@amymoreorless - once I discovered running and strength training it was much easier to do those than dieting. However by then I had already made changes to my lifestyle with things like cutting out all sodas (diet or otherwise) and measuring portion sizes but I no longer went on 'diets' I had had way too many failures in my past with those already. I do think the key was as others have said to find something that you like to do. I have friends on MFP and IRL who hate to exercise, hate to sweat and would never go out of their way to do something like running because it is fun. To them it is a chore and I don't think they will ever stick with it, no matter how much healthier (and possibly happier) it would make them.
@HonuNui - that party looks awesome! How did everyone enjoy the boring game or did they not notice because they were just enjoying the great company and food?
I am still just walking with maybe just a tiny bit of running mixed in here and there.

Now as for this s morning, it's our national holiday here today, think 4th July with out the fireworks (well literal ones, we get a lot of political ones. A few years ago a politician had a *kitten* thrown at him in protest. Because he was being a dick. Get it?). So day off work midweek! Yay!
sometimes I just don't get MFP and its dislike of certain cuss words. Whatever was thrown at the politician becomes a kitten (poor kitty) but you can call him a dick?
Or is it just the contrast with British English - I mean we wouldn't really use the word fanny (because it references the 'front-bottom') but fanny-packs are sold in department stores across the US.

Dick is a common name. It is short for Richard. This just points to the problem of blanket "block all these specific words"- all those that true to run forums on the internet face this problem. Most, like MFP, do some light per-word blocking and count on their moderators to handle the rest. Far from perfect, but it works well enough.4 -

And fanny here means back bottom. Parents tell their little kids that the fanny is gonna get spanked... well, least where spanking still happens. Although, unfortunately I’ve heard parents say some horrible thing to their kids in public, nothing any one should ever say to another being.2 -
@amymoreorless -Great question. I used to think dieting was easier than exercise. However, that was when I lost and regained weight over and over. But now I'm seriously addicted to running, lifting and cycling and find it much harder to cut back. I find if I am too hungry I just can't perform! I seriously need to think about reducing my sugar intake. I'm eating way too much chocolate at the moment!

A beautiful 4.5 miles this morning! Beautiful as in the weather and I felt good. Was trying to keep it very slow.
Saturday is my duathlon. I don't know much about it, just signed up because some cycling friends are doing it. I decided I better figure out where it is so I just looked at the website and it looks like we run through a farm! I've not practiced switching between running and cycling once (for speed I mean). But I don't really care, I'm just doing it for the experience. It is a 5K run, 20K bike, 2.5K run. I'm just using my road bike and not switching out the pedals to keep on running shoes. This means I will have to switch into my bike cleats for the cycling portion and then out of them to run the last 2.5K. I have run before and after cycling during my running streak, and the after is much worse, but it's only 2.5 after, so I'll deal.
2/1 - Rest Day
2/2 - 37 miles cycling
2/3 - 48 miles cycling
2/4 - 4.5 miles + strength training - upper body
2/5 - 5 miles! + strength training - glutes/abs
2/6 - 4.5 miles

I totally agree with you, but probably only because I love food and I love running, and running allows me to eat more food. This was the first one where I ran 5 minutes walked 3 minutes. And I am proud to say I killed it! Last week I was struggling to hit the second 3 minute and 5 minute runs. I am super nervous about day 2. It says I am supposed to run 8 minutes in a row. The last time I ran that long I think was high school. So we shall see. I hope I surprise myself. But my lungs quiver at the thought.

when it gets to the eight minute run - slow down. slow down if your lungs are struggling, but keep running. You can get through it.
Thanks for the advice. I feel like I run fairly slow as is (5.5 MPH on the TM). I just have asthma. I have been doing good so far as long as I take my inhaler before I start. But, my lungs have long been my nemisis for high intesisty cardio. I'll just take it slow, and build up on what I can do. If I have to do this week twice, so be it. If I only run 6 minutes next time, it will be 1 minute longer then today.

I went out for a run at 9am and it is already 30 degrees! Soooo hot. So I decided to only do a couple of 2s, and a walk. Especially since I have so many aches due to shoes. Today I wore my alternate shoes and no knee pains. So definitely the shoes. I was also back to my usual pace. Has anyone else experienced that? Slowing down as shoes wear out? I've noticed my pace in my old shoes was slipping a little. I just put it down to lack of training recently but now I wonder if it was my legs saying they didn't like something?

