What a pleasure it was to be able to take full strides and not have to worry about ice. The little back niggle I had developed last week pretty much went away today.
@ContraryMaryMary Congratulations on a great run!!!5 -
Haven't been on for several days - thought I could catch up with the posts - but 15 pages? I've missed you all!
Training for my next half is progressing - I didn't run much in October and it's amazing how sluggish my runs have been feeling. Hubs reminded me yesterday that I made the same comment when I started training in earnest for my last half and by the time it rolled around I was doing fine.
So - 7/64 training runs complete.
Next half - Feb. 2 - Sedona, AZ7 -

Today, or this morning at least, was not my day. And as much as I love trail running, it is not my specialty. I can run 13 miles no issues but put me on a trail and after a couple of miles I start getting dizzy. I think it might be the elevation or maybe vertigo? Next race I am going to try to look ahead more and see if it helps.

ContraryMaryMary wrote: »Oh @avidkeo I was thinking of you as I slogged up, up, and more up. I wished I was in Kerikeri. Definitely the most brutal run I’ve done. But so beautiful. Single track for about 90 percent, swing bridges, a tunnel (which was cool but meant I had to wear a head torch for the whole event), and really steep hills (well, two or three, the first being particularly long at about 7kms).
Got up at silly o’clock, collected two running buddies and headed south at 5:30am. Arrived at 8 with plenty of time for pit stops, chatting and last minute fueling. It was a beautiful sunny day - hot in the sun but pleasantly cool under the trees, where most of the track was.
Started at 9am on the flat through the gorge just a few meters above the river. Simply stunning scenery. Here was where the swing bridges and tunnel were (and day trippers). Then after about 4.5km we turned off that track and began climbing non-stop until about the 11km mark.
Annoyingly at about 7km my left calf started cramping and wouldn’t let me push off properly. Another runner kindly gave me a salt tablet which helped stop the cramping but the muscle was (and is) still sore.
After the mammoth up came a very steep and technical down. A bit scary. Fortunately it was pretty dry with only one truly treacherous muddy patch. Managed to roll my ankle at 13k but no real damage done fortunately. At 15k the up started again for a few k. Not a happy time. Legs were pretty tired. By the next downhill they began really protesting. Quads were shot. Bottom of hill had a river ford (nice to cool the feet) then a bit more up and down before getting to run the last 300-400 metres on the flat (hallelujah!).
In total we did 20.5k with 980 metres (that’s over 3000 feet) of elevation (watch unable to record properly due to terrain). Finished in 2:52:39.
Watch tells me I spent 38 minutes with my heart rate in zone 5 (never spent more than a minute there before). I truly had to work on that first massive hill (and I did run at least 95% of the time going up it).
Not sure I’ll do it next year. Possibly, but only if they promise the same dry conditions. More likely to head to Kerikeri to run with @avidkeo!!
Wow sounds like a weird fyn torture! I don't think I'd handle all those hills haha. I've actually tramped through there as a kid on school camps - so beautiful! Well done! Hope the ankle and muscles heal quick0 -
eleanorhawkins wrote: »@Avidkeo yay! So glad you enjoyed it! So....have you signed up for the next one yet? lol
I think my next one will be in July. Its heading into summer now so not a lot around for a bit. We have a local one in March but I've agreed to walk it with a friend1 -
Finally got outside this morning! They hadn’t cleared the sidewalks I usually run on of the 8 inches of snow we got the other day, so I had to switch it up by running a 3/4 mile loop around my neighborhood a bunch of times, which sucked. The good thing is I got in a bit of hill training as there’s a MASSIVE hill within that loop that goes on for about 0.4 miles, which I had a lot of fun running down and suffered going up 😂 the struggle is real
Edit: this is not the hill I’m talking about, I was just trying to get a good picture of the snow

Non - running update. Friday I had my cast taken off for good, my foot cleaned and my sutures removed. At some point before my sutures were removed I stretched my foot down and holy hell the wound hurt! It almost hurt as bad as the day of surgery.
The nurse removed the sutures, wrapped a bandage on it, and put me in a boot. She noticed that my foot was still a bit swollen and I admitted that I haven't been good about keeping my foot up and icing. I thought I was past that phase. She told me that there is a major nerve near the incision site and any inflammation would affect it.
The rest of the night that incision was screaming at me and I almost took an oxycodone before bed so I could sleep. I haven't had painkillers since the day of surgery. I ended up just taking Tylenol and did manage to sleep.
Thankfully I woke up with no pain and it's been good all day. That pain had me concerned so this is a relief!
So three more weeks with a boot. I can start putting weight on it Friday so I'll use my peg leg until then.
Slow and steady, I'm making progress!
61 days until I can run.19 -

Just for comparison, when I had the tendon in my thumb repaired it was almost three weeks before it would respond to commands - before that it was basically frozen due to inflammation and although I could feel it sort of twitch in response to wanting to move it, some sort of protective instinct kept it from responding. By the end of six weeks it was functioning more or less normally, and by the end of six months or so it was at full strength and fully responsive. Obviously a thumb is not a toe but it gives an idea of the recovery period for a detached tendon! Sounds like you are coming along nicely, hang in there.4 -
@ContraryMaryMary Sounds like a heck of a race! Well done!0

