@PastorVincent Sounds like you got Mrs. PastorVincent exactly what she wanted. Great job! Who says you have to go to Gerard's or Kay Jewler's? BTW, that is a great marathon moment.
@rheddmobile Hope the Achilles heals quickly. Glad you can run a little now, anyway.3 -
rheddmobile wrote: »Achilles’ tendon still sucks. Walked 6.5 miles and ran several intervals totalling maybe a mile... and my ankle is letting me know that little bit of running was too much.
I saw my regular doctor for a1c and thyroid check yesterday and took the opportunity to consult her about my ankle, and she was of the opinion that an ortho probably wouldn’t be able to offer much that I’m not already doing. It’s obvious there’s no major tear and as far as microtears I would just be told to ease off for a while. She did warn me that Achilles’ tendons take forever to rehab, which I was already noticing. Her prescription was to run as long as it seems to be getting better, and stop if it seems to be getting worse.
I really want to run again. Soon. Even the tiny bit of running I did today made my glucose control so much better for my evening meal.
We crossed the bridge where we saw three snakes last week, only saw two snakes. Then we saw a Cooper’s hawk, and a pair of great blue herons. Just beautiful.
Have you tried taping the Achilles? When I had issues with mine, KT Tape got me through it and I eventually could run pain free.1 -

Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Partly cloudy and cool with a light breeze from the northeast today. Back was a little tight for about the first 3k, but loosened up after that and only provided the occasional niggle. Guess I'm OK to run.
@PastorVincent: What a great tribute to both those two determined runners and the race organizers who appear to understand the things that go on inside a runner's head.

@mbaker566 - Sorry to hear about your breakup. It's never easy, but a nice run with pups certainly helps a little, I hope.
@polskagirl01 - Your post is really making me yearn to get back out there on the trails this summer. Can't wait!
@amymoreorless Bada$$ indeed! two marathons in two days, not to mention travel, and sight seeing, and meetings...I am exhausted just reading about it! Fantastic accomplishment.
@PastorVincent - I am not a momma, but if I was, I would want that to be my mother's day present. Oh yeah, and thanks for making me cry so early in the morning with that Pittsburgh marathon story.6 -
i got a floaty picture!
but i don't wanna pay 20 dollars for a download14 -
@martaindale - how old is your daughter? Mine started swimming (club) when she was 5 and swam all thru HS and into college. It was great for her but I don't miss those weekend all day swim meets where we waited all day for her to swim a few times.
@PastorVincent - love that story about the Pittsburgh Marathon! So awesome that those ladies were allowed to finish and kept at it to do so! I too think you got Mrs. Pastor Vincent the perfect gift!! Good job!
@mbaker566 and @polskagirl01 - love the places you get to run! So beautiful!
@rheddmobile - any chance the 6.5 mile walk aggravated your Achilles? I know when mine was bothering me walking was as much if not more of an issue than running.
@mbaker566 - that is a great picture! I hate that they charge SO much for pictures. I have actually been to a couple of races where they gave the downloads for free.0 -
Interesting article on what to wear for spring running and/or when it is still cool outside but not cold.

May goal: 75 miles
5/1: 5.04 miles
5/2: 2.19 miles
5/7: 4.60 miles
5/8: 4.70 miles
16.53/75 miles completed
I had a nice 4.7 mile run this morning. After looking at the radar last night before bed I had pretty much decided I would either run at lunch or skip today's run. It looked like a big storm would be coming in sometime around 4:00 am and it would be stormy until at least 7:00. I can handle some rain, but not thunderstorms. I woke up around 2:45 and the heavy storms were coming through earlier than expected. I had also forgotten to turn off my alarm so when I woke up a t 5:15 I checked the weather and it looked like I had until at least 7:00 to get a run in. Plus I decided that I should really get up and let the dogs out for a bit since they would be cooped up inside all morning. It was about 62F which was pretty nice, but the humidity was 100% so it did start to feel pretty muggy as I warmed up. But it was still pretty nice. I could see lightening off to the west, but it wasn't too close and it wasn't windy. The tendon on my ankle felt a little stiff starting out, but it loosened up as I went and felt ok during the run. I tried to take it pretty easy but I did speed up some towards the end. I could tell that the storms were moving my direction and I started to get some light rain. I didn't want to be too far from home if it did start storming, but I made it home in plenty of time. I tried to let the dogs back out again when I got home. The corgi went out for a minute, but the two old dogs weren't having it so I left them alone. The wind was picking up and the thunder sounded closer and they really hate that. So I did yoga to the sound of an early morning thunderstorm with three sleepy dogs semi watching me. It was actually pretty nice.

5/18/19: Run for 57th AHC Half Marathon11 -
@PastorVincent Thanks for sharing that story! That is just so awesome!
Awesome picture @mbaker566!
I wonder if KT tape would be helpful for my ankle tendon issue. Mine is the tendon along the front, not the Achilles. I may have to look into it.

