. I would like to be able to have larger ones for longer runs but have managed ok with 2, one on each side of the pack. On the plus side they aren't super expensive and don't bounce.0

Yesterday's run was in the rain; it was a faster-paced run at an average of 7:32 min/mi, but not a full tempo-paced run...I knew that would be the price for Friday's hard effort, which is why that run won't happen again until well after race day.
Today was a recovery run in what I would call the first real cold snap of the season for this area. Obviously no where near as cold as the temps seen up in the northern states, but at 30F and with a wind chill that took the "feels-like" down to the teens, it was time to add a few more layers. The first part of the run was pleasant, with a brisk pace helping to pump the blood around. Then I met up with the group, and by group I mean one person...every one else bailed and figured bed was more appealing. By that point, it felt like the temps were dropping further, so we picked up the pace a little. After we had finished, I looked at the time and there was still time to get a little more distance in, so I ran a little more before heading back to the office.
Tomorrow is supposed to be a little cooler still, with temps dropping down to 24F and a real-feel of 17F, but it should be a faster run so it shouldn't feel anywhere near as cool as today felt.

I am about 424 posts behind so bear with me.
Just wanted to comment on your assessment of 30 degrees feeling cold. I last ran on Monday and the temperature here in Indy was 34 degrees and it felt great. However when I ran my half marathon earlier this month, it was 34 degrees and I was sitting in my heated car seat until time to walk to the starting line. It is amazing how quick one's body adapts to cooler and cold weather.
Anyway, I was thinking about that when I was running on Monday. Monday's run felt great....my goal was 6 miles but felt so great that I ran another mile. I have had a "fear and loathing" attitude toward running these last couple of weeks which I can't explain. Maybe it was the change of seasons or the stress of the holidays? Anyway, back at it again and back to loving running.
I am getting ready for work. My holiday this year is Thanksgiving and also New Years of next year.....grrrrr. We will get to see my mom and sister this weekend.
I hope that you all have a wonderful holiday and I will see you on the back end.7 -
Just thought I would share this here - it is a shot of LA traffic last night from one of the TV traffic reporters. Tonight is supposed to be worse! The view of it from the air is kind of pretty but I am thankful we don't have to be out in it!
