Ok I just have to vent. I'm watching revenge body with khloe Kardashian where she pairs overweight people up with trainers and nutritionists to lose weight. One contestant is being tortured with exercise as if that's all that is required to lose weight (when it's actually not required at all) AND the nutritionist is recommending butter in coffee!!! I'm about to freak out. Why is there so much misinformation out there?

I know but why make an overweight person think that that's the best way to lose? It's not. And yes its gross14 -
Because keto...even if it’s all about caloric surplus and ppl just believe the crap people tell them17

While I don't subscribe to that method, my hubby lost 50 lbs in 4 mos doing keto and having bulletproof coffee every morning. It actually is quite delicious and it kept him satiated for hours. Must froth with immersion blender, can't just stir in some butter.22

Anyone who thinks Khloe Kardashian's show is anything more than another celebrity money grab, or that she has any interest in anyone's wellbeing besides her own needs a reality check.31

He lost 50 lbs in 4 months by eating less calories than he burnt.
He did not need butter in his coffee to do it.
OP, I'm with you. The misinformation is infuriating but the truth doesn't make tv30 -

Because people watch the Kardashians to begin with?
I do watch my 600 pound life and I like how they note the time its been taking the people. They don't put it out there as a magic bullet to weight loss if a person gets the surgery, either. But the Kardashians? The only reality they know is in their pockets. And I'm not only talking about money.6 -

Some people have trouble getting cravings under control or eating in moderation so they need to do things to help, like having a protein or fat heavy breakfast. There's not just one way to go about losing weight. And there's no need to put down everything that doesn't agree with your own personal way of doing things.
I agree with you, though, OP. It sounds like they're being led down an unhealthy path for no reason.19 -
Reality TV : exercise 'til you puke. Eat whatever-brand-name sponsors the show and other fads. Get advice like "add butter to your coffee"
People want shortcuts (eat this, not that) and excuses (Oh I don't really have time to exercise like they do on TV)
Reality : Shop. Peel, chop, slice, dice, shred cook, weigh, portion. Eat. Get advice like "manage your hunger however works best for you"
Effective but not very exciting tbh.39 -
I wouldn’t watch any of that family, for anything.
But many people, myself included before MFP and getting helpful advice, are under the same misconception, that you have to exercise to lose weight.7 -
People still watch regular tv?
Seriously though... butter in coffee is gross to me, but I'm keto so I know a lot of folks do it on that diet. I just hope behind the scenes, they're explaining WHY eating such and such is ok. Doubt it though.
I hate reality weight loss shows. Most of those people are just going to gain it all back when they're back in their normal life b/c they're not being taught how to do things properly.7 -

I hear you. Our house cut cable earlier this year, and we don't miss it. I miss out on a few sporting events, but I've found more fulfilling things to fill that time.
Though not on keto, I've also been tempted to add some butter (I've also heard I should try coconut oil) to my coffee, just to see how it tastes.
Also, reality shows. Ugh.4 -

What makes you think that this isn't a good way for that person to lose weight? Weight loss comes from a caloric deficit not demonising foods.
Bulletproof Coffee, as it's called, may be an excellent choice for someone who finds fats filling and satisfying.4 -

Lol are you joking... I'm a major advocate for not demonizing foods. If anything thats why I cant stand the whole keto trend because all it does is demonize carbs and make people think that they need to live a miserable carb and sugar free life to achieve weight loss success. Most overweight people aren't even aware that weight loss is about a calorie deficit so they need to be taught this by their nutritionists ... not given revolting coffee with butter which trust me, nobody actually enjoys. Do you think an overweight person is actually going to enjoy coffee with butter in it as opposed to a piece of toast with avo.. or anything more filling and tasty? Weigt losa needs to be something that can be sustained long term and for the majority of people I highly doubt wasting 300 or so calories on butter coffee is a way of life22 -

Why butter, though? If you're satiated by fat, why not just regular cream?
It's a fad.21 -
It has to be butter from grass fed cows and coconut oil that's super duper $$$ with higher levels of certain fatty chain acids. If you care enough to Google there are detailed explanations online.
It is absolutely delicious! Not part of my plan, but hubby loved it. It's really, really delicious, creamy and lush kind of like a latte but different. Not sure why all the hate on this, to each their own!!20 -
Oh, and it must be frothed! Just adding a tbsp of butter is NASTY!8

If someone decides on their own that they love Bulletproof coffee and WANTS to use those calories for it, sure, whatever, just like someone can enjoy 200 cal of ice cream daily after dinner or the like.
It's pretending like it's some addition that makes the diet healthier or is necessary for the diet to work that is so absurd. Most obese people don't need to work to add more calories (or more fat) to the diet.
People go on about how BP coffee is SO filling -- for many it would not be. Beyond that, it's the same calories as plenty of far more nutrient-dense choices. I'd rather have black coffee and have those calories for later or, in the alternative, have a nutrient-dense breakfast (such as an omelet with lots of vegetables -- still pretty high fat and lower carb, but adds protein and fiber and nutrients, unlike a bunch of butter and/or coconut oil in coffee, blech).
But like I said, it's a taste preference, if you like the butter coffee as an indulgence I see nothing wrong with it, but the idea that it is something that it's important to add for dieting or for health is just mind-boggling, and it sounds like what the person on the show was pushing.13 -

Woah woah woah.. slow your roll there Judgey McJudgerson. You are doing a lot of assuming there and it's not pretty.
I totally understand not demonizing food, but don't rag on a diet b/c you don't like it. I'm keto and not "miserable" b/c I can't have carbs and sugar. And it's very sustainable FOR ME. Just b/c YOU don't think it is doesn't mean it can't be.
I would never be able to go vegan, but I'm not going to sit here and claim that it's not sustainable or that they must be miserable without meat.
I also don't do butter in coffee b/c it sounds gross.. TO ME, but to say that everyone that drinks it that way definitely doesn't enjoy it too? Really? Good grief. Get off that high horse of yours.
And way to assume most overweight people are idiots too... even though we've all been told most of our lives to eat less, portion control, count calories, etc. But yeah.. keep thinking you're right and everyone else is stupid.
