Unless you have a medical condition like renal or cardiac failure, whereby you have to be aware of how much fluid you intake -or you are trekking through the desert or running a marathon in full sun and at risk of dehydration - then just drink when you are thirsty.
and, within your calorie allowance, whatever you want. (but maybe not beer for breakfast )
No need to calculate your body weight to water ratio or to look at your urine colour or to track your water amount.
in short, no need to complicate something which is not complicated.
Ordinary healthy people in ordinary everyday life do not get dehydrated.8 -
To give an idea of how ridiculous they are, a calculator based on my weight says:

That's with 0 exercise. I've had a couple of times I've come probably close to that. In hot weather, while moving a lot, and sweating buckets, that's a lot of water. If you're fat and sweat more, you may need to drink more than most on the same day. But most people need 2-3 litres a day, including what's in their food. Due to not having the best thirst signals and being prone to bladder and UT infections, I was told to drink 2L on top of food, 3 if sweating a lot or generally hot weather. But that was with a medical need for extra. I was also told what I'm drinking doesn't matter much, but to try and have some of that as non-caffeinated drinks just as they can cause you to dehydrate slightly quicker. Didn't matter if it was flavoured sparkling water, though.1 -

You just need to be properly hydrated. Your excess weight (ie burnt off) is carried out of your body through your pee, so dehydration wouldn't help that. But then, being dehydrated would be harmful for a myriad of other reasons too!

I lose more when I drink it. No science, just me. If I have a sodium heavy day, it helps. For me, it also helps with hunger.1

That's true, diet soda is only 99% water so 12 oz of diet soda probably equals more like 11.85 oz of water.
Regardless, it doesn't really matter. Just like with food, there is no reason to label each food or each beverage as good or bad, it's the overall diet. Whether your pee is light colored because you drank (6 cups of water), (4 cups of water, 1 bowl of soup, and one diet soda), (2 cups of water, 4 diet sodas, and a cup of tea), or (5 cups of coffee and 5 diet sodas), what's important is you are well hydrated.18 -

I LOVE this thread! I've been trying to figure out how to stay hydrated properly while stuck in traffic for 2.5 hours and going between jobs. It can freaking hurt sometimes
Looks like I can cut back on my water intake during the workday because I'm one of those sick puppies that believe the advice given here. From some peeps anyway10 -

Well you could have given the cliffs beyond the link and said you breath it out.
Though technically, part of it is also going to be water, just not water you take in. Breaking down a fatty acid or a sugar is going to produce water as well as carbon dioxide.1 -
If calorific defecit is all that is need how can water intake be irellevent? If two people eat the same meals in a day but one drinks water n the other soda, the water drinker has fewer callories
That comparison makes no sense. If the person drinking the soda logs their calorie intake from the soda and stays below their set calorie intake for weight loss, it makes no difference whether they drank the soda.

Coffee and soda DO count as water consumption. I have chronic kidney disease and have to monitor my fluid intake very carefully. All fluids count, as well as foods with water content. I think I will trust my urologist on this.12 -

It helps me to aim for a certain number of glasses per day, otherwise I forget to drink and my urine is strongly yellow, even brownish, putting me in the dehydrated category. I am one of those people who thinks that thirst is hunger apparently because I want to eat a lot more than i want to drink. Cheese and crackers don't add much water to my system.2

No, its a fallacy, don't do anything in weight loss or fitness unless you can go find a real study on it, there is way too much broscience.
I think in truth there is a happy medium - make sure your hydrated, your cells will be full of water and your bodies chemistry relies on it, so being hydrated helps that.
The real weight loss is going to come from hitting your daily calorie goals, day in and day out.2 -

I find it really sucks that people would have to pay to see a RD, to be honest. I was recommended to one when my blood tests indicated I was likely pre-diabetic and my dr referred me to a dietician who also worked out of the office (it's one of those places with a few different doctors' offices, blood lab, pharmacy, etc). Didn't have to pay anything, just had to show up for my appointments and honestly it was really helpful when I was getting started. He was the one that recommended MFP to me. Not that everyone necessarily needs a dietician, but they're usually a good place to start for help.0 -

I do have a hitch That would have been a great solution to my full bladder on the highway problem lol.3
