Just like the title says. I'm on Keto and doing so good. I'm now very sick. Hurts to swallow, throat is burning, chest is heavy and fever is coming and going. Anyone have any suggestions for any kind of Keto friendly cough syrup or cough drops? I can't have aspartame as I'm allergic, and most sugar free stuff has that garbage sweetner in it.

If I did keto, I'd probably sip ginger tea or suck on plain fresh ginger root in your position.7

Gargle warm salt water, and/or lemon water. Neither of these are fixes but they should ease symptoms somewhat.2

IMHO, medicine is more important than sticking to your diet in the short term.
Regardless, considering your symptoms I would go to the doctor and take whatever they suggested. Once a fever is involved in throat and chest pain, you need to make sure it's not something serious and/or contagious.48 -

Halls also makes a sugar free black cherry lozenge2

This. You may need antibiotics. Get to the doctor, now.13 -
Anecdotal, but I’ve had Rheumatic Fever four times due to not tending to sore throats and being too pig headed to go to the doctor til too late. The joint pain that resulted was a major contributor to my weight and still troubles me. They didn’t connect the dots til the fourth time, and I just wrapped up a seven year series of painful (and expensive!) penicillin injections. Don’t be me. I had every excuse in the book to not go to the doctor. If you are that sick, GO to the doctor.15

Echoing the others, all of these qualify as a reason to see your doctor to rule out infection or something more serious. Until then, look for pill versions of the medication you need. Most of them come in both forms.6 -
Thanks for the words of advice everyone I will go to the doctor if it gets worse. Long story short, I have no health coverage and can't get any because I am a Canadian living in the States (Its going to be another 4 + months before my Visas go through, my Immigration lawyer says it could be up to another 6 months but I am being optimistic). So for now, I will send the hubby to the store to find those sugar free halls and keep my fingers crossed it doesn't get any worse4

For some reason my comment didn't post but look for Buckley's cough syrup. I believe it is said to be disgusting tasting but shouldn't have any sugar in it.1

Actually, lemon and salt both make it worse. Salt dehydrates and can cause more coughing symptoms in the throat, and lemon is very harsh in general (it's an acid after all), and throwing that on a sore spot is not good. I think lemon used with a cold stems from combining lemon juice with honey and maybe ginger. Honey is a natural antiseptic, lemon is full of vitamin C. Ginger.. no idea. It certainly helps against nausea and is tasty. But lemon itself will likely make things worse.4 -
Look very closely @ the inactive ingredients part; no aspartame in this particular product4 -
Am all for the hot lemon and ginger (am not a fan of honey). Ginger is good as an anti-inflammatory and can help with any nausea. Hydration is really important so please aim to get a lot of water on board. I also find sleeping as upright as you can stops all the ick pooling around your poor sore throat, along with a lot of Vicks Menthol slapped on between your chin and sternum. I hope you are feeling better soon OP.0

This is why I could never do keto. Sugar is not the devil31

Colloidal Silver is amazing at knocking out illness. 3-5 tsp a day until not sick any more.26

Can you go to an Urgent Care Clinic, even if you have to pay out of pocket? I know that this approach may not be what you want, money wise, but it would be cheaper than being taken to the ER with strep cough or pneumonia.
For the fever take acetaminophen every 4 to 6 hours, depending on how high your fever goes. Coricidin is also recommended for coughs and colds, and Delsym is a good med for cough and congestion. You can also go to a pharmacy and ask for suggestions. They don't charge.
Forget about Keto while you are this sick. Your health is more important at the present time.

But this thread has nothing to do with diabetes.
Sugar, peanuts, gluten, shrimp, salt... all can be problematic or even dangerous for some people with certain health conditions, but are fine in moderation for people who don't have those conditions. IMHO there's no reason to add that every single time the item is mentioned.20 -

I second this-my first though when reading the OP was strep. Most Med Centers can check for that (as well as pneumonia), and can give prescriptions/necessary treatment if needed. My family's gone in for both and its cost us under $200 out of pocket with no insurance factored in (we have a high deductible HSA so pay out of pocket for most things).
Op, if you have a local med center/urgent care center definitely look into it.7 -

Collodial silver is a substance that accumulates in your body and does absolutely nothing in terms of improving health or abating sickness. Also there's no chelation therapy as far as I know that can get it out of your system.12
