“But there aren’t any calories in sour cream.”

I’ve heard quite a few jaw-droppers lately, including:
“I put sour cream on pretty much everything because it doesn’t have any calories.”
“It’s been proven that calorie counting doesn’t work.”
“Why are you putting whole milk in your coffee? I thought you were trying to lose weight. Whole milk has fat in it.”
Anybody else hear some great misconceptions lately? Please share!

You'll never lose any weight if you eat donoughts.33

“Evil carbs” — My wine-guzzling uncle says this on the regular.28

I always get comments from family, friends and colleagues whenever they see me eating something 'unhealthy' (like a doughnut or cookie) along the lines of "*exaggerated surprise* you're eating a doughnut!" and "guess you're off your diet". I used to try and explain how calorie counting and macros work but I don't bother anymore.35

No point doing cardio if you aren’t fasted in the am27

I've heard a few crackers recently - mostly from people deep into food-woo. They've all made it onto my list of people to try to avoid chatting with at the leisure centre... because talking with them honestly make me feel drunk. There is no such thing as cholesterol[You should] do a 3-day broccoli cleanse to cure your coldMcDonalds is good for you now - they stopped using fake cows!

"But you don't have to worry about what you eat, because you're so thin."
Yeah, now I'm thin. And I'd like to stay that way, thanks.
Among my immediate friends, the lifetime achievement award for ineffectual myths goes to "at our age, you have to cut out carbs to lose weight".
I'm not dissing people for whom low carb is successful: Yay, you, for finding what works for you! But among my immediate circle, it's the battle cry of friends who've struggled for years, but are still fat.
And yes, the same folks also say "calorie counting doesn't work." (Worked for me, several years back, and just keeps working.)
Off topic honorable mention to my aunt, who used to say "You can't get drunk on wine." Trust me, she could.58 -

People believe I'm "naturally" small because I'm short and I run. No, I used to be 100 pounds heavier, and I've only been at this weight for a year and a half. I worked my kitten off to get here (literally). Running is part of how I got to this weight.
At the other extreme, a relative who told me that my clothing sizes are "too small for anyone" and "no one should wear that size." Again, I'm short and at a healthy weight.31 -
And, more in the spirit of the OP's original post, I recently spoke to someone who told me they could use as much oil as they wanted in their cooking because they're doing low carb to lose weight.35

"I've had two cookies now my diet is ruined"30

My all-time favorite. A colleague of mine and his wife were on a fad diet (keto, Atkins, something?) and was bragging about some weight loss. I said I had lost 30 pounds fairly recently, too. How? I said, by counting calories and exercising.
"That's not how you're supposed to do it."

"My cholesterol is high, so I can't eat cheese or eggs," while a friend demolished about 2# of shrimp.27

I'm still on the whole "butter in coffee is good for you" claim22

"Fresh fruit is just as bad as eating a candy bar because it's nothing but sugar."
Who here has gotten obese because they ate too many apples? Raise your hand.45 -

sugar is bad. you should eat fruit25

"If you don't drink this Plexus pink drink, you aren't healthy!" - As the person posts constant pictures of them drinking and eating out.
"Join my 5 day sugar detox!" I asked if I could still enjoy fruit. "No, it's bad for you, this shocks your system and will help you bust through your plateau!!"
"How come you eat bacon, full fat dairy, and red meat? I though you were on a diet!"16 -

I actually know a person who had trouble losing weight from eating too many apples (among other things I'm sure). "But I have fruit for breakfast everyday!" Turns out they were eating 5 - 6 apples for breakfast. Every single day.33 -
My life would be totally different if sour cream didn't have calories!33

"you should drink apple cider vinegar cause it works for celebrities.'

My sister in law refused a piece of bread with dinner because she wasn't eating carbs....she then proceeded to have three pieces of lasagna.46

Sister in law that believes Keto is magic and causes you to lose weight without realizing its through a calorie deficit.15

You're diabetic now. Never eat carbs again.9

Just eat whole foods and you don't need to worry about calories.20

Pet Peeve
When someone starts to have a few light workout sessions per week and because they are so proud of themselves, they allow for a nice treat after every workout (Mcdonalds Mcflurry, candy bar, doughnuts, etc...) which totally offsets the calories they burned or they end up worse off with additional calories.
I have several coworkers like this and it's honestly really sad to watch. Because I want to maintain a professional work environment, I won't say anything but they genuinely see nothing wrong with it. Then you hear, I don't get it! I'm working out now so I should be losing weight right? Oh wait- muscle weighs more than fat so that's got to be it! *eyeroll*

I'm only get the typical ones around these parts.
"I'm doing low-carb, so I only eat whole wheat bread." She also had a short period of "I'm eating no carbs" and ate roasted potatoes for lunch. I think she believes that only white bread and pasta contain carbs.
"I only lose weight when I cut out carbs." Different lady. She is on a constant cycle of water weight loss and gain. Same five pounds over and over.

"If it jiggles it's water weight."
Or the whole, "My body processes carbs differently, so I can't lose weight while eating them."10 -
“I could eat the same as you and wouldn’t lose weight. There really isn’t such a thing as overweight, it’s where your body naturally wants to be and it’s pointless to fight that so eat another cookie.”
Slightly paraphrased but yep, someone really said that to me.15
