bullied at the gym

Yeah I fully own the fact I shouldn't have been on the phone. Not allowed in my gym. I DID break the rule. I was more bothered by the manner in which he came at me. He was about 30years my senior and I felt threatened. Than he decided to make a big deal about my age claiming I shouldn't be using my parents membership, he was going to have the attendant call my mom, etc. Facts being the gym is apart of a very snotty golf club. It is MY membership, I write the damn check every month. And the gym is HUGE and we were the only people in there.
Unfortunately, this is the 3rd time I have had someone at this club my a big deal out of my age (before I was accused of being my sons nanny and also called a trophy wife.) I am pretty sure when renewals come up I am not going to be joining again. This is probably why the manager was talking about getting new members...2 -

Figures.
I've never had any bad experiences like that with people at any of the 24hour fitness gyms I've been to but I've had some not-so-in shape friends complain about feeling out of place and unwelcome while attending Golds Gym clubs.0 -
Report him to gym management. Next time, a foot in the boys1

He went out of his way to be a jerk to you. He could have reminded you of the phone policy without being such a tool about it.
Report him next time. If you're being harrassed about your age and such on a regular basis, I'd say shop around for a new gym when your renewal time comes. I love my gym. I'm a good ten years older and a lot heavier than their average clientele, but I've never been made to feel unwelcome in any way.0 -
a girl in jeans with way too much perfume did that to me the other day. I didn't look at her at ask just moved really fast on the elliptical til she gave up.0

Hi Grace! I'm sorry to hear you were bullied at the gym. I actually found this posting because I too, just got bullied. Last night at Planet Fitness, they were giving away free pizza like they always do every 1st Monday of the month. I've been craving pizza for a week solid and decided to treat myself to a slice. So on my way into my pre-workout hydromassage, slice in hand, some obnoxious twatwaffle sitting on the couch LOUDLY yelled at me: "PIZZA!?! AT A GYM!!! You GOTTA be kidding me!" - and it wasn't in an excited "oh boy free pizza" kind of way. She was definitely in the judgement zone with that one. At first it stung a bit, but then I thought, she doesn't know me. She doesn't know that I work TWO jobs and take care of an elderly grandparent, so sometimes the extra calories come in handy because I'm so busy. She doesn't know I was on my feet for the last three hours at my second job pushing carts, shelving materials, running up and down stairs and shifting books. She doesn't know nutritionally my day went well and I could actually get away with eating a slice of pizza that day. She doesn't know that I've lost a grand total of 125 pounds and my success story was featured in Newsday. She doesn't know that DESPITE that 1 slice of pizza i still lost 2.5 pounds. She doesn't know, and has no clue whatsoever. You know what my dad taught me? When you don't know something, keep your mouth shut, have some class and mind your own business. Some people could use that advice. I know it's hard not to take it personally when someone talks *kitten* to you like that, but in truth, their criticism is never about you. It's about them, because happy secure people don't go tearing others down. Just gotta make like Taylor Swift and "shake it off".5

Fyi, there's a fine line between criticism and harassment. If this happens regularly, especially with repeat offenders, it's harassment- report them to the front desk. Make note of the time, place and what happened- especially if it interferes with your workout in any way.0

Also: being the recipient of harassment once isn't being bullied. If your harasser showed up regularly to abuse you, then you are being bullied. If we're talking about what words mean, then I thought we could also talk about the word bullied.

You make a good point.0

I just give them the.....EYE.... that seems to help. I also have a beard. I think that might help with my limited fear ability. Besides telling to screw off, grow a beard maybe? Lol0

Its a reflection of that couple not of general gym members behaviours. At my gym mobile phone calls / texting is band, we are only allowed phones if being used as an ipod,
Everyone at my gym are helpful and friendly, I wanted to try chest press on the free weights area but I couldn't work out how to get the bench down to a flat position, a guy watched me struggle for a bit, put his weights down and came over to help, he showed me where the handle was and how to get it to flat. That is how most people are in gyms, we share kit, if we are using a machine that someone else wants on they will ask and we will give them a heads up when we are on our final set,
My advice is to get some decent headphones, a good playlist and blank out the snooty haters0 -
A Buddhist tip I just learned is that the endless reflection on what I could have done doesn’t help. By reflecting on the incident I have essentially invited those bullies to live in my brain.
Truly, madame turtleneck and her snide partner can go take a dive in to a deep snow bank.
I suggest if you run in to an incident like that again, do whatever feels best at the time whether it is walk away, talk to the manager, or tell them to mind their own business. But regardless of your choice, keep your head held high. Don’t take the submissive position.

2011 thread.
I hope the OP is over it.
I'll resurrect a 1960s iconic TV duo in solidarity.

First, taking the treadmill next to you is probably nothing. I have my preferred Treadmill, I have a second or third choice too, but have have a preferred one. I do not care that 5 or 10 others are open, if that one is open that is the one I am going to. (And from taking to friends I know a lot of people have preferred machines as well. Sometime the machines run slightly differently, sometimes one machines H/R monitor works, sometimes it is the programming on the TV.)
The talking on the phone? Yeah it is a pet peeve for a lot of people. If you are tying up a machine, you are adding to the peeve. I do NOT answer the phone at the gym, if it is an emergency they text me and I walk outside or to an area and call back. So the fact that someone called you on it, it happens.
In this case I would say you just need to shake it off. If it happens repeatedly, then that is harassment and then you might need to talk to management or bring a friend.0 -

Maybe they were hoping to scam the gym somehow. Get in to some sort of confrontation with someone else and then go complain about it until they get like free membership time or something. Seriously no other reason for anyone to do anything like that... or they could've just been a-holes.
Don't let people like that get to you. If it happens again, just stare them down and then go to an employee and complain about them quickly before they can leave. People like that just... grr.. get on my nerves.
Grrr.... dang old threads!!0
