Maximized Living Advanced Plan - Super Strict Diet

Hey guys, so a friend got me to join a fitness challenge at her chiro office. They're a "Maximized Living" chiro. They promote a book called "Align Your Health"
They promote an advanced health plan that is VERY strict..
I packed on horrenous weight gain doing Keto for a month.. so I was hoping this 6 week challenge would help me, but I'm finding it overly strict
There's another post about it here https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/1020177/maximized-living-advanced-plan
on an old thread
Basically all you can eat is a very limited list of low carb vegetables.. Berries and green apples, no dairy, nothing processed, no bread or grains.. no potato, no rice, no pasta or lentils
PREVIOUSLY i have successfully dropped a lot of weight by eating vegan short term.. and on high carb (brown rice, veg, oats, rice milk, bananas and potatos as snacks) have droppec 16lb in 10-11 days before
however right now I'm pregnant and for some reason the OB office demonized healthy carbs, and the chiro office says the advanced plan is very healthy in pregnancy.
I just feel sad because bananas make me happy, and potatos make me happy, and when I'm at goal weight I'm eating a lot of them.
I'm currently 35 pounds above goal weight... and they say i will see results on this max living advanced plan
but I struggle coz I really dont like most of the food that's allowed.
No I'm not a junk junkie.. by far not.. but I'm happy having oats and bananas for breakfast (of which both are forbidden) and i succeed best when I have brown rice or potato (of which both are forbidden)
the goal of the diet is to eliminate toxins and anything that can cause inflammation
basically their suggested diet looks like ths
breakfast - smoothie with nut milk, berries, organic grass fed whey protein (which they sell)
and lunch and dinner to be organic chicken with green vegetables
I don't enjoy eating animals, and I don't enjoy NOT eating brown rice or potato or banana.
struggling
furthermore all my books and previous studies indicate the only miracle diet to cure lifes problems is veganism... NOT keto or similar (whilst the advanced plan is not considered keto, it is very similar)

Why are you doing this to yourself? Get all different doctors who don't demonize foods "for some reason" but only when there is a reason, such as gestational diabetes, which they tell you about because you are an adult who is paying them. Follow a diet which works for you and which you don't hate. These people are not the boss of you. You are the boss. Find better people.27

Are you seriously considering starting a super-restrictive, low-protein diet while pregnant?
Are you considering taking a chiropractor's advice on pregnancy nutrition?
If you really believe that "detoxifying" exists, do you want to do it while pregnant (and flush the "toxins" that you believe in into your developing baby?"
Are you willing to risk the diseases that raw milk can carry that are specifically damaging to developing babies?
Why are you talking about how much weight to lose while pregnant?

You don't need to follow a diet to lose weight. Input your data into MyFitnessPal and stick to the amount of calories they give you. Eat what YOU want to eat. I know I could never stick to my calorie allowance without a good amount of carbs.9
-
I would never try any diet that "forbids" certain foods. That's a sure set-up for a binge for me.
I eat whatever I like. I stay within my calorie allotment. I lose and win.8 -

Right there is a big red flag for a scam/fad/gimmick and I'd steer clear of anything that uses this kind of language.
Also, do some looking into Maximized Living chiro practices-so much woo it makes your head spin
Run far away OP!

I would rather be totally overweight than to subject myself to this torture.11

Everything about this sounds super-sketchy.
You're pregnant, which is a time when you should be eating a wide variety of foods to support not just your health, but the health of your fetus.
You don't like the foods on this plan and, in fact, you prefer to eat in a way that is very different than this plan.
And the people who are selling you this plan aren't experts in nutrition, they aren't experts in pregnancy, they aren't experts in weight loss . . . they aren't even doctors. They're doing this to sell protein powder, they don't have your best interest in mind.
I would drop this whole thing and eat a reasonable number of calories for pregnancy, getting them from a variety of foods that you enjoy.
While veganism isn't a "miracle diet," a varied vegan diet sounds more manageable and like it would be a much better fit for how you enjoy eating. And you could have bananas, oats, and potatoes!28 -
Take your post to your OB. Ask your Dr or a nurse to explain the "for some reason" part to your satisfaction. Ask specifically about gestational diabetes. Keep asking questions until you are satisfied you understand the answers.
Forget the chiro and his program. Do not go back there.16 -

This is simply not true. There is no legitimate data that shows any such thing.
The plan you are describing is a gimmicky load of salesmanship and snake oil.
Please please please do not endanger your baby by going on a restrictive fad diet. If your conscience leads you to be vegan, ask your OB to refer to a registered dietitian and they will be able to look at the foods you LIKE and WANT to eat, and tell you if that will give you the complete nutrition you need for pregnancy or of there are some tweaks you need to make or perhaps something to supplement.29 -

