My friend is building up for her first half marathon and has started increasing mileage but, as many beginning runner do, is struggling with doing the longer distances solo, so I said I'd run with her today. I usually do a 10k on Thursdays, but today was 15. Nice to see my calf didn't mind a bit!

BUT in extremely positive news, I have an amazing mum!
Yesterday was a national holiday here, so I asked if she would be willing to go the outlet store near her, and see if they had any of my current model of shoes in my size - last seasons Asics Gel Kayano 24's. so she very kindly went. They had heaps of them, at a decent price. BUT NONE in a wide size. of course I have wide feet. nope they couldnt even get any in. So she went to the local sporting shop and asked them for the NEW model- since they had a 30% off sale. Yep they have them. and in stock. but not in a wide. they dont stock the wide.
By this time mum was fed up and frustrated FOR me. So she went to a shoe specialist place, who of course has the new model only. Because of the drama, she got me the the new model in my size, and $20 off because its a holiday.
So she posted them this morning by urgent courier. In theory I should have them tomorrow, but I know how these things work, I wont get them till after the weekend. But yay, new shoes on the way!
Ive decided no more running till i have the new shoes, and lets all pray to what ever power you hold highest they fit.
You know, it didn’t occur to me, but I’m always happy to pop into Rebel or wherever to get you the shoes you want then courier them up. No problem.
I think when the new version of the asics gel kayano come out (26) I may well get you to do that! (get the 25 I mean as it will be discounted...). Rebel isn't so bad, there is one only 1hr 20 min away but as I've found they don't tend to stock wide shoes. I've learned the last year I pretty much have to go to a specialist shoe shop for wide shoes. Sigh.4 -

This going badly. I can’t jog more than a mile without a walk break. I have tried slowing down and it still happens, and I am already at snails pace. Legs feel like lead, and I often feel sick (this isn’t just when I jog). I never expected to be able to do decent time for a half marathon, or even that I’d run all of it but now I have to ask you guys, if I walk most of will I just be laughed out of town? Is it still worth doing the event I have entered in May or not. Struggling.

Decathlon: I had a tantrum in there last night over their stupid pockets. Fell head over heals in love with a jacket I came across in the men's running section while my husband was trying on shoes. It had a zipped pocket on the upper arm for phone. Checked women's section, nope no jackets there. Went back to men's, tried on smallest size. Perfect! Remembered (thank God I'm learning) to try putting my phone in said pocket. Only half my phone fit, the other half was sticking out the top. No way that was going to zip up. Pffft. For crying out loud my phone ain't that big, why can't they make their pockets big enough dammit?
Then we went to Lidl and they had bluetooth earphone on offer, so I caved and picked up a pair. The wire to my earphones has been a problem recently with the cold, in the summer I just run with my phone in my hand but atm that means my fingers freeze, and if I put it in my belt the wire gets in the way. Off to try them out in a few but fear they seem clunky and heavy and might fall out. Hmm.5 -

No. You won’t get laughed at. Runners are a very supportive and understanding crowd on the whole. So many of us started where you are now. We totally get it. Stick with your training plan. These things take time, sometimes ages. But if you continue to work, continue to build up your mileage, you will finish your half. Yes, you might walk a lot of it, but that’s ok. Others will do this too. You might come dead last, but so what - someone has to. And you’ll feel amazing for having accomplished this, regardless of your time or placing.
Regards your feeling sick, it is probably be worth seeing your GP for a check up.11 -

The offer applies to specialist shoe stores too - Albany, St Luke’s, Newmarket, Ponsonby are all close to me.2 -
woke up to go for a run this morning, heard a strange whooshing noise outside - looked out the window, trees waving back and forth at speed and heavy rain.
Guess what I did?
Yup. Went back to bed like a sensible person. Thing is, when I got in my car to go to work a couple of hours later, the wind had dies and it had stopped raining, and all I felt was REGRET.
The saying you only regret the runs you DIDN'T do is true. But srsly??????

