1118-10.1k total-39.2k, goal-100k
Finished the 10k race at the Shanghai Marathon yesterday.
Obligatory bling:
It was very crowed - the clock said 16 minutes had gone by when I arrived at the starting line. I kept elbowing people when they tried to pass me, and tangents were pretty much impossible.
Atmosphere was great. I kept trying to speed up so I could read what people's t-shirts said Weather was great - about 15 degrees C (60F) and raining just a tiny bit. The wind picked up and it started pouring about an hour after I finished, so most of the marathoners I knew either achieved a PB because it was too cold to slow down, or got a DNF.
Oh and I saw this guy behind me at the finish line.
He might need a faster dinosaur.
I love everything about this (except the DNFs).2 -

I think international marathons tend to do that. A bunch of bigger races here do the same. They want to attract people from many countries, and English tends to be the common language. I'm so glad I learned it from childhood!7 -

Stopped to pet a dog-friend, took my time on slippery spots and kind of felt like I was lazy-running... but got it done!

4 cold 36F miles this morning (I know.... balmy compared to a lot of you but that's pretty cold in Texas), and it was a slow warm-up mile, but ended up not being so bad. That's almost always the case....I feel so much better after a run. Guess it is needed therapy.
Nice 10K @noblsheep!8 -
I completed my 5th week, 1st run of my Fat to First Mile program yesterday on a balmy 29 degree Maine day. I overestimated how much to wear but not by too much. I ended my run carrying my jacket. It was a harder run than my past weeks, partly because my run intervals jumped by a full minute, but also because the cold air stiffens up my knee (any advise for this out there?) and I'm not used to breathing the colder air longer than just to and from my car. I got it done though! I also signed up to work with a personal trainer at my gym to up my cross training. Tonight is my first session - wish me luck!

Glad you had a good 10k @noblsheep! Love the dinosaur guy.
@debrakgoogins great job on finishing up week 5 in the cold. I don't have much advice about the knee other than making sure to do some warming up before running, maybe another layer to keep warm (I wonder if a hand warmer type thing would help too?), but good luck working with your trainer tonight. Maybe strengthening will help your knee too. I've just loved doing more strength/cross-training with a trainer, which was a total surprise to me because I actively hated working out at the gym before.

Gave some thought to making today and Thursday rest days, but cloudy, foggy, and 35 degrees F got me out today for my scheduled recovery run. Will rest tomorrow, and see what the rest of the week brings.4 -
@noblsheep - that guy's dinosaur costume is probably the best I've ever seen! That is absolutely hilarious.
@MegaMooseEsq - sounds like your stress level is sky high right now. Hang in there.
I'm a slow runner and I probably place myself further back than necessary because I don't want to be "that person" that gets in the way! I've found that placing myself near the back actually tends to open up more space anyway.
I've been asked by a new acquaintance to teach her how to run. She's asked me a few times about running and - you know how it is - my face lights up and suddenly I can't stop yapping about it. When she asked me to "teach" her I didn't know what to say. How do you teach somebody to run? So I told her about the C25K program - which she's already downloaded onto her phone and we've agreed that in the spring, I'll help her through it. I'm intimidated by this and excited all at the same time.
Progress for Sedona is coming along great. I'm really liking the program I chose (suggested by someone on this thread - Higdon's Intermediate #2)
So far - 9/64 complete - not including today's anticipated 6 mile run. It's only 28 F outside right now - but it won't get much warmer than that so I might as well just do it. At least there's not much wind.10 -

Just tell her the core of if it is to go: left, right, left right, and repeat. Make sure she never does right, left, right left, or it will be a disaster. That is really all you need to know.

A short 5.15 km Sunday morning group run. Out on the Westbrook rd and returned on the bush trails around the bottom of our ski hill - legs are still a little hammered out from the 7 Peaks Challenge and Adult Swim club.

I told a friend that I got a running coach and she said she could be my coach. Her plan? Run run run! And when I told her I had that part she said left right left right. Gotta love non-running friends 😂5 -

So THAT'S my problem. I've been doing left, left, right, right. No wonder I'm so slow...5 -

Well duh! Slow down and focus on the order. If you do not get the basics right, you will cripple your entire career!3 -

There's a couple I've seen at several local 5ks who SKIP the whole distance! So left, left, right, right can work, it's just much, much harder.5 -

Great race @noblsheep ! I love the international medal!0

Just checked the weather for my 5 mile turkey trot on Thursday and holy *kitten* it’s gonna be cold. A high of 21 degrees but will most likely be between 10 and 15 degrees so I will most certainly be freezing my *kitten* off! Guess I’m gonna have to invest in a warm running jacket for Thursday and hope I don’t get frostbite.2

I'm afraid I haven't kept up much with this thread, as it moves faster than I can keep up these days.
I did 3.97 miles on Sat. in Tulsa at the Turkey Mountain urban wilderness area.
On Sun., I did the Route 66 Marathon with the optional detour. It was supposed to be 26.5 miles, but of course I had 27.37 due to imperfect tangents. At one point, I took my jacket off and accidentally stopped my Garmin. By the time I noticed and restarted it, I had at least an extra 0.12 miles. This is based on getting to the mile 4 marker with 3.88 miles by Garmin's count. In reality, it was probably close to an extra 0.2 miles based on pace at that point and the 2:03 total difference between Garmin and chip time. So I probably actually ran closer to 27.5 or 27.6 miles. I'll update my ticker based on Garmin, though.