I missed that part, oh boy.
OP-veganisim is no guarantee of anything. I'd suggest you read Even Vegans Die, which is written by a vegan RD, Virginia Messina.7 -

RUN, don't walk away from all of this insanity. What you do to your body on your own time is up to you, but right now you've got something more important to do - grow a healthy baby.
Please see a registered dietician for help with finding a proper and nutitious diet with an appropriate caloric intake.
Please.21 -

Of all the things that could possibly be said... this is the most important at the time.

Almost everything about this is nuts. First of all, why are you taking diet advice from a Chiropractor? That's like taking advice on flying a plane from a truck driver. Fire all of the doctors in your life if they are promoting anything like this to you.
Why are you trying to lose weight while pregnant? Losing weight while pregnant can be very unhealthy and you are at seriously putting your baby at risk if you are trying to do drastic dieting while pregnant. Focus on the health of your baby first, and then weight loss after pregnancy. Focusing on it now can do a lot of harm.
I think maybe you would be best served by seeking advice from a registered mental health professional, in addition to medical doctors. I don't mean this in a flippant and offensive way, but they may help you deal with whatever issues are causing you to feel like you need to lose weight while pregnant.
Please please please put the health of your baby first.18 -

If you're wanting a healthy baby, perhaps focus on a nutritionally balanced diet for the duration of the pregnancy. Enough protein, healthy fats, vitamins and minerals. Asking for a referral to a Registered Dietician is a great start. The more common advice I've read regarding weight and pregnancy is to focus on maintaining your weight throughout, rather than losing. Do this only in coordination with your medical team. They are the ones who know your medical history as well as having the training in best practices to support healthy pregnancy.8

Just one of the many reasons why chiros should be regarded as pretend doctors and charged with practicing without a license.9
-
Nobody said anything about a low protein diet. It isn't low protein, and none of the links I provided say it is.9
-
The very first link in the first post contains these words :
“maximum amount of protein is 15 grams for women and 25 grams for men. “19 -

Do you have some proprietary definition for low?1 -

I agree with you.. I'm happiest when I'm eating a lot of brown rice and potatos as the base of the meal and the other veggies around it. These "carbs are demons" people cause me a lot of anxst.. but they seem to be everywhere.
10 years ago everyone was educated enough to acknowledge that (whether you like it or not) vegan eating high carb is the healthiest.. - I grew up with 2 chinese drs who were both very pro plant based natural eating.
I've never had trouble hitting protein targets with plant based foods, and most of the vegan milks have a LOT more calcium and protein than the animal varieties.
What's more upsetting is that the midwife (who had just met me) told me to avoid carbs
I had my appointment at the OB office yesterday and she told me to avoid carbs..
I didn't ask why as I'm already trying to follow the 'Maximized Living" guidelines which as you can read, are pretty anti carb
FYI the chiros wife has 2 children.. they're around 3 and 5.. she was absolutely morbidly obese after her 2nd child.. I'm talking like twice the size of Rosanne Barr in the 90s.. and apparently due to following Maximized Living Advanced Plan.. she is now thinner than Kate Moss..
I really don't like any of the foods on the list. They say if you love potato, to buy Jicamas and or Khol Rabi and do them in an air fryer the way you would do potato.. Well guess what? I went to 5 grocery stores including Ingles, Kroger, Publix, and none of them had Khol Rabi, and only ONE of them had 2 Jicamas.. 2 only...
I really don't enjoy smoothies without bananas
I don't enjoy life without raw oats
and I like the base of lunch and dinner to be either potato, or brown rice, or wheat grain bread... (all of which are forbidden)
what's more upsetting is when I say this to the chiro his reply is 'if you want those foods, it means you have serious deficits or something is wrong wtih your body'
I'm like 'um no.. they're tasty and eating them is enjoyable.. eating the approved foods is not'
let me see if I can find the approved food list (it's in the link in my first post)
here it is
Vegetables
Arugula, Asparagus, Bamboo Shoots, Bean Sprouts, Bell Peppers (red, yellow, green), Broad beans, Broccoli, Brussel Sprouts, Cabbage, Cassava, Cauliflower, Chives, Celery, Chayote Fruit, Chicory, Coriander, Collard greens, Cucumber, Eggplant, Endive, Fennel, Garlic, Ginger Root, Green Beans, Hearts of Palm, Jicama (raw), Jalapeno Peppers, Kale, Kohlrabi, Lettuce, Mushrooms, Parsley, Mustard Greens, Onions, Radishes, Radicchio, Snap Beans, Snow Peas, Shallots, Spinach, Spaghetti Squash, Summer Squash, Swiss Chard, Tomatoes, Turnip Greens, Watcress, Zucchini
Plant-based Fats & Proteins
Nuts & seeds
Almonds, Cashews, Flaxseeds, Hemp Seeds, Pecans, Pine Nuts, Macadamia, Sesame Seeds, Sunflower, Walnuts
Animal Products (must be organic)
Grass Fed Beef
Fish
Cold water fish: salmon, mahi-mahi, mackerel, halibut
Smaller fish: sardines, anchovies
Eggs
so you can have zhucini pasta, or baked cauli flower.. but there's no dairy so you can't use butter or cheese to flavor if you wanted to (which keto people do)