I missed how far away your 1/2 is? A runner that has a few 5ks and a 10k under their belt (that they ran most/all of) would take 12-16 weeks to get ready to run a 1/2. Given your stated level, I would guess more like 25 or more weeks is likely. Realistic expectations and goals will go a long way towards mental health in this.
Regardless I echo everything @ContraryMaryMary said.
Just make sure you start near the back of the pack and yield to faster runners. It will also serve as a good marker for where you are so that years from now you can look back and say "look how far I came!"
Do you have a training plan? If not get one.7 -
Three miles this morning, in a storm; I got soaked completely through, but loved every second of it. Honestly, it felt like a summer thunderstorm, with temps at 72F, flashes of lightning, and warm rain...except it's February.

@samthepanda First of all I would check to see if your race has a time limit, and if so how long it is. If it doesn't or it has a nice easy limit (ie not 2.5 hours max for me) then go ahead and plan to run/walk it. I did one in December by running 9 minutes, walking 1 minute, and that took me 2 and a half hours. Have a look at the Jeff Galloway method (run-walk-run) or Hal Higdon has a plan (and I'm sure many others do too) for walking a half marathon. At the end of the day nobody will laugh at you, either for pulling out or for walking the whole thing or for doing it barefoot or bouncing a tennis ball or doing it naked or backwards. Runners are freakin awesome like that. In fact I've seen a marathon where the guy who finished it in 6 hours was cheered over the finish line far more than the elite Ethiopian athlete who fell over and crawled over the finish line in 3rd place.
@kgirlhart I hear ya, we had that horrible sideways galeforce rain chit here recently and not being brave enough to run in it totally ruined my day! @garygse don't worry, it'll probably be snowing again tomorrow, the world is going crazy.
I'm a happy bunny today. My new bluetooth earbuds worked great, my two 8 minute running intervals were blissful this morning (although I had to be very stern with myself to make myself do the walk break in between them). Second run felt a little tough until I refound that easy pace sweet spot where suddenly you stop wondering how you're going to keep this up for as far as you need to and start feeling like you could keep going all day. Coincidentally that was probably after about a mile of running altogether, reinforcing the never trust the first mile motto.
Then to round it all off when I got home I saw they're doing a local charity 3-race series here. 1st race is 3km on Feb 17, 2nd is 5km on March 17, 3rd is 7km on April 28th. €10 to sign up for all 3 and you get a T-shirt if you finish all 3. Perfect!!!!! Guess tomorrow's rest day is going to include a gentle walk into town to sign up for those

There are a *lot* of people out there who alternate running and walking. Definitely do not feel bad about that, or about your slow time! I live in an area with a lot of very active people and spent a lot of time comparing myself to them until it finally suck in that we are all running our own race here, and every single runner I've talked to either online or in person has been hugely supportive of newcomers. Also, they will encourage you to slow down, as will I, no matter how much like a slug you feel. I actually made myself a playlist of slower music to encourage myself to slow down! Generally if you can slow down, do. Speed will come later. /hugs8 -

^^ this. All of this. And the thing about music is very good advice. I find it much easier to find and keep to a slow, easy pace with music to keep rhythm to.

^^^ so much all of this.
I do a Mountain Trail HM and the back of the packers get the biggest cheers by everyone, in fact it's part of the tradition of the event to line the finish chute and support them since they have actually burned up more energy ( physical and mental ) to get to the line when they are running/walking all alone with no one close to help support them through the mental lows. So just go out and run/walk as you need to.
On the positive news last night was -34C + windchill = -39C, this morning -24C. I can see a run happening tonight after swim club. It might be short but it will be a run.9 -

Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen.
Interval training today (ugh). Warmup; followed by three sets of 8 minutes at threshold/2 minutes easy; followed by cooldown. It was very easy to tell I've been neglecting speed work; each threshold segment got progressively slower. On a springy note, heard a red winged blackbird singing this morning; spring is on the way. Also earned my 100 mile bib in the Run the Year Challenge. GO TEAM FIVE FOR NINETEEN!!!!!10 -

Thanks for the hugs on my brain barf post yesterday. I ended up skipping a third day of workouts in favor of napping and getting my work stuff done. I've been having a productive morning in spite of not sleeping well and am planning on taking my gym stuff with me to my CLE (continuing legal education) conference this afternoon and seeing how I feel about working out after five hours discussing attempts to address racial bias in the Minnesota state courts. I'm guessing I'll probably want to work out, but that will probably mean missing dinner and there's going to be shoveling to do tonight, so we'll see.5
-
My run didn't happen this morning like I had planned. Still feeling like I'm trying to get sick. And if I am, I don't want to spread my crud all over the gym. I'm hoping with one more day of rest I'll fight this off and be in working order tomorrow. OR I'll be officially sick. We'll see, lol. I'll be eating zinc like it's candy today. It also doesn't help it was -22F when I woke up this morning.7