@amymoreorless I think I used to find the exercise part more difficult (mostly laziness on my part to be honest!) however as I lost the weight, started to maintain and made exercise a part of my daily routine, I found it was the food that was the difficult part.
I think it's because I like having something I can work towards - I can change/increase/adapt my fitness and exercise goals now but there's less of that for food when I'm maintaining.2 -

I upped my "other cardio" goal, didn't want to meet it too quickly. It was hard getting ready this morning. I just didn't feel like getting on a treadmill for a speed workout... but made myself do it and it went just fine (unlike last week's speedwork). I know I almost always feel better afterwards, it's just getting started that doesn't get any easier. I had beed a bit worried about my old hamstring injury possibly acting up, but the "massage" (read "beating") I delivered to the area yesterday with my elbow seems to have done the trick as it feels fine today.

I will try to slow my pace a bit and see if I can go further before I have to walk. 4mph is my "power walk" pace, so I'm not sure I can get a jog on at that pace. I will try out 5.0 tomorrow (If I'm not trying to get sick that is) and see how I fair. Woke up this morning with a bit of a sore throat and cruddy nose. I'm hoping it's just an effect of snoring and allergies.
I'm sort of curious to see when (at what pace) I get that "skippy" have to jog feel now...3 -

Nice, cool, rainy morning for running. Got back onto the pedestrian trail for the first time since December; there were still a couple of icy patches, but nothing too bad.4 -
I had difficulty getting to sleep last night but once I did, I was out; I fought getting up with the alarm at 3:45. Dogs help with that.
Running through freshly fallen snow is harder than I expected! It was ... dare I say ... fun!? even at a 'feels like' temperature just above 0F. It helped that there wasn't much wind.
My plan called for 3 miles and on a whim I decided to push for 5k so 3.14 miles done - 5 minutes faster than my previous second fastest time on Monday. Reminder to self: foam roll and stretch more.8 -
My workout was different today. I struggle with week day mornings but have huge obligations also every Wednesday evening. Argh. I decided something was better than nothing so I got on the treadmill for 20 mins in which time I walked 8 mins and then did 5 intervals of running trying to ease into it. Then I got off the treadmill and did what I had to do (family obligations), which I think probably took 15 min? Then I got back on the treadmill for 22 mins of which I ran 20. I was pretty stressed out that I was gonna be late for work but I tried to hurry and I made it :-p So at least I ran 20 mins plus a few minutes in part 1 of my workout.12

@amymoreorless personally, I think dieting is significantly harder than exercise, so I completely agree with you. Exercise has become a part of my lifestyle and is something I look forward to everyday. When it comes to limiting food, however, I have a really hard time. I love food. And by food, I mean the really not good for you kind of food. Which is fine on the days that I do exercise, especially when that “runger” kicks in, but I definitely overdo it on rest days. Basically, I need to find a way of incorporating healthy eating methods into my lifestyle the same way I’ve incorporated exercise, but I haven’t quite figured it out yet.2

@garygse - I have been away awhile. I know you have been training like a beast though. What is your race? Do you have a goal?
Last night was speedwork at the track. It was the first Tuesday this year so far that it wasn't cancelled due to weather. That's not to say conditions were great though. It was foggy with a light rain which held out (fortunately) until our cool down when it opened up into an all out pour. It was in the low forties and my legs were definitely not used to this kind of running in the cold. We did 2 X 400s, 2 X800s and 2 X400s. Not a tough workout, but midway through the first 800 my hamstring cramped up, like charlie horse kind of cramp and I had to abort my lap. I was not sure if I should continue (the hamstring has been a chronic issue for me), so I decided to take the next 800 easy and try and work it out. It did work itself out and I was able to do the final 400s at close to the pace of the first 2. This was a really tough workout for me and I was feeling pretty out of shape until I got my Garmin data. I was running my 400s in the low 6 min/mile range. Yeah, that is waaay faster than my 5K pace, which is what I wanted to be doing.
Oh, and I also scheduled an hour long strength training session at 6AM this morning since I have to get my meds later today. Got that in plus a 30 minute easy ride on the bike. Feels good to have today's workout done!10 -

I'm contemplating taking my implant out.... It's been in for 18 months and I've found it sooooo hard to lose weight! I'm 15kg heavier but I'm never sure if it's the implant or that I stopped breastfeeding but I gain so easily and I just can not lose it! Even when running and eating at a deficit I am still not losing!
I've lost weight before so I know it isn't easy and I don't think it happens over night but I walk 5km a day just on school runs (before runs or gym etc) and I eat healthy and yet I can not get my weight below 100kg....
Appointment made to talk to the doctor about it on Friday!4 -