Sub 2hr HM, but never felt like I was in race mode. Just tried to keep it easy and consistent. When I was feeling a little sluggish I just concentrated on keeping good form, then felt better. Fueling was just about right...1/2 GU at 6.5 mi, then at 10 mi. Had some water with each, and a few sips of Gatorade between each.
With that run I have gone over 1,000 miles for the year (goal I set for myself in January). Furthest previous years have been under 800. And just so happens that puts me just over 5,000 miles for my 6 year running career. So pretty satisfied with how things are going. You would think after all that time I would have learned a thing or two, but when I stepped into the shower after the run, I realized I forgot Bodyglide!
@7lenny7 glad you are progressing well. You'll be out on the road before you know it.13 -
Thanks to those who answered. It wasn't as bad as I thought it was goin to be, honestly! Wasn't as cold as some of my other runs up here, but wetter, as I ran when it was snowing. I bought a pair of Merino wool socks I decided to wear over my running socks to help my feet stay warmer, and wow, did that help. I didn't have a pair of clear glasses with me (left them back south in my cycling bag), that would have helped. During the last mile, I took out my ear bud & just listened to the quietness & the snow crunching, was calm, beautiful. I did keep it slow, ran when I could, walked when I needed to, dodged the snowplow when I had to, and the longest distance I've ever gone is now in the books!

Last day in Boston and the weather was better this morning. It was 40 degrees F when I headed out. I slept in later than planned so just did an hour. It was a nice run - went along the Charles River and then saw some of the Boston University Campus, Fenway Park, a little bit of the Emerald Necklace and headed back to my hotel on a route that included the Boston Marathon finish line. Which I made sure to run across.
@BruinsGal_91 thanks for the tip about the park run. I didn't get to it this time, but some day when I'm back I would love to do that. Hope you had a good race.
Congrats @Avidkeo on your HM! You did kick butt! Glad you had fun.
@ContraryMaryMary congrats on a very tough race!
Good job @Scott6255 on your half today and your mileage for the year. When are you doing your marathon? Is it in the spring?
I am still killing some time in Boston before heading home tonight. Not eager to get back to at least 8 inches of snow. And somehow I need to figure out how to get the new things I just bought in my already stuffed full bag for the trip home. At least the new boots can go on my feet!

I got to try on a pair and for someone who pronates they are terrifying - like running on the blade of a skate. And they do feel like jumping up and down on a diving board. But I can see how they would be awesome for someone with solid running mechanics.
I don't have the pronation issue. But supposedly they make you faster. I saw a graph somewhere and I believe it's what the men were wearing when attempting to break 2 hours in the marathon.
Seems like a car would make me fast enough to break the 2 hours... and be a lot less work.
I will never break 2 hours for a half but I will take every advantage I can and if that means $250 shoes? I want to make sure it's worth it first. LOL
'Cept they were talking about two hours for the FULL marathon. Insane.
Oh I am aware. I am just saying I can't break it for a half as comparison of how slow I am!
One of my favorite quotes was from an unknown female runner the first year I ran the Rochester Half. On the old course, the half and full started 15 minutes apart in the same place, and ended in the same place; but the half ran a smaller loop than the full. There was exactly one professional runner in the local area, who was known for winning the full every year. He was an immigrant from Kenya.
So I'm walking toward the start line, behind a couple of female runners I don't know, and one says to the other, "You know you're almost done when the Kenyan passes you."10 -

11/17 – 14.09 paced run
November running total to date – 98.57
Nominal November mileage goal: 160 miles
Real Goals: Avoid injury. Run well in the Pete Glavin XC series. Have fun at the Syracuse Half and Race with Grace 10K. Build base toward the start of Boston training.
Today's notes – I had thought about cancelling today's paced run, but yesterday's run went so well I thought I could handle 10 miles. Then I got a couple people to pace; one only needed 8 miles, but the other needed the full 14. The weather was good for running, much like it was at the Syracuse Half; except for the snow on the ground today. I wore trail shoes because I wasn't sure whether roads and sidewalks would be clear. There were a couple of spots where I was glad of having the trail shoes, but I could have worked around them in road shoes.
Serendipity - there turned out to be a construction site port-a-pot at 9 miles, right where I needed one. Then I was good for the 14. Target pace was 8:30, brought it in at an 8:24 average, with a pause for the water stop and a pause for the port-a-pot. None of the mile splits were too terribly fast, so I'll count this as a good day for pace control.
The good news is, the sore hamstring felt perfectly normal for most of the run. I could still tell it wasn't 100% when doing post-run hamstring stretches, but it let me run. Now bring on the 8K XC tomorrow!

Solo 10k complete.
As I said before, this is my first 10k since the Peachtree on 7/4/18. I am HAPPY to say I was over 10 min less. I am telling myself that this was the 30 degree lower temp (63F vs 93F) and better humidity (35% vs 80%). But also, I was running ALONE and didn’t have the excitement to push me along.
This is a step in the right direction!
35 of 50 goal miles complete!

@rheddmobile that's good information to know, thanks. It's weird when my foot is in the boot or cast I have no qualms about flexing my foot but when it's out and I can see it I'm hesitant to move it, like I'm afraid the two tendons will come apart.
@Scott6255 nice job on the HM!
Well I didn't get out to run today but Kody did. I posted in on our local trail running group FB page and just threw it out there that Kody would love it if someone could take him for a run. Today a guy from our town but whom I've never met before came by and took him out for 6 miles. They both had a great time and he said he'd love to take Kody out again. He and I seemed to click and I suspect I'll be running with him when I'm back in the saddle. Kody is chillin' right now, taking a post run nap.13 -

So I am probably going to have to take a running break. My back is covered in welts from my shirt. A shirt I wore all last winter without issue. Every time I run it gets progressively worse. At this point even if I figured out what the issue was, there are so many welts that they would likely just keep reopening. Even if I was the immodest type it is not exactly shirtless weather out there.
So I do not know what I am going to do yet. Grr.8 -
