Here's a guy who's been eating whatever he wants for years. Caloric deficit proven over and over.

Exercise is also not a requirement for weightloss.
Have a question about this. I know it takes a calorie deficit to lose weight. I have lost 31 pounds with a deficit but doesn’t balance or healthy eating come in to play?2 -

Eating a variety of foods is good for overall health. But in terms of strictly weight loss, calorie deficit is all that matters.11 -

It doesn't matter if you eat 2000 calories a day in chicken and broccoli and apples or 2000 calories in twinkies and ding dongs and apple pie, if your tdee is 1500 calories a day, you're gonna gain weight.9 -

Balance and healthy eating "can" have an indirect affect on weight loss through adherence issues - if you eat an unbalanced or not nutritious diet, over time you might feel hungry or fatigued or cranky.
Otherwise balance and healthy eating affect health, not weight loss. Calories determine weight loss/gain.
And while I realize this doesn't apply to yiu, it's directed at others who might be reading - we say you can eat whatever you want FOR WEIGHT LOSS. Obviously you should eat a varied and balanced nutritious diet for good health.
But that's not what OP asked about. And OP you can eat a healthy diet that includes white rice, and you can lose weight eating white rice. Please just make sure you are eating enough overall, and specifically getting enough protein and fat. The little bit of food you described wouldn't do either.12 -

I agree with this. I do think it's important to stay within your comfort zone though. If eating "X" seems to make you uncomfortable physically or emotionally, then by all means replace it with something else.
It's also a refining process. I can eat whatever I want, but choose not to often. I can fit chocolate easily in (M&Ms last night ) but overall I eat a pretty balanced diet, mostly meats/veggies/grains - but will not say no to cake or ice cream if I want it. And if I occasionally go over, ok, there's tomorrow. Just as long as I don't make a habit of it.8 -
Of course! Although having it at lunch AND dinner would bore me to tears! I love sweet potatoes. When I eat rice, I measure out either a whole or half cup using measuring cups.0

Hmm. My 40 pounds of weight loss would disagree. I probably eat white rice at least twice per week.
My 30 pound weight loss says the same. I eat it at least that often. Had it today. I also eat potatoes. They're cool too. And every once and a while, I have *gasp* pizza. Never had a protein waffle tho. But you know what? If a person likes to eat them, I'm sure they're cool too.
They don't look that good from his photos, but people have different tastes.
I don't actually like waffles that much, protein waffles or normal ones. I also limit protein powder.
I do like roasted potatoes and an occasional stir fry with rice! (Normally I prefer pasta or potatoes over rice, however, although I'd never claim that was anything beyond personal preference.)
I'll note that if eating pizza or rice or potatoes or pasta I normally have lots of veg. Not sure how to work that in with waffles and don't recall the protein waffle meal involving veg, but I'm sure some could work them in.3 -

What a puzzling comparison. It’s almost as if you think there’s only one possible type of pizza and it makes everyone who eats it feel the same way. The pizza I ate the other night, after a big salad, had grilled chicken, pesto, spinach, artichokes and red peppers on a wood fired crust. It didn’t make me feel like crap, especially with the two glasses of Pinot Grigio I enjoyed as well. Eating protein waffles instead would have been kind of hard since I was at a little local pizza place and I don’t think they serve those there. I also think eating that for dinner would have left me lacking in fat and overall diversity of nutrients.
Do you often think to yourself, hmm pizza or waffles? What kind of pizza do you typically eat? What do you put on your waffles?19 -

I think this is what happens when you have programmed yourself to believe myths to the point you actually feel differently when you eat some of the "bad" food. I wouldn't want to live that way and I am sorry that you do currently.
There is nothing in pizza that would make a person feel bad unless they had an existing medical condition like an insulin disorder or a food allergy. If you ate nothing but pizza you might have a point but not as an item that rotates through a menu. I have eaten it probably 3 times a month (1200ish calories at a time) for more than a year. It is a nice break from my normal routine which makes me feel good mentally. I have no physical reaction to it.
I don't believe it is healthy to live in extremes.16 -
Wow! I cook myself a frozen pizza for dinner at least 2 or 3 nights a week. I must be doing it wrong because I feel great and am still losing weight.14