Get fitted for decent shoes, sounds like you have two lefts (or two rights)1 -

My running plan calls for approx 105 miles for the month ( I do long runs by time instead of distance). So far, I've logged 62.1 which is on target for my plan:
11.1: 3.5 @ 8:09/M (3.5) Pace Run
11.2: 7.2 @ 9:46/M (10.7) Long Run
11.4: 4.0 @ 9:04/M (14.7) Easy Run
11.5: 3.5 @ 8:27/M (18.2) Fartlek
11.6: 4.0 @ 9:20/M (22.2) Easy Run
11.7: 8.3 @ 9:35/M (30.5) Long Run
11.9: 3.5 @ 8.25/M (34) Pace Run
11.11: 4.0 @ 9:06/M (38) Easy Run
11.12: 4.0 @ 9:00/M (42) Intervals
11.13: 8.1 @ 9:56/M (50.1) Long Run
11.15: 4.0 @ 8:19/M (54.1) Pace Run
11.16: 4.0 @ 9:19/M (58.1) Easy Run
11.18: 4.0 @ 9:09/M (62.1) Easy Run
I have completed 46 "scheduled" runs since Sept 16. Sometimes I have to swap runs around within the week due to my schedule but I've completed 2 easy, 1 pace, 1 long, and 1 either fartlek/tempo/interval run each week for 9, started week 10 yesterday.6 -

@PastorVincent I go right, left, right, left but I'm in the southern hemisphere, so it's back to front here, bit like how water goes down the drain the opposite direction.8 -
Well got out this morning and it started hailing - we are supposed to be going into summer, not winter! I was not dressed for hail. I had a tank top on. It was freezing! So I turned around, then told myself I was a wimp, turned and started running again, and the hail doubled down. So I turned for home. Got home and it stopped so I kept going but by then I'd lost my mojo and desperately needed the bathroom so gave up. 3k this morning but I got out!
Travelling tomorrow for a wedding. So not sure if I'll run tomorrow. I'm calling this week a rest week. Lol7 -
@noblsheep well done on your 10k!0
-
@kgirlhart - I am sorry the attire for the run was annoying but you could look at it as a NSV (looser clothes are awesome!) and an opportunity for some retail therapy (new running gear is awesome!).
@noblsheep - Congratulations! Great bling!! Also love the Dino costume, it is one of the best I have seen!
@polskagirl01 - I have been so surprised by the knowledge of English across Europe and in Latin America as well. My SIL learned it in school in Luxembourg along with several other languages and her father and brother were fluent as they used it in their business dealings with American companies. Other than in the French country side pretty much everywhere I went people wanted to speak English with me so they could 'practice' especially (surprisingly) in the small villages.
@biketheworld - I think it was @polskagirl01 who recently 'trained' a friend with starting to run and may be able to give you some tips. I believe she had her friend use C25k and they ran together to keep her friend accountable.
@mbaker566 - your pups are too darn cute! Love the foster's face. He would be so hard to resist!
@amirahdaboss - just keep moving and wear gloves
@midwesterner85 - what is the optional detour? Pictures? Bling?3 -
Welcome back @dkabambe! As @Scott6255 mentioned we are still a very busy, chatty group. I do think we are now maybe more international with some folks in Europe, Asia and Australia.
Congratulations on finishing the London Marathon!!
Welcome to the group @kevsangb - we have several who are following C25K too.
@ddmom0811 - yah I couldn't give up lifting, I just love feeling strong and being able to do things people don't expect me to be able to do We even worked it in when I broke my arm as well as when I had the surgery on my hand. Those times it was all lower body focused and this time more core and upper body!
@Beka3695 - I love having a race to work toward and the feeling of accomplishment afterwards!
@sarahthes - I am right there with you on the retail therapy! I spent a couple of hours yesterday reading up on different shoes to replace my Topo's but have not found any yet. I really want to keep in the 0 drop realm but other than Altra's which I have a love hate relationship with, most of the traditional running shoes the doctor would like me to use, seem to have 10-12 drop.
@youngcaseyr - you might look into doing some exercises while you are resting, to strengthen your hips and glutes. It made a huge difference for me at least in getting rid of a nagging hamstring issue.
@shanaber what kinds of hip and glute exercises did you do? I thought I resolved my hamstring issues over the spring and summer but I might need to try something else since it seems to have resurfaced as a compound hamstring/knee problem.0 -
@midwesterner85 - great job on going the extra mile on your marathon ! You are almost in 'ultra' status now!0