So looking like my planned PR attempt at Glacier will be a DNS. My wife's leg has not recovered from the marathon run so we took her to the doctor and the doctor was like "I know it is pointless to tell a runner not to run... but do not run till you can get an orthopedic doctor to check that out."
So we called the othro and they were like "Sure, we can see you on May 28th and you will need xrays."
So we called her doc back and was like "So now what?" We have the appointment for the 28th, but going to try and find out if there is another doc she can see sooner. Being Wednesday, getting in before the Saturday race is probably not realistic.
*sigh*13 -

You (more than many) are acutely aware that things happen for a reason in accordance with a master plan we can neither see nor fully understand.8 -

heh, I look like I am flying!
That was form the day before the Marathon. Pace as like 13somthing. Not exactly flying9 -
@PastorVincent hey, there's nothing wrong with flying slowly! Sorry to hear about Mrs Vincent's leg, hope it can be sorted quickly and easily.
Also, husbanding at PRO level! I wanted a Garmin. Would have settled for shoes like those happily. I got a mug. I must work on my 'grateful and not secretly disappointed after prodding the box for days' face

As one temporarily disabled running wife/partner to another, I would suggest to your wife to pat you on the back and send you off, even if she has to miss the race. It hurts a little but not as much as knowing you messed up someone else’s race! Wishing her the best with her leg.
Photos are great!8 -

Thank you, I have been taping it, and it does seem to help some, but not enough.3 -
@PastorVincent - I am sorry about Mrs Pastor Vincent's leg too but I do agree with @rheddmobile that you should be going to the race even if she can't go or run (was she planning on running too?)
I went out for a final short run and since it is cool and cloudy, similar to the expected race start, I went out in a tank top and similar capris to what I will race for the race, to see how it would feel (cold). I was pretty cold the first 0.5 mile or so and then warmed nicely. The humidity is really high so I also got really sweaty. Since it also may rain on Saturday I think I may layer a long sleeve over my tank that I could keep on, tie around my waist or just toss. I have sleeves but if I want to take them off I would have no place to put them other than to stuff them into my waist band. I was equally undecided about which shoes to wear and made the decision today not to run in my Altras. My foot/toes went to sleep again even on just this short run so I am going to go with the Topo's.
I haven't been this indecisive about race day in a very long time...

I love this picture. You look like a proud hubby! Sorry to hear about Mrs. Pastorvincent's leg. I hope it doesn't keep her sidelined. But I'm sure she will still be supporting you even if that is the case.0 -
@shanaber My husband just scrunches his sleeves down around his wrists instead of taking them off completely, and it’s fine unless it’s very hot.1
-
To all that asked: Yes Mrs. PastorVincent (aka Kristi) was going to run also. That is part of why she got TRAIL SHOES for Mother's day a bit early, so shoes could wear them at the race.7

This is a complete guess and probably way off... but looking at that picture, I wonder if Mrs.PastorVincent does the same thing I've caught myself doing. There's something about my posture, like a certain way I'll kind of lean on one side of my hips, and I know it's bad but I especially catch it when I'm standing (like in the kitchen). Anyway I had race pictures where the photographer took multiple shots and I realized I looked great when landing on one foot, but awful and awkward when landing on the other foot. I eventually realized I wasn't keeping my hips straight when running and began to wonder if one side being slightly lower all the time was aggravating my quad injury. On one particular long run, I consciously kept my hips straight and even felt like I was turning one leg out (but looking down it was actually straight instead of my default gait). What a difference it made! My quad hasn't threatened me since making that adjustment, and now I can consciously switch between the bad running posture, and better posture. Still working on it.
Does anyone else do this? Apparently it's common among women, and I've known for years I did it while standing, but only recently caught it in my running.
@shanaber If it doesn't warm up I'm planning to wear sleeves on Sunday, and will put the strap of my water belt through them if I need to take them off, to make sure I don't lose them. But you could stuff them down the side of your running tights too, or tie them around a tank-top shoulder...
I really need to get some sleep.4 -

8.65 miles tonight, and the rain subsided... it was a good run. Unfortunately, it looks like the marathon on Sat. may have rain.

Such a big smile!
I do the same thing and for me the “tell” is looking at my shoulders, the same shoulder is always dropped regardless of which foot is leading. I believe I started doing it to favor my bad knee, and it has led to all kinds of trouble with the opposite hamstring. Single foot balance and straightness exercises helped a lot.
I tried to find a place at the same point in the stride on opposite feet and flip it, then compare. Part of this is the angle the photographer is shooting from but it does look like there’s a torso twist going on. In one photo she is leaning onto her leading foot, the other she is leaning away from it.0 -
@Tramboman Glad your back is doing better.
@mbaker566 That's a great photo. It is too bad they charge so much. You would think they would actually make more money if they charged less because more people would buy them.
@kgirlhart Sounds like a nice morning - if I were a morning person.
@eleanorhawkins Good luck with your "grateful" face. Maybe drop better hints next year. LOL
@PastorVincent I hope there isn't anything seriously wrong with Kristi's leg and it heals quickly. Also hope maybe you can get an earlier appointment. There is a walk-in orthopedic clinic in a town near here that I went to when I tore my calf muscle. Have you checked to see if there is anything like that in your area? (BTW, I love the big smile she has in all of the pictures. I'd probably be dying, not smiling. LOL)1 -

We called her doctor back and left a message asking if there was another option. Waiting to hear now. I am sure there is, we are in a largish city.

@martaindale - how old is your daughter? Mine started swimming (club) when she was 5 and swam all thru HS and into college. It was great for her but I don't miss those weekend all day swim meets where we waited all day for her to swim a few times.
She's 10. We did club swim for a couple of years but she really didn't like it. It's a little intense in our area. She found rock climbing so now she does swimming once a week and only competes with our neighborhood summer league. It's a great sport, but ultimately not the best fit for her as a competitive thing. It's awesome your daughter stuck with it that long!
And, swim meets totally suck. I can deal for a couple of months, but I don't miss the year round swim meets!!2