The question is not whether you will get laughed at. You won't. The question is whether you will be in shape to finish, and how long the cutoff is to get an official finishing time. Focus on those last two, and forget your fear of embarrassment. Adults do not gather to point and laugh at the slowest runner.
On Sunday, I was in Tallahassee with a noon checkout from my hotel and a 4:45 PM flight out. I went out for a run at 8, and found the course of the Tallahassee half. I ran retro along the course, cheering the participants. (I had been too uninformed and disorganized to enter it myself.)
I never saw the lead runners, but at one point I found the course when there were early runners. They were moving at a good clip, spaced out a bit, and I obviously needed to stay out of their tangents. From that point, I ran beside the course backwards and watched the character of the participants change. There were the runners who were fast enough to be spaced out. Then there were the early pack runners, still thinking time but in clumps. Then there were the mid-pack runners, in bigger clumps and probably thinking of how to go the distance. Then there were the slow runners, still running but some of them wanted to talk to the guy in the Boston shirt who was running the wrong way.
Then there were walkers and runners mixed together. I don't know how many of those walkers were walk-run people, and I don't know how many of the people I saw running had taken walking breaks. But even near the very end, there were people who were going to travel further on foot than I would that day. That deserves respect.
Many of the people bringing up the rear were carrying some excess weight. I saw no one mocking them, and let's be honest: They were out there, walking, running, or doing a walk-run for 13.1 miles. They had to have no expectation of any performance-based awards. Some may have doubted their ability to finish. But they were there, putting in the effort. And once they cross the finish line, they can show a medal and say they've completed a half marathon. That's something the majority of Americans will never do in their lifetimes.20 -

In running terms, May is a million years from now. When I started c25k I couldn't run the one minute intervals the first time without feeling like I was going to die, and four months later I was running 10k with no problems.
If there are time limits on your race they will be posted on the web site, it depends on the race. No one will mind if you walk part of it.4 -

Are you fuelling your runs enough? Others have commented on how you won't be laughed at, and that walking is fine, but I just wonder why your legs feel like lead - perhaps you should consider a small snack before your run?5 -
@samthepanda - many have commented on your post but I really like what @mobycarp says hereMany of the people bringing up the rear were carrying some excess weight. That's something the majority of Americans will never do in their lifetimes.
I would add a couple of questions for you too - 1) Do you eat something before you run? If not you might look at what you had earlier in the day or the previous night depending on when you are running. Sometimes having just a little something (banana and a bit of PB or a piece of toast, etc.) about 30-45 mins before you run might help your legs not feel so dead as well as helping your stomach. But make sure you aren't eating anything too close to when you run either. 2) Are you drinking enough water? I know if I don't drink enough before, during and after I can get an upset stomach too.
If you haven't you probably should be checked by your doctor just to make sure there is not something going on and giving you stomach issues.
Your HM isn't until May and like others said don't worry about having to run all of it and certainly don't worry about walking now. Be consistent with your training and have a plan for fitting in the walk breaks and you will make progress. Jeff Galloway's run/walk plan is a great one to try.

May is still about 12 weeks of training away. Are you following a particular plan? Do you have any idea what is causing the sick feeling? I'd suggest addressing those things first, and going from there. You can decide later about the half.3 -
@samthepanda Throwing my voice of support and reassurance in there! I hope you figure out what you need to feel better during your runs!
@Tramboman Way to go on the 100 mile bib! Our team thanks you!2 -
I got out for an almost summery evening run of 3.4 miles last night. I was drenched by the time I got home. It's officially time to start carrying water with me on all my runs. I really enjoyed not having to lug so much stuff during the colder months. It was breezy and that helped a lot to keep the humidity from feeling stifling. We are getting a bit of a cold front tomorrow (upper 40's F) for a couple of days, so I can enjoy a tiny bit more of cooler temps before the inevitable heat settles in.