Yes I have a sister who is 15 years older than me who has been vegan pretty much her entire life
and she had 2 healthy pregnancies..
I prefer vegan protein powders like rice protein or pea proteins..
I do want to see a dietician, but I want one who has good reviews and that's hard to find.
I don't like any diet where people are trying to push meat onto me (Keto.. and this Maximized Living Advanced Plan)
it's odd to me that they demonize high carb health foods like brown rice, quinoa, raw oats

Ask your obstetrician for a referral to a registered dietician who specializes in pregnancy nutrition. A "nutritionist" may or may not have any formal training in human nutrition.9 -

I don't think anyone is doubting that vegans can have healthy pregnancies. They certainly can. But trying to lose weight, especially aggressively, while pregnant is very dangerous. You can maintain or gain and still be vegan.
Veganism is not some special cure all. You can be a healthy vegan or an unhealthy vegan. It all depends on what you eat. Just like you can be a healthy meat eater. I generally don't like dividing foods up into "healthy" or "unhealthy" but meat and fish can absolutely be what is traditionally considered as healthy food. Besides the high protein amount, different meats and seafoods have a whole host of beneficial nutrients.13 -

I'm not clear on what you are wanting from people here. If you don't like the diet the chiro has you on (I have never had a chiro talk diet to me and would stop seeing any one who tried), then stop following it. Follow the diet you will eat, aim for nutritional balance (have you looked at what levels of nutrients are appropriate during pregnancy?). Stop worrying about weight loss while you are trying to grow a healthy human. Insufficient calorie intake while baby is developing is possibly harmful.
No one is saying vegan is unhealthy, it's not inherently healthy or unhealthy, it depends on whether or not nutritional balance is found with whatever diet one chooses (you could theoretically eat all of your calories in Oreos everyday, and while that's still vegan, I'm fairly certain it wouldn't be nutritionally well rounded). I'm not sure where you are finding the RD reviews, but I tend to take those with a grain of salt. It's more common for people who are angry to post a review than for people who are happy to post them.24 -

Don't go back to that chiro. I have nothing against them (I love mine!) and a good one can certainly help with a number of complaints - not all of them, at first glance, obviously linked to something being out of place in your spine - but this is just dumb. Stay far away from him, and maybe look into finding another OB as well if the nurse there is equally dumb.

Your only goal right now should be growing a healthy human being. That’s it.
You want a diet? Buy the book ‘What to eat when you are expecting’. That was pretty good. In general, take your prenatal vitamins. Make sure you get enough folic acid and dha. You need extra protein. And follow your doctor’s (meaning your ob) advice on what to eat and what not to eat.
After you’re done growing another human being inside of your body, and hopefully after you’re done breast feeding if you are planning on doing that, then you can try out whatever fukocta crazy crap you want on your poor body. (Albeit, it will probably also be better for the long term health of your child to witness you eating a healthy diet. Like if you simply follow the government’s food guide recommendations, also a pretty good and sensilble diet. 🤷♀️13 -
I just found this linked in another thread. I haven't read through the whole thing, but it looks like a pretty comprehensive discussion on pregnancy and nutrition:

seafoods have a whole host of beneficial nutrients.[/quote]
It is advisable to abstain from shell fish while pregnant as mercury levels can be high.
Every medical professional I have ever spoken to, warns against dieting for weight loss during pregnancy. As a diabetic I limit carbs to 60 grams per meal. That is considered healthy for me. If you are worried about gestational diabetes you could limit your carbs to a reasonable amount for diabetics. As your pregnancy progresses your metabolism can speed up.
