How much water should you drink?

I know the goal on MFP is 8 glasses. But is that 8 -16 oz. glasses, or 8 oz. cups, or 12 oz. restaurant size? And is this amount the same for everyone no matter what you weigh? I have also read other ways to calculate it. 1/2 ounce per pound you weigh, 1 ounce every 200 calories you eat, etc. Or does it even matter? Does other liquids count? Is this all woo?

You get water from all kinds of foods and drinks. As long as your pee is light colored you are getting plenty of water.
I believe the "health and wellness" industry recommendation which the MFP counter is based on is 64 oz = eight 8 oz cups. There's no harm in counting it if you really want, and it can be helpful for people who get caught up in their busy day and find themselves often dehydrated. But there's no magic number, as the hydration you need is influenced by your environment, size, activity level, health, climate and some people eat lots of watery foods while others don't5 -
I do at least a gallon every day, that's like 8 16.9 oz water bottles.3

I have kidney issues and I am told by my urologist and my nephrologist to drink until my pee is pale yellow. For me, the amount depends on a lot of factors: my activity, the temperature, what foods I have eaten, etc.4

8 “glasses” refers to 8 oz each. The expression is a general rule of thumb rather than a clinical prescription.0

First start by asking yourself if there is any benefit to you in tracking water at all.
If you have no signs of dehydration then is there any point at all?1 -