This is a great comparison; few grams of fiber difference. For many people (myself included) white rice is considerably easier to digest vs. brown rice. The glycemic index is irrelevant if food is combined (carbs with protein or fat sources). Not going to wake up one day with diabetes eating white rice in a caloric deficit13 -
Hmm....some of you are thinking too hard about this. Just eat what you want and what makes you feel energized and full. If you feel great eating pizza and waffles all day long....go for it. If you lose weight and look good, then whats the harm. lol5

Oh gosh and while you were having that amazing pizza I was having a thin-crust wood-fired pizza with arugula, thinly sliced fennel, and shitake mushrooms. OMG, I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
I'm absolutely sure it was within my calorie limit, within my macros, and packed with tons of micronutrients I need and love. I just cannot imagine life without pizza.

Why would I eat 1000 calories of pizza in the first place? 2 veggie slices come it at about half that. And then I could have protein waffles for dessert if I wanted them. Though I'd probably opt for a side salad and have some roasted chickpeas or dry cereal later in the day as a snack?10 -

I loved eating white rice when I lost 85 pounds, and ever since then while maintaining for the last 8 years. Yum!! It is only 100 calories per 1/2 cup and we all have way more calories left in our daily budgets!! One of my favorite foods ever.7 -

But you'd be doing your body a huge diservice nutrition-wise. A calorie may be a calorie, but there are certainly high-quality and low-quality calories. How your body processes those calories will also be differnt because of chemistry and the reactions they have within the body.
Here's the simple breakdown on white vs. brown rice from a simple Google search: Brown rice is a whole grain. ... White rice, on the other hand, has had the bran and germ removed, which are the most nutritious parts of the grain. This leaves white rice with very few essential nutrients, which is why brown rice is usually considered much healthier than white.
Yes, you can choose to consume white rice, but you should look to get the nutrition by other means if you do.

I feel pretty damn good after eating pizza.9 -
I eat white rice, potatoes, pizza (yes delivery), cake, cookies, whatever I want and I've lost almost 70lbs now and still going. I just budget for the things I want. That said I do encourage adding in fruits and veggies. I find a healthier diet is easier when you focus on adding "good" things instead of banning the "bad" stuff.7

What's wrong with pizza? A nice crust, lots of veggies on top, fresh tomatoes and proper buffalo mozarella (or American cheese if you really prefer it). Nothing wrong. Nothing wrong with rice either.3

Can you explain exactly why you think it should be the other way around?11 -

I mean when I eat pizza I usually eat 2000 calories plus. It's one of the few foods I can't control myself on. By that is my issue, not pizzas, and I don't blame it for my baggage. But even with my love of overeating pizza, I can still fit it in on occasion. I diet to live, not live to diet, and having things I enjoy keeps me sane and on track, even if I am a few calories over on that specific day.4 -

1000 calories of pizza does sound infinitely more enjoyable than 1000 calories of protein waffles.8 -

Well, quite!
Though most of the time I have pizza, it's actually closer to 400 calories; I make my own, with a spicy vegetable topping, light on the cheese.
I really want to know what makes homemade sourdough bread with red pepper, onion, mushrooms and cheese somehow less healthy than a pile of protein waffles.3 -
Only skimmed through the comments, so apologize if these thoughts are repeats (there just seemed to be a lot of stuff about pizza and waffles in there ).
One caution about the rice- any rice- is that it does tend to be rather calorie intensive, so a person trying to lose weight and perhaps with a smaller calorie deficit would want to make sure they are measuring it accurately (dry, by weight), especially if it is something they have frequently.
My other thought is about those who have commented favoring potatoes over rice. Is it really an either/or situation? I typically have rice with stir fries and as a component of certain soups and casseroles. I love potatoes, but would not want them with my veggie stir fry or in my wild rice soup.3 -
someone sure went woo happy4

Simply put, yes - you can eat white rice and still lose weight2

Fair enough. I'm a short woman who'll be maintaining on around 1550-1600 calories before exercise when I hit goal. Two slices are usually enough for me.2 -
